NBHA Intro Trial
Howdy folks! Have you ever seen those National Bird Hunter Trials advertised and
wondered what that was all about? Have you ever wondered if your dog has what it takes
to make it around the backcourse with style? At the same time have you ever thought
maybe you had a have a horse? Or maybe the courses at the fabled McFarlin-Ingersoll
Ranch might be a little challenging? Or maybe all the pros hanging around are a little
intimidating. We get it! But we hope to convince you otherwise.
February 27 is your chance to find out in the comfort of your own living room (so
to speak!) The TBDA is holding a special NBHA trial at the Doris Oler Memorial Field
Trial Grounds. That’s right... the same place they run the Gun Dog Trials. It’s going to be
an amateur only trial with special stakes just for folks who haven’t ever run with us be-
fore. I want to take just a minute of your time and explain what the different stakes mean.
Since there is no live gun fire on course, none of our stakes require a retrieve. Each of the
judges will have a loaner pistol if you need one. Don’t not come to this trial because you
lack any gear! We will loan you whatever you need. With the exception of a dog... and
even that’s negotiable. Especially for youth! Except for cases of interference, we will not
be picking dogs up at this trial. We want you to complete your brace and have fun.
Amateur Shooting Dog: This 30-minute stake is for finished dogs who stand steady to
wing and shot, back and cover ground with efficiency and purpose. Intelligent ground
application and a medium but controlled range is desired.
Amatuer Shooting Dog Restricted: This is the same as above, except that you cannot
have placed a dog in a Shooting Dog stake before. If you enter this stake and ASD in the
same day and you place in ASD, you must scratch your dog from this stake.
Amatuer Shooting Dog Judment Ceases at Flush: This is a stake for a dog that is
steady to the flush and will back but does not have to stand the flush and shot. Quite
literally, at the flush, judgement ceases. Dogs in this stake may work at a closer range, but
still should hunt with purpose and intelligence. This is an excellent stake for those of you
that regularly run Gun Dog and have an interest in looking into NBHA.
Amateur Derby: This is a 20 minute stake for dogs welped on or after January 1 of
2019. In this stake we are looking for the potential for a shooting dog. Derbies to not
have to be steady, though in the spring, steadiness is often rewarded. Bird contact is to be
rewarded. Ground application comes into play here.
Amatuer Puppy: This is a 20-minute stake for dogs welped on or after January 1 of
2020. For puppies we are looking for that fire! We want a dog that is bold, independent,
excited about his work with athleticism and style. No steadiness or backing is required.
This is a great place to start. You and the dog can do no wrong!
