Vampire diaries books vs show ending

There were many changes made to L.J Smith's The Vampire Diaries books when it was adapted into a television series. The show was written for television by Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson and, although many characters from the books featured in the small-screen adaptation, big changes were made that altered the overall story. The show's
differences set it apart from the books and tell a different but equally compelling story but, although the two adaptations are very different, there are still some similarities between the books and the show. Here are some things that were changed from The Vampire Diaries book series and some things that stayed the same. Updated on June 14th,
2021, by Gabriela Silva: The Vampire Diaries is still incredibly successful even after ending its run on television. Before the show even went on the air, it was already buzz-worthy as it was an on-screen adaptation of the popular book series by L.J. Smith. Fans of the books before the show and new fans may have realized that the show’s creators
tweaked some characters, storylines, and details. Some aspects were kept the same like the needed love triangle. Some differences changed the way characters were seen on the show. Even characters' appearances aren't as they were described in the pages of the books. We've added a few more of the most major differences between the books and
the show. 14 The Same: Certain Characters' Tragic Pasts The events that changed Elena in the show also occur in the books. In both versions, Elena’s parents die in a tragic car crash. This leaves her and her sibling to become the responsibility of their aunt. Another small detail that was kept the same from the books was Damon’s relationship with his
father. In the show, flashbacks reveal that Damon and his father had a strained relationship. His father even made Damon eat his pet turkey and hurt him when taking the blame for missing money. This is accurate from what fans know from the books. 13 Changed: Tyler’s Character Fans of the books are aware that Tyler was never meant to be a
main character. Besides his last name change, the show’s creators decided to make Tyler part of the main cast. This meant giving him a much more detailed and amped-up storyline than what was seen in the books – like becoming a hybrid. There was one major change that needs to be made about Tyler to make him worthy for the small screen. The
books portray Tyler as a much more aggressive and predator-like character who even makes a forceful advance at Elena. This Tyler wouldn’t work for the show, so it was one of the better changes. 12 The Same: Klaus’s Involvement Klaus is easily one of the most feared but well-loved villains to appear on the show. Klaus, being one of the main villains,
was kept mostly the same as they were in the book series but with some changes here and there. Just like in the show, Klaus is one of the original vampires with immense power. He also comes to use Tyler for his own gain and evil plan in the show and books and Klaus also had a small rivalry with Katherine just like the show depicts. However, Klaus
becomes a villain all the way through the book series, while Klaus in the show is only seen for one or two seasons. 11 Changed: Elena’s Angel Storyline The show made some tweaks to Elena’s story but ultimately cut out a huge chunk of her journey. The show never included the celestial, meaning they didn’t include the existence of angels. In the
book series, Elena appears as a guardian angel to save Stefan, Bonnie, and the others. After doing what she had to, Stefan screams in agony over their separation once again. Elena then finds herself dropped on the ground and brought back to life. This storyline had no real purpose in the grander scheme of the show though. 10 Changed: Elena
Gilbert's Physical Appearance Elena Gilbert is played by Nina Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries. Her character has long brown hair and olive skin, though Elena in the books is described as the polar opposite to her show counterpart. In the books, Elena has pale blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. She still shares a strong resemblance to Katherine
although the two are not completely identical. Katherine's hair is a few shades darker than Elena's and Elena is much taller. 9 The Same: Caroline And Tyler's Relationship Caroline Forbes and Tyler Lockwood became romantically involved during season two of The Vampire Diaries. After Caroline becomes a vampire and Tyler becomes a werewolf, the
two bond over their newfound supernatural abilities, with Caroline helping Tyler through his monthly change into a wolf. In the books, Caroline and Tyler are also in a relationship. Caroline becomes a werewolf after falling pregnant with Tyler's child and they later get married and have two children. 8 Changed: Katherine's Name And Backstory
Katherine Pierce is one of The Vampire Diaries' most iconic characters. The sire of Stefan and Damon Salvatore, Katherine became a vampire over five hundred years ago and spent the next five centuries fleeing from Klaus Mikaelson. Katherine's book counterpart is much different. Her full name is Katherine von Swartzchild and she was a young
German girl who was turned into a vampire by Klaus unwillingly before she meets and sires the Salvatore brothers. 7 The Same: The Stefan-Elena-Damon Love Triangle The main premise of The Vampire Diaries is the same in the television show and the book series. Elena Gilbert, a young human girl, falls in love with two vampire brothers named
Stefan and Damon Salvatore. In both the books and the show, Elena initially enters into a relationship with Stefan Salvatore after the vampire enrolls at her school. Her feelings for Damon grow throughout the series, with Elena eventually falling in love with the other Salvatore brother. 6 Changed: Meredith Fell aka Sulez Meredith Fell is a minor
