Crestview Local School District February, 2021 Message from the Superintendent Dear Rebel Nation: Happy Valentine’s Day a little early. February is a month of gratitude and love. The dictionary defines love as being two fold. 1) “an intense feeling of deep affection” and/or 2) “a great interest or pleasure in something.” I think both of those definitions help us appreciate the value of a Crestview education. Most winters I hear, “Oh my….when are we having a snow day?” This winter I heard, “I cannot wait until we are back in school.” Being an educator, I always love being in school. We also know that an “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” We are overjoyed and love having our students back in person. The brain is spurred by shared dialogue and we truly love expanding the minds of our youth. Each and every day together is a blessing! It has been a unique year, but one where we may have learned a very important job skill for any future. We all have to be flexible, creative, adaptable, and innovative. Most of our students will work multiple jobs in a lifetime. For my parents generation and many in my generation, careers were a lifetime. Our students are ready for anything. We love having you here and you will never be taken for granted. Go Rebels! On January 29th, we distributed report cards. Wow! We are past the first half of the year. We are continuing many activities and are getting creative on how to give students and families those special experiences. On Sunday, February 7, 2021, we will honor our new class of National Honor Society inductees in an in person ceremony. Conference night will be Thursday, February 11, 2021. Conferences will be virtual and information has been distributed at all buildings. Students will be off on Monday, February 15, 2021 in honor of President’s Day. Please stay tuned as some activities will be held in person and some virtually. We are continuing with activities like Academic Challenge, plays, music, and sports. Please remember that all gym home events this year are streamed on our YouTube channel at Rebel Sports and/or YSN live. Most away games are on YSN. The tournament games will begin later in the month. Please assist us in spreading the word as we begin to plan for the 2021-22 school year. The high school and middle school students will be scheduling in February. Also, please help us spread the word and welcome our new kindergarten class. We will be having kindergarten registration and screening on Friday, March 26, 2021 at Crestview Elementary School. Information is on our website for this event. We look forward to a large class. Each year we send open enrollment application forms in the mail, but this year they will be sent to you via email as a fillable form. Please fill out a form for each individual student with the information required and submit. This should assist us in efficiency for both the families and school district. You will receive an acceptance letter in June whether or not your child has been accepted for the 2021-22 school year. As you drive to school daily, the new waterline is nearing its way to our facility. It has progressed 3 miles from New Waterford. We thank Mayor Patrone and his staff, the engineers, and workers for their diligence. This waterline is vital for our future. We received $1.5 million in grants to pay for 75% of the cost to the school and community. We hope that it will also help our residents and businesses. I know for the school it solves one big headache; therefore, I have to say that I love the waterline. We know that the third nine weeks we will be in session Monday through Thursday and Fridays will be a remote day. We do not yet have an answer for the 4th grading period. Our decision will be based on data from in person and remote students. Currently we have 80% of our students attending daily. The elementary school has the most in person students. They actually have 86% of their students attending daily. This newsletter is meant to give information. We know the State of Ohio wants all students physically in school. School staff have been prioritized by the state, so our school staff will be getting vaccinated beginning this month. It will be six weeks from the first injection that a person is fully immunized. We expect the majority of our staff to be immunized by the end of March. As we get closer to the 4th nine weeks, we will survey families again to see if that will change percentages for in person instruction. We will use that information to assist our board, administration, and staff plan our format for the 4th grading period. You can check our website for updated information. We wish all of you a great February and a Happy Valentine’s Day. Sincerely, Matthew T. Manley, Superintendent
