JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 Cumberland Connection 824 Cumberland Drive. Main Line: 408-522-8255 Dear Cumberland Families, Last week was historic. For the first time in the history of the United States, a woman is serving as vice president. We are seeing the most diverse Congress in history, with more indigenous representation than ever before, and the new senior communications team for the White House is all women. This reality brings me hope From the desk of Ms. Carlson…. that we continue to move closer to a day when this diversity of representation is no longer novel, but the norm. For the past several years, Sunnyvale School District has made it a priority to support staff in growing our knowledge of equity and expanding how we promote equity in all that we do. At the heart of all equitable practices is the ability to listen. I have written about this before – the importance of being able to listen and learn so that we might better understand and more equitably serve one another. As educators, we are driven to listen to our students in order to know them and thus more effectively engage them so that we can design learning experiences that support ALL students in accessing, understanding and performing! In addition to listening to one another, we learn about the lives of others who are alike and different from us – not only the lives of famous folks, but the lives of everyday folks – through reading and viewing a diverse range of stories with a diverse cast of characters in the texts being read in classrooms all throughout the year. “Finding ways to incorporate information related to the history and culture of students is important in helping students understand what it means to be who they are.” — Dr. Pedro Noguera (curator of “Best Books For Boys”) Our students’ and staff’s access to quality literature and information that is diverse, equitable and inclusive is an important part of Cumberland’s equity work. Traci Willard, our new Learning Resource Specialist, will play an integral role in supporting this work. I am so thrilled to welcome Traci to our Cumberland community for this and so many reasons. Make sure to find her bio published in this newsletter to learn more about her. And, to support your family in diversifying your home library collection and/or in discovering new titles to borrow from your favorite public library, consider checking out this resource: “We Read Too” – a mobile directory of hundreds of picture, chapter, middle grade and young adult books written by authors of color featuring main characters of color. Finally, I’d like to acknowledge that February is Black History Month. The Black History Month 2021 theme, “Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity” explores the African diaspora, and the spread of Black families across the United States. While highlighting this fact, I want to also acknowledge that any one group or one culture’s history cannot and should not be relegated to being attended to one month a year. At Cumberland, we will strive to recognize Black history — and its people — all year round. Black history is history. Sincerely, Ms. Carlson
