26 We’ve al l gossiped about our teachers – what they are like, what they like to do outside school, how they give us such tough assignments. Have you wondered if teachers (or lecturers as we call them) at the poly are different? We let you be the judge. How did you end up in your alma mater as a lecturer? After getting my diploma in Interior Architecture & Design from TP, I went on to obtain a degree in Museum and Exhibition Design in UK. I worked in the industry and spent quite a number of years as an exhibition designer with the Singapore Science Centre. Then I came back to TP. J What were some interesting projects that you’ve been involved in? I was presented the most glorious opportunity to work with LucasFilm for the design and set-up of the Star Wars Exhibition. I travelled to Aichi, Japan to supervise the de-installation of the exhibition. I’ve also worked with New Line Cinema and Te Pa Pa Museum for the set-up of the Lord of the Rings Exhibition. What do you like best about teaching? All of it. From the planning and delivery of lessons, to handling, interacting with and engaging the students, to even the quiet moments when H a rit h everyone has gone for semester break. Fad hir l ah Is it strange working with your former lecturers? Yes, it’s still quite mind-boggling. L e ct ur e r, Ten years ago, I was in front of them, presenting E n vi r o nm e n t my work, getting reminders, warnings and Design sometimes, a telling-off. Now, I’m sitting with them, lunching with them and cracking jokes. TP g ra d u ate. It’s just weird. Sel f- pr o f es s ed St ar Wars geek f an . Any funny stories? Once, I was mistaken for a student pretending to be lecturer Skat eb o ard er. En j o y s and was reprimanded by a lecturer for attempting to do so… gaming . C anno t l i ve w it hout d o u gh nu ts.
27 Before TP, what did you do? I used to be an art teacher in secondary school, after which I pursued my N a t a s ha L o w dream to be a web designer. Years passed and I thought Lec turer, I wanted to do the two things I enjoy most – design and teach. That led me to lecturing at TP. Inte rac tive M edia Info rm atic s and What were some interesting projects you worked Inte rnet & on prior to joining TP? It was a project I did for M ultim edia Swensen’s. One of the perks was to have meetings at the De ve lopm ent restaurant and I got the opportunity to do food tasting for their menu revamp (it would supposedly give me more inspiration when I designed their website). What do you like best about teaching? Interacting with the younger generation and learning their lingo. My students “forced” me to join Facebook to stay T e ac h e s w e b design, connected with them before there’s a generation gap H um an C o m put er between us. L In t e r ac t io n , and audio/ v ide o e dit ing. J unk food What do you enjoy outside of teaching? In no que e n . What did you do prior to lecturing at TP? I started my career in the creative advertising industry working on the advertising campaigns of brands such as Pizza Hut, M&M’s Chocolates, Motorola and L’Oreal. It was a fun and exciting industry. We had to develop print advertisements, produce TV commercials, recommend and buy media space as well as run events for them. We worked very hard, putting in long hours. I learned a lot during those times. Prior to joining TP, I spent four years in the Sales and Marketing department of Singapore Press Holdings. This was a great opportunity for me to learn marketing from the perspective of a media owner. What’s the best part about your job? I would say it’s the opportunity to work with the youth. Interacting with them brings a lot of joy as well as tears. Besides sharing my knowledge with the students, I learn a lot from them too. It was actually one of my students who told me about Facebook and got me started on it. What do you like best about TP? I like the vibrancy of the campus. I also love the caring culture here. My colleagues are great. They are supportive and are always ready to lend a helping hand. I am happiest when I receive calls from ex-students telling me how well they’ve done. Or ex- students inviting me to their weddings and baby month-old celebrations.

30 A-walking we go! Bistro Walk café opens from 10:30am – 4:30pm during the school term. It is managed by students and supervised by staff and teaching instructors from the School of Applied Science. Daily menus here include a main course with soups, ice creams or beverages. All the food is served up in a jiffy, they’re sizzling hot and smelling shiok all the time. Some favourites include the breaded fish fillet (fried to perfection, served on a bed of lettuce with a dollop of melt-in-your-mouth mashed potatoes on the side), the teriyaki chicken with jasmine rice and a side of salad, and the chicken bolognaise (al dente spaghetti served with a delicious sauce). Top off your meal with the Belgian waffle, served with ice- cream made by TP’s own training ice-cream factory, Koolwerkz. Piping hot and drizzled with chocolate sauce and a wee bit of syrup, it’s a really satisfying finish to an already good value-for-money meal! It’s October and the second semester has just started for TP students. The campus is packed with activities in every corner! A big question on everyone’s mind is: What do we eat today? 35 Yes, it’s that time of the year again… school holidays… Christmas… New Year… and Joint Admission Exercise (JAE). There’s probably a lot going on Whatever course you pick, you must meet the Minimum Entry in your mind and we’d like to Requirements (MERs). You can find out what these are from our website make it a little easier for you. www.tp.edu.sg, and all our course write-ups (e.g prospectus, brochures). As you think about which poly Cut-off points (COP) are only a guide. They are the nett aggregate score and which course to apply for, (after deducting CCA bonus points) of the last student posted to the course. So the COP for a course offered in the 2011 JAE may not be the same as the keep these five simple pointers year before. But it is still a good indicator of how popular a course was in the in mind. (P.S. - We’ve been told previous JAE. You can find the full list of 2010 COPs for TP courses at www. it is pretty good advice.) tp.edu.sg/home/admissions. Follow your heart, but also be practical. You have 12 options on the JAE application form. Your first few choices should reflect the fields you are passionate about. Because competition can be very stiff for some of these courses, the rest of your choices should include courses that you can qualify for, taking into account the previous year’s COP for these courses. Use up your choices – you have 12 of them. We can’t emphasise this enough. Even if you are very confident of getting into the course of your choice. You never know – competition for places can be unpredictable. Get the right information, from the right source. Come to TP during JAE to speak with our course advisors, before deciding which course to choose. You can also chat with our alumni online about TP’s courses and life at TP from 6 – 14 January 2011 (10am to 1am) by logging on to our website at www.tp.edu.sg. 36 It all started in 2009 when a group of our Leisure & Resort Management students submitted a proposal for a Halloween event to the Sentosa Leisure Group. That turned into the very well-received Spooktacular held at Images of Sentosa (a museum on the island). This year, Images of Sentosa was once again transformed into a haunted mansion for the spooky event, which ran over two weekends in October. Over 100 TP students were involved in the event, from logistics to management, with alumni coming back to participate.
