CONTENT Tēnā koutou 2 Kia ora katoa Welcome to the 2019 The Learning Place Prospectus. We have named this year’s prospectus Innovative Approaches to NCEA, a departure from our Vocational Pathways title in the past. Overwhelmingly feedback from industry, schools, par- ents and students supports the attainment of life skills, vocational skills and soft skills for our young people as they enter employment. 70% of school leavers do not go directly go on to tertiary training. The need for employment readiness is essential for a successful transition to the workforce. Our range of courses provide tangible opportunities for students to be ready for work alongside the attainment of credits that contribute to the completion of NCEA levels. A means to be able to measure the abilities of your students that is not always covered by the curriculum. The Learning Place continues to lead in the delivery of quality learning opportu- nities in accessible formats to more than 400 schools across the country. Whether delivery at your school, at one of our venues across New Zealand or on our on- line platform there are opportunities for all students to achieve successful out- comes to assist their pathway into tertiary education or employment. We have some amazing stories from our past students who have achieved NCEA and gone onto secure employment as a result of a strong CV that features skills acquired from our courses. OV E RV I E W 5 The Learning Place Ltd is a NZQA registered and accredited training provider. We deliver voca- tional courses, aligned with Vocational Pathway unit standards, into over 400 secondary schools across New Zealand. We also deliver a number of industry aligned compliance courses both face to face and online. We are a close knit team with a strong kaupapa of equal opportunities in education and em- ployment. We have a commitment to education, Te Tiriti O Waitangi and celebrating the diver- sity of our learners. Courses All of the courses we deliver to schools have NZQA unit standards attached to them aligned with Vocational Pathways credits. We can deliver in schools or from one of our network of venues across the country. When you have less than 14 students to sign up for a course check our regular emails to you advertising the courses running in your area. You can either email the schools team in the office to make a booking or you can use our booking software, which allows you to book your students with ease. When you have 14 or more students we can deliver a course at your school. There are no additional charges for this option, and often this is a good way to get around the extra arrangements such as transport to and from a venue (We are able to book a venue off site if you do not have the space to host the course at school). Students have the opportunity to resit units that they may not be- come competent in straight away. We have a streamlined process in place to ensure success.
OVERVIEW 6 Our Kaiako We have a combination of full time and part time kaiako that bring a wealth of industry experience and teaching skills to their roles. Our Kaiako are either secondary school trained teachers, tertiary provider trainers or industry experts. The Learning Place brings in external contractors from time to time to provide specialist training knowledge and delivery. All external contractors are experts in their field of delivery and share our love of working with young people. They are chosen for their passion for sharing their skills and knowledge with our young people. We are committed to ongoing professional development for all of our people. The Vocational Pathways provide Vocational Pathways new ways to achieve NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 and develop pathways that progress to further study, train- ing and employment. The Vocation- al Pathways provide a framework for students to show how their learning and achieve-ment is valued in the workplace by aligning learn- ing to the skills needed for each particular industry. LEADERSHIP SKILLS 7 Our leadership and communication courses are designed to encourage students to speak up and realise confidence and self esteem within themselves. Each course is fully interactive and highly engaging. Students need to be prepared for intensive and often challenging work. Duration Cost COACHING 3 Three Days $350 + GST More than 145,000 secondary school students in New Zealand play sport and behind these students are great coaches. More often than not the coaches are secondary students them- selves. Our coaching course is perfect for students who are interested in or currently coach- ing a sports team. On the course students will learn the skills needed to effectively coach a sports team and how to plan a training session for maximum results. LIFE SKILLS 9 Employability skills are the skills or capabilities that are needed for work. These include behaviours, attitudes, beliefs and personal qualities such as self-management and resilience. New Zealand and international employers tell us these skills are essential for getting and keeping a job. Below are courses that support the skills identified on the New Zealand Employability skills framework. LIFE SKILLS 10 TEAM WORK 2 Duration Two Days Cost $250 + GST A two day, 10-credit course, that teaches students the key skills involved in working in a team. Often moving into the work- place or interacting with unfamiliar groups can be daunting and challenging. Teamwork explores the dynamics of participating in a team like a workplace or with a group of unfamiliar people. This two-day course gives students an introduction to the basic principles of customer service, in any work environment that has a customer service interface. HOSPITALITY SKILLS 1133 Hospitality is a fantastic early, or ongoing, career of jobs in the industry there are a range of transferable skills students can learn to take into other careers. Our hos- pitality courses are delivered by industry experts and provide core skills and define expectations for starting work in this exciting sector. HOSPITALITY SKILLS 1155 Duration Cost EVENT MANAGEMENT 3 Three Days $350 + GST This exciting three-day course requires students to work in a hands-on environment, organizing a small recreation event. Students work in teams, and with a small budget they organize the event from its initial concept, through to menus, equipment and hosting. The course begins with a unit standard around responsible drinking environments and practices, followed by critical knowledge around serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Students also have the opportunity to make and create mocktails. THERE IS NO ALCOHOL INVOLVED ON THIS COURSE.
