Introduction to Hybrid Lilies C3
The genus Lilium belongs to the family Liliacea, which is comprised of many different plants, such as Tulipa,
Hyacinthus and Hemerocallis for instance.
Most produce very showy flowers. All Liliaceae flower parts (see diagram below) are typically in sixes, both
petals and sepals. Some of the species, such as Allium (onions) and Asparagus, are used for food.
The genus Lilium is a large group of bulbous plants originating in various areas world-wide.
General Growing Instructions for Cut Lily Production
Commercial bulb growing is being done in various countries in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
This is an advantage for the floral industry as the two opposites complement each other for year-round production.
Lilies are used commercially for Cut Flower productions (see this catalog) and
for Potted plant production (See Catalog for Pot Lilies 2022).
Besides these applications, all Lily species can be grown in gardens to beautify the landscape (See other Lily Catalogs).
Some Helpful Hints for Growing Lilies for Cut Flowers
Where to plant:
Planted in Ground Beds
• In ground beds in the greenhouse.
Planted in Crates on
top of ground beds
• In ground beds outside.
• In plastic crates, inside or outside. They can be started
inside and moved outside.
By each group of lilies, we listed how many bulbs are suggested
to plant per square yard or per crate for various sizes.
Most Lilies can be shipped weekly; see column
"Suggested Plant Weeks".
Some varieties do not perform well in the darker winter
months even with additional lighting.

A.O.A. Hybrid Lilies
They are unique in the fact that the flowers are intense in color and much larger than regular Asiatic lilies,
yet have the colorful variations which the Orientals lack. They are lightly scented.
All varieties listed in this section grow best in a normal-to-warmer environment. The number of weeks is based on a
forcing temperature of 60 - 68°F. (15 - 20°C.). When grown during warmer months, forcing time will be reduced by 2 weeks.

Why Southern Hemisphere ( SH )Lilies ?
Southern Hemisphere Orientals
Freshly harvested SH Lilies are ideal for winter forcing from the end of October
to early April. These Lilies which are dug in late May to July are vigorous and
New ready to plant during the challenging growing time of the darker winter months.
Zealand Since SH Lilies are freshly dug, they perform much better than Dutch Orientals
which have been in cold storage for almost a year. SH Lilies will produce
optimum number of quality flowers during these months.
When switching back to planting Dutch Orientals, note that the planting
dates should overlap about 2 weeks o keep up continual flower production.

Where are Southern Hemisphere Lily bulbs cultivated?
Southern Hemisphere Lilies are grown primarily in New Zealand since their
growing conditions are very similar to The Netherlands and production is done
under auspices of the Dutch growers with their latest "know-how". The lilies
are handled and packed the same as Dutch bulbs to promote uniformity.
This symbol indicates that these
are fast-growing Orientals.
Can Assimilation Lighting help?
Using freshly harvested lilies from the Southern
Hemisphere can possibly eliminate the need for
assimilation (or supplementing) lighting, This depends
on the light hours per day, except during the shortest
days when additional lighting may be necessary even
for SH Lilies. Generally, the quality of light in the winter
months is insufficient to grow an optimum crop of
Lilies. Note: Bulbs planted in the month of November
will need the most amount of additional lighting when
they emerge.
Why do SH Lilies cost more than the Dutch Ones?
Part of the cost of imported flower bulbs is freight (which is increasing by the
day). The distance between New Zealand and the east coast of the United
States is nearly triple that from The Netherlands.C 23

Conca d'Or Big colored buds.C 26 O.T. Hybrids are the result of cross breeding Oriental (O) liles and Trumpet (T) lilies, a combination
of the larger open-faced flowers and the large trumpet shape flowers. They are sometimes called Orien-Pet lilies.
This group has a wide range of colors. Many are fragrant. Many stink. They tolerate warmer temperatures as
they are generally tough, vigorous lilies. Flower petals are stronger than L.A. Hybrid lilies.
Although O.T. Hybrids have Oriental blood they generally force faster than Orientals, but take longer than L.A. Hybrids.
They root easier than the Orientals and can be grown easily in same environment with L.A. Hybrids and Orientals.
