This Commission embodies the spirit of power-together: too many women are directly affected by gender-based violence and the entire world is impacted, yet the voices of most victims and survivors are silenced. This Commission will harness the global power of academics and leaders who will demonstrate that GBV is a pandemic and a health, economic and equity imperative and put forward new evidence on how it can be curtailed.

The Lancet reaches millions of readers every week, providing a unique platform with global reach for sharing knowledge that is key to ending GBV”
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative Korea Peace Now! Women Mobilizing to End the War About the campaign: Korea Peace Now! Women Mobilizing to End the War is a global campaign to educate, organize and advocate for a Korea peace agreement by 2020. By the end of 2020, the campaign aims to have made significant headway toward: • A peace-building process including a formal ending of the Korean War, a Korea peace treaty or agreement, and normalized relations among the US, North Korea, and South Korea.
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative • Tangible demilitarization including removal of landmines, reduction of bases/troops, and steps toward denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. • Women’s leadership and gender-based analysis in the Korea peace process. • Lifting of broad-based sanctions against North Korea, particularly those impacting humanitarian conditions. • Redefining security from national security based on war and militarism to a feminist understanding of security centered on basic human needs and ecological sustainability.
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative Key points: • Our campaign brings a gender perspective to the ongoing Korean conflict by highlighting the ways that the ongoing Korean War disproportionately impacts women’s lives. • Our campaign strengthens the leadership of and builds relationships among women peacemakers: In December 2018, Korea Peace Now! organized a historic meeting of women peacemakers from Northeast Asia — North Korea, South Korea, China, and Japan — as well as Russia, Canada, and the US to discuss women’s leadership in building peace in Korea and in the region.
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative Our campaign advocates for the advancement of the rights and status of women: Our campaign recently commissioned a report, The Human Costs and Gendered Impact of Sanctions on North Korea, which found that sanctions are having adverse consequences for the humanitarian situation and economic development of the country, particularly harming women. Economically, they hamper women’s economic security by targeting sectors in which most workers are women, especially the textile sector. Socially, they destabilize society in a way in which global studies show lead to increased gender discrimination. Physically, they put women’s well-being, health, and safety at risk as they struggle to ensure enough sustenance and health care for their families and themselves.
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative The report’s authors recommend that we further study these impacts and take immediate actions to mitigate the adverse consequences. Our campaign calls for women’s participation in the Korea peace process: Research shows that the participation of civil society groups, including women’s organizations, makes a peace agreement more likely to succeed and to last. Including women’s equal participation and meaningful involvement in peace processes is a commitment of both UN Security Council Resolution 1325 of 2000 and the U.S.’s Women, Peace and Security Act of 2017, which recognize the crucial role that women play in conflict prevention, management, and resolution.
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative As of September 2019, 82 countries — including the U.S. and South Korea — have adopted National Action Plans for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. Despite this, there are very few women involved in the official Korea peace process. It’s time to declare an end to the Korean War and replace the Armistice with a peace agreement, which would take the threat of war off the table and improve the security of Koreans, Americans, and the world. A peace agreement would be a crucial step toward demilitarizing and denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative We must lift sanctions that harm the North Korean civilian population, especially those impacting humanitarian conditions. Sanctions in their current form may be contrary to international law, in particular humanitarian and human rights norms. Sanctions are ineffective as a tool to achieve goals related to human rights and denuclearization. We must peacefully resolve the conflict underlying the sanctions regime: end the Korean War and work toward a peace agreement. For the Korea peace process to be successful, women must have a seat at the table.
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative Our achievements so far: Building political space for peace with North Korea Earlier this year, we brought South Korean women Parliamentarians to engage with members of U.S. Congress and foreign policy experts in DC on the urgent need to end the Korean War. In the US, Korea Peace Now! campaign partner Women Cross DMZ worked with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) to draft and introduce H. Res. 152, a Congressional resolution to end the Korean War with a peace agreement. So far, 40 members of Congress — including progressive members such as Barbara Lee, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Ilhan Omar — have co-sponsored it.
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative We have established official channels of communication with all three governments: US, North Korea and South Korea. In June 2019, we met with Stephen Biegun, US Special Representative for North Korea, as well as Moon Chung-in, Special Advisor to South Korean President Moon Jae-in for Foreign Affairs and National Security, on ways to advance the peace process. Grassroots organizing + coalition building There are 10 Korea Peace Now! grassroots chapters across the U.S.: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Washington, DC.
CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE Jody Williams – Chair, Nobel Women’s Initiative In October 2019, we organized a national call-in day for Korea peace with other peace. We generated 576 calls and 3,957 emails to members of U.S. Congress. Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. It’s crucial that we end the war and work toward a peace agreement in an inclusive process that considers the rights and status of women.

CONVERSATIONISTS PLEDGE The Case For Her “Half the world menstruates for a significant part of their lives. 300 million people menstruate on any given day. Menstruation is an entirely normal biological process and a sign of good health— and yet it is still shrouded in myths and misconceptions. As a result, menstruating women and girls are often excluded and stigmatized. Despite being an integral part of women and girls’ sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), menstruation is largely overlooked by traditional development programming and funding. Menstrual health is critical for the fulfilment of women and girls’ rights and the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Case For Her and our partners call for increased and improved investment in menstrual health by bringing menstrual health into the global health agenda, as a crucial component of SRHR policy, programming and funding”.
