Why study Dante in Florence? As you read Dante’s poem, we’ll visit the sites he describes. We’ll study the art that influenced him, the classical figures in his poem, and the architecture in Florence and nearby cities, such as Siena and Monteriggioni, that shaped Inferno. Inferno is also a political poem in which he denounces Florence’s enemies, such as Pisa and the Florentine government that exiled him. Photo by Kate Feakes
