the natural gas network Bord Gáis Networks constructs and extends the natural gas network in the Republic of Ireland to the highest safety standards. There are over 640,000 customers in 152 different population centres across 19 counties now connected to the network. Bord Gáis Networks, in conjunction with the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), is always looking for new opportunities to extend the existing network to increase natural gas availability throughout the country. Bord Gáis Networks can only service a new area if certain criteria are met to ensure that the extension project is economically viable, including: an assessment of the future economic profile of the area; an analysis of capital expenditure costs; and potential revenue projections. Kinsale has met the necessary criteria and, following regulatory approval from the CER, Bord Gáis Networks Kells is now committed to bringing natural gas to Kinsale. project overview – bringing natural gas to kinsale Kinsale will be supplied with natural gas from the Brinny AGI (Above Ground Installation). The Kinsale project will involve laying a 16.7km feeder main along the R605, via Innishannon, to the edge of Kinsale town and laying 8km of distribution mains throughout the town. Construction will be carried out by our designated contractor (GMC Group) on behalf of Bord Gáis Networks. Construction work will begin in September 2010 and project completion is expected in April 2011. Prior to the commencement of construction works, and throughout the duration of the project, Bord Gáis Networks will liaise with all relevant authorities and organisations, such as the Roads and Planning Departments in Kinsale Town Council, Cork County Council, local businesses and residents adjacent to the pipeline route and all other stakeholders. The construction work will involve trench excavation and the laying of natural gas pipelines on streets and roads. All excavations will be backfilled and all surfaces will be restored. Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum during construction. To ensure this, pipes and fittings will be stored in agreed sites, and local traffic management plans will be put in place on the affected routes. For further information on any aspect of the project, please call 1850 200 694.
