GLORY DAYS THE CATHOLIC LEAGUE OF NEW ORLEANS P A R T III In a city where prep sports captures the headlines and the attention of fans, no league has had more of an impact over the years than the Catholic League of New Orleans. Started in the early 1900s by Jesuit, St. Aloysius and Holy Cross, the Catholic League was formally created after the addition of Redemptorist and De La Salle in 1956. In later years, Archbishops Rummel, Shaw and St. Augustine began their sports programs and were added to the league. Filled with talented athletes, coaching staffs and colorful characters, the Catholic League stands today as one of the oldest continuing prep leagues in the country with long running rivalries dating back over ninety years. Although teams have come and gone over the decades, the Catholic League with its storied past and lore remains in tact today and is a powerful reminder of the glory days and the tradition of prep sports in New Orleans. Glory Days – Part III begins in 1978 with Jesuit vs. St. Augustine, the first state championship game to be played in the Superdome. This game was the launching pad for the yearly state football finals to be contested each year at this iconic venue. The film will also cover the dominance of the St. Augustine Purple Knights at the end of the 1970s, Brother Martin and Holy Cross and the rise of the Shaw Eagles in the 1980s, the run of the Rummel Raiders in the 1990s & 2000s and the return of the state championship trophy to Carrolton and Banks with the Jesuit Blue Jays reclaiming the crown in 2014, more than 50 years since their last state title. In an effort to properly celebrate and document this unique part of New Orleans history, WLAE-TV is producing the final installment of the trilogy documentary series, Glory Days: The Catholic League of New Orleans – Part III. Following on the heels of the popular and acclaimed Glory Days Parts I & II, the story will once again be told through narration, interviews, photographs and archival films. Funding opportunities at various levels will give those wishing to partner on this program a chance to help bring back the memories of the glory days of prep football in New Orleans. This rare partnership offer is available for consideration for a limited time. Glory Days: The Catholic League of New Orleans – Part III will premiere in January, 2020 on WLAE- TV and PBS stations throughout Louisiana. WLAE plans to pledge this project by offering a DVD of the program and other related items as incentives to viewers who make a membership donation to the station. Serving as executive producers of the project are veteran television producers Ron Yager and Jim Dotson, along with producer Tom Gregory and executive story consultant, Ron Brocato, author of The Golden Age: When Prep Football was King and sports editor of the Clarion Herald.
