Ori Kotler is a name you do not know. You have (probably) never heard of him and have no connection to him. Who is he? He is a young 20 year old who is currently serving as commander in the advanced training of the Rotem Unit of the Giv’ati Brigade of the IDF. These young people (and they really are incredibly young, just 22) are not only the heroes of the IDF but even the leadership of the young men and women under them. I was introduced to Ori through the wonders of social media this week (it’s the week of Chanukah at the time of writing this) and I wanted to share with you some of his thoughts. He said that in Israel there is a popular expression (especially in the army) that if you have a hammer in your hand, everything in the world looks to you as if it’s a nail. But he then went on to say that what would everything in the world look like if we had a candle in our hands? He wrote the following: “This is the purpose of Hanukkah, to educate us to find the light in everything and in every person, to see the reality on a deeper level, to discover the secret that is within it. And if we can live in this way for 8 days, then we must take this principle from Hanukkah and bring it into the rest of the year. These days, (the eight days of Hanukkah), which were set as days of praising and thanking, days of marveling - marveling at the sublimity of every Mitzvah, at the majesty of sanctity, these days are the origin of all the marveling which we will experience throughout the year. Every marvel which brings with it greatness - is taken from Hanukkah. The ability to marvel and be excited about every point of light in our world, about every point of light during the year - is supposed to be like a candle before our feet.” Chanukah may be over, but we now can choose how we see the world. And with a candle in our hands, the whole world can be one where we continually see and experience the wonder that is before us. Wishing you all a safe and warm winter. Rabbi Mark Fishman 4 Tevet – Adar 1 5779

Hebrew Academy’s year has been amazing! Our educators and Shinshinim, Tohar and Michal have been busy teaching the children interesting facts about Israel. They learned about a famous ice cream shop called Glida Be’er Sheva, participated in Israeli games Yan Yabasha and Dag Maluach, played bingo while learning about Bnai Shimon, enjoyed games themed around a TV show called Hakol Holech and recently learned about Ilan Ramon the first Israeli Astronaut. We also had our first Shabbaton weekend at Camp Bnai Brith. This amazing weekend took place at the end of November and the children had a great time making rainbow challahs, playing games, celebrating Shabbat, listening to enthralling stories, having an outdoor Israeli scavenger hunt challenge and even enjoyed a pool party! Since it was close to the start of Chanukah, they even made their own chanukiahs! 8 Tevet – Adar 1 5779
In December we had a beautiful Chanukah play and presentation for parents and grandparents. Each class presented songs while the Grade 6 class narrated the play. Everyone enjoyed some pizza, latkas & donuts! January 16th Kitah Hey (Grade 5) class and parents will participate in the 2nd Jewish Journey with Rabbi Fishman January 23rd Parent Teacher Interviews February 20th Kitah Daled (Grade 4) Havdalah Program Presentation 9 January – February 2019
We have been having a great time enjoying our monthly BTY programs. November brought us our very first Amazing Mitzvah Limo Race where the children were split into 3 teams and completed various mitzvot travelling by limo of course! The children collected ingredients, made sandwiches for the homeless and needy families which were then donated to Action Jeunesse to distribute. They went door to door collecting non-perishables and brought them to On Rock’s food bank where they helped sort boxes of food. Another mitzvah they did was construct winter cat shelters using bins, foam and hay for the strays that live outside during our harsh winters. Congrats to all the participants! Everyone was a winner! Our December program was a lot of fun. We watched the magic and illusions of Jojo from Montreal who revealed some magic tricks and we got to try them out ourselves. Mini magicians were created that day! We also had another amazing Family “Light Up the Night” Chanukah Party. Jointly with Or Shalom, with just over 300 attendees, we had an amazing time with crafts, donut decorating, Lego dreidels, games, music and an LED light show with a very cool Robot. It was a wonderful event to celebrate Chanukah. Upcoming BTY Events: Jan 20: Potions & Cool Animals Feb 17: TBA Feb 26-March 1: Spring Break Camp 10 Tevet – Adar 1 5779

Tu m’as redonné la vie!»