character in The Vampire Diaries. She first appeared in the third season of the show as a doctor at the hospital in Mystic Falls and takes an interest in Alaric. Meredith and Alaric were romantically involved for a brief period, before Alaric's descent into darkness drove them apart. Meredith has a much bigger role in the books. Her full name is
Meredith Sulez and she is one of Elena's best friends. Meredith has a vital role in the group and is one of the only characters to resist Damon's charm. 5 The Same: Elena Becomes A Vampire Elena's transition to vampirism occurs in the show and the books. In the season three finale, Elena dies with Damon's blood in her system and is turned into a
vampire. In the books, Elena becomes a vampire after consuming Stefan and Damon's blood, with The Fury focusing on her adjustment to the undead. In both mediums, however, Elena does not stay a vampire. In the show, she takes the cure and becomes human again, and, in the books, she dies as a vampire during a confrontation with Katherine,
though she is brought back to life. 4 Changed: The Name Of The Town In The Vampire Diaries, Elena Gilbert and her friends live in the small town of Mystic Falls in Virginia. The Salvatore brothers originally lived in the same town during the 1800s and, over a thousand years before that, the Original family settled there and became vampires. In the
book series, Elena and her friends live in a picturesque town called Fell's Church in southern Virginia. It unconsciously attracts supernatural creatures such as witches and werewolves due to the several lines of crossed energy running through the town. 3 The Same: Alaric Saltzman's Profession All of the characters in The Vampire Diaries were
altered in the adaptation from a book series to a television show. However, the character of Alaric Saltzman retained some of his original traits, including his profession as a History teacher at Elena's high school. Alaric studies the supernatural in the books and hunts them in the television series. He is romantically involved with Meredith in both
mediums as well as being a caring and compassionate figure in the series. 2 Changed: Elena's Siblings One of Elena's strongest and most defining relationships in the television series is with her younger brother Jeremy. After the death of their parents, Elena and Jeremy live with their aunt Jenna until her death in season two, with Elena taking
guardianship of her brother afterward. Jeremy Gilbert does not exist in the books. Instead, Elena has a younger sister named Margaret who is only a young child and has a minor role in the series. Margaret is said to share a strong resemblance to her older sister. 1 The Same: Stefan Is The 'Good' Brother And Damon Is The 'Bad' Brother Stefan and
Damon pursue Elena in The Vampire Diaries' book and television show. Although both of the brothers are vampires, it is made clear early on that Stefan is the more compassionate and restrained, whereas Damon is vicious, bloodthirsty, and disregarding human life. Damon grows throughout the series and becomes more selfless as his relationship
with Elena develops. Despite his growth, however, he remains the darker Salvatore brother as Stefan works to suppress his nature as a vampire and protect and preserve human life. the vampire diaries About The Author Leah Flavell (280 Articles Published) More From Leah Flavell So this is basically just a rant about the differences between the books and the tv show. Now this show is my favorite show, so don’t think that I hate it or anything. However, there are some things the fans just don’t know about with the book to tv
show adaptation. Characters: Elena Gilbert: -Book physical appearance: Golden blonde hair, lapis lazuli eyes, olive-toned skin -Show physical appearance: brown hair, brown eyes, natural tan-ish skin. -Book personality: She starts out as being very manipulative (Basically, she started out exactly like Katherine Pierce) but as the series goes on, she
goes through major character development and grows into a strong woman. She goes through many different physical stages, such as going from Human to Vampire to Ghost to Angel and back to human again. She does start out as being with Stefan, but eventually she falls for Damon as well. -Show Personality: She’s a “goody-goody”, always the one
who makes all of the right choices, always sacrificing herself for her friends. She’s the complete opposite of what she was like in the book series. Damon Salvatore: -Damon’s pretty much exactly the same in the book to show adaptation. One of the only differences is he has black eyes, not the blue-ish green eyes that we associate him with now. He’s
also Italian in the books, not American, and was born during the Renaissance. So, he’s a great deal older in the books. -He goes through major character development in both the show and books. He goes from bad to not so bad. In the show, he goes completely good. Stefan Salvatore: -He’s also exactly the same in the book to show adaptation. The
same differences (nearly) as well. He’s got (from what I can tell) blue-ish eyes, but in the books, they’re green. He’s also Italian in the books, not American, and was born during the Renaissance. So, he’s a great deal older in the books than in the show. -He’s pretty constant, always good in the books. In the show, he spirals a lot, going from Dorothy
Gale good to Darth Vader bad within episodes. He does this frequently in the show. Bonnie Bennett (McCullough): -Book appearance: fair hair, hazel eyes, translucent skin. -Show Appearance: African American, brown eyes, brown hair, dark skin. -Book personality: She’s very fragile and very dependent on her friends, at the beginning anyway. She
eventually goes through character development and becomes a strong, independent woman who will do anything for her friends. She matures as the series goes on and is a potential love interest for Damon Salvatore in the book series. She’s a psychic. -Show personality: She’s strong-willed, despises Damon Salvatore, and will not be pushed around.
