Istanbul, Turkey Slender minarets and lavish Ottoman palaces form the skyline of Istanbul, an unforgettable sight as you approach the city on the busy Bosphorus Strait. Tour Topkapi Palace, marvel at the Blue Mosque, admire ornate Hagia Sofia – and then haggle for spices in the bazaar. Çanakkale, Turkey Gateway to the battlefields of Gallipoli and the remnants of ancient Troy, Çanakkale’s attractions span thousands of years of history. Visit the archaeological site of Troy, dating back more than 5,000 years, and the hilltop village of Assos, dating back to 530 BC and crowned by a Doric temple to Athena, the sparkling bay of Edremit far below. Ashdod, Israel Ashdod is the jumping off point for some of Israel’s most iconic sites. Visit the Old City of Jerusalem, a deeply spiritual experience, and continue to Bethlehem, birthplace of Christ. Or head for vibrant Tel Aviv, with miles of shimmering beaches, edgy design and cool neighbourhoods and in contrast, the winding alleys and Arab markets of Old Jaffa. Kuşadasi, Turkey This beach resort town is famous for its beautiful marina and its colourful bazaar but principally because of its proximity to the Hellenistic ruins of Ephesus, the ancient city famed for the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Limassol, Cyprus The busy beachfront town of Limassol is the gateway to the once-thriving city-state of Curium, dating to the 2nd century BC, an exquisite Greco-Roman amphitheatre at its heart. Alternatively, the UNESCO- protected archeological site of Paphos, famous for its Roman mosaics, is an easy day trip, as are the forested Troodos mountains. Port Said & Alexandria, Egypt The Great Pyramid of Giza, some 4,000 years old, the majestic Sphinx and the vast metropolis of Cairo are all highlights of your day-long adventure between these two Egyptian ports. The tour also includes Cairo’s Egyptian Museum, housing priceless jewels and artefacts buried with Tutankhamun and other pharaohs, thousands of years ago. Volos, Greece Situated between Athens and Thessaloníki, the elegant port of Volos guards the craggy hinterland of Meteora, where early Christians built monasteries atop sheer pinnacles of sandstone. Visit the UNESCO-listed monasteries and learn about the near-impossible take of constructing these isolated retreats – or spend time in Volos itself, a thriving and cultured city with a beautiful waterfront. 7 7
Milos, Greece Volcanic Milos shows off classic Cycladic beauty: the pretty whitewashed capital, Plaka, spilling over a hilltop, the coastline fringed with wind- and sea-sculpted rock formations, soft sandy beaches and aquamarine coves. Bask on the flat rocks of stunning Sarakiniko Beach or explore 2,000-year-old catacombs. Santorini, Greece Sprinkled like sugar over sheer, black volcanic cliffs, Santorini’s whitewashed capital, Fira, is a sight to behold. Wander the narrow streets or venture along the clifftop to pretty Oia for that iconic shot of the blue- domed church. Your ship will spend the evening in port, so take a ringside seat in a clifftop bar to watch the fiery sunset. Mykonos, Greece A cosmopolitan paradise that attracts more than its fair share of beautiful people, Mykonos Town is the archetypal image of the Cyclades, with immaculate whitewashed houses, windmills and winding alleys. Explore the sandy beaches, wander through the ancient temples on neighbouring Delos and venture out on your overnight stay to enjoy the legendary nightlife. Rhodes, Greece A visit to the old city of Rhodes is like stepping back to the time of the Crusades as you stroll the polished cobblestones of the Street of the Knights and explore the medieval Palace of the Grand Masters. Or join an excursion to the acropolis of Lindos, perched high on a hilltop overlooking the sparkling Bay of St Paul. Heraklion, Greece The busy capital of Crete is a former Venetian harbour with a history dating back even further, to the time of the Minoans. Visit Knossos, once home to Europe’s oldest civilisation and the setting of the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur and delve further into the art and creativity of the Minoans at the city’s extraordinary Archaeological Museum. Patmos, Greece Many believe the exiled Saint John the Evangelist wrote the Book of Revelation in a mountainside grotto on this beautiful island, which is fringed with pebbly beaches and limpid bays. Visit the hilltop monastery founded in his honour in 1088, but don’t miss the chic little port town of Skala, packed with stylish shops and cafés. 9 9