She’s a witch. -Basically there was no character development at all. She remains the same through the entirety of the show. They also changed her last name. Caroline Forbes: -Book Appearance: auburn-red hair, green eyes, bronze skin. -Show appearance: blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin. Book personality: She is extremely competitive with Elena,
hates her (though, they were formerly good friends) and is an all around raging biatch. She turns into a werewolf in the books (not a vampire at any point) and is the love interest of Tyler Smallwood (Lockwood in the show). -Show personality: She starts out as being super shallow and quiet honestly annoying before she is turned into a vampire (never
a werewolf). Upon contracting Vampirism, she goes through huge character development, becoming a major protagonist, great friend, and constant in the show. She does end up dating nearly every guy protagonist in the show. Characters with minor changes: Meredith Sulez (Fell in show) was a major protagonist in the books but is barely mentioned
in the show. Matthew Donovan (Honeycutt in books) has no relation (in the books) to Vicki Bennett (Donovan in show). Katherine Pierce (von Swartzchild in books) is only a few years older than the Salvatore brothers, was a sweet angel who looked like Elena (Doppelgangers were not mentioned) and she morphed into this monster. She is killed by
Elena Gilbert (which is also how Elena died). She’s also German, not Bulgarian in the books. Jeremy Gilbert was a traded character for Elena’s little sister named Margaret (in the books) and he’s much older. Elena’s Aunt is named Jenna in the show, but Judith in the books. Judith has a fiance in the books, but Jenna is single (thought she does end up
dating Alaric Saltzman in the show before she dies) in the show. Alaric Saltzman is pretty much the same except he was brought in by the mayor and principal of the school about the vampire problem in the books, but comes in by himself in the show. In the books, he is the love interest of Meredith Sulez. In the show, he dates several women (they all
either die or remarry when he dies and later comes back to life). "Hello, brother."Would you believe it's been four years since Stefan and Damon Salvatore uttered those words for the very last time, leaving us all in floods of tears? The Vampire Diaries, based on the popular novel series by L J Smith and tapping into our teen obsession with sexy blood-
suckers, became a pop culture phenomenon. Despite airing its last ever episode in 2017 and not returning for a season nine, fans are still invested in updates from Mystic Falls – whether it be real-world cast reunions, or fan-favourite character news from its ongoing spin-offs. With so much interest still there (and more fans investing in the epic Elena
Gilbert love triangle thanks to Netflix), why did the show – which originally aired on The CW – come to an end with season eight? The CW According to showrunner and co-creator Julie Plec, there was no simple, single answer. "There were a lot of things that went into [the decision to end the series]," she told Hollywood Reporter back in 2017. "Some
logistics, some contractual, where you were just like, 'OK if this person doesn't come back, is the show still going to be good? What if they do come back, but we don't know until the end?' A lot of that silly stuff you're not supposed to talk about. Logistical stuff," Plec added. She also noted that the decision ultimately came down to the storytelling, with
it feeling like the right time to draw Vampire Diaries to a close. "Once we started talking about quote-unquote 'hell' and quote-unquote 'peace,' which is the Vampire Diaries version of heaven, it felt like if we're telling those stories, and we're telling stories about our characters trying to find their ultimate redemption and salvation with the end result
being peace or hell, then it certainly now feels like this is the last season," Plec told the publication at the time. "Because if you can't take those journeys all the way to their conclusion, then why are we telling these stories in the first place?" Warner Bros. Nina Dobrev, who played central character Elena Gilbert since the show's inception (oh, and let's
also never forget Elena's evil doppelgänger Katherine Pierce), agreed to return for the big season eight finale. Over the years, many have speculated whether her departure – which played out on screen in an emotional ending to season six – had, in fact, contributed to the eventual decision to cancel the show altogether. The actor made the initial
announcement on Instagram in 2015, telling fans at the time that she had "just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries" and that she had wanted to share that "it wasn't just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party". Dobrev also revealed that she "always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six-season adventure", calling that time "the journey of a lifetime".In a statement to US Weekly, Julie Plec described Nina's exit as both "bittersweet and
beautiful"."Nina is excited to spread her wings, get some rest, travel the world, and also take it by storm, and we support her a thousand-fold," Plec added. It was also confirmed, then and there, that the Vampire Diaries show would go on: "We look forward to the insane and exciting challenge of continuing to tell stories of our Salvatore Brothers and
our much-loved and gifted ensemble."But, for many, it was the draw of Elena's epic romances with vampire brothers Stefan and Damon (but mostly Damon) that compelled them to watch. Without one-third of the trio, how long could VD continue? The writers were smart, writing the gap that Elena left behind into said storyline. Sure, she wasn't seen
on-screen, but her presence was still felt right up until the big reunion that season eight's last ever episode delivered. The show's ratings were said to be in decline, although this can't be entirely pin-pointed to Dobrev's departure – the numbers were reportedly already dwindling – some thought this could have been one of those logistical factors in the
eventual decision to draw the show to an end. But Plec has previously insisted (via Variety) that "we hadn't had the plug pulled – we had chosen to say goodbye".Vampire Diaries' ending provided fans with closure, with an emotional pay-off for each and every central relationship that viewers had invested in right from the very first pilot episode. With
spin-off series Legacies now onto its third season, and with a fourth on the way, Elena and Damon's happily-ever-after is still well and truly alive. Literally. The Vampire Diaries' descendant show is focused on the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted, which was set up by Alaric Saltzman and Caroline Forbes, and also provides regular
updates about other Mystic Fall favourites, including Bonnie Bennett and Matt Donovan. The Vampire Diaries aired on The CW, and is now available to stream on Netflix.
