January 6, 2022 Connecting You to SCCF Events Put on your walking shoes, support SCCF in fun and memorable ways, meet a world- famous explorer, learn about native plants, and take the pulse of environmental issues and priorities with this menu of events that SCCF is hosting to kick off a vibrant, informed new year. Please note: COVID-19 protocols will be observed at all events. See details for each event at its registration link. Natives in the Garden Be sure to stop by the Natives in the Garden exhibit at the Native Landscapes & Garden Center demonstration gardens at Bailey Homestead Preserve. The outdoor exhibit, in partnership with the Sanibel- Captiva Art League, features vibrant, whimsical pieces set among lush native plantings. The exhibit runs to April 1 and has been changing throughout the season as new works are added. All pieces are available for purchase and a percentage of each sale benefits SCCF. Pine Island Sounds On-the-Water Concerts Have you reserved your seat for the Pine Island Sounds concert on Sunday, Jan. 16, featuring Brooklyn-based guitarist and soul singer Ryan Scott (ryanscottguitar.com) Board The Lady Chadwick for an on-the- water celebration of music, sunsets, and SCCF’s critical mission. This is the third cruise of the series. The final cruise of the season is on Sunday, Feb. 13 with Twisted Pine (twistedpineband.com). RED, BLUE, GREEN: An Introduction to Water Quality in Southwest Florida RED, BLUE, GREEN is a visual introduction to the water quality dynamics of our region, including harmful algal blooms, management of water flow, the relationship of water quality to the local economy, impacts on wildlife, and organizations working for improvement and change. The exhibit is produced in partnership by Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, and The News- Press. This exhibit is open to the public Jan. 15–June 12 during regular museum hours and is included in the cost of admission. Learn more at shellmuseum.org. Evenings at the Homestead: A Season of Change – A Two-Part Conversation Join us for a two-part series that takes the pulse of the islands’ natural systems and local efforts to keep them healthy. SCCF Marine Laboratory Director Eric Milbrandt, Ph.D., and SCCF Research Associate Leah Reidenbach will be the January speakers. SCCF Coastal Resilience Manager Carrie Schuman, Ph.D., and hydrologic modeler Paul Julian, Ph.D., will present in February. The Evenings take place 7pm-8:30pm on Tuesday, Jan. 18 and Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Bailey Homestead Preserve (1300 Periwinkle Way). Tickets are $10 and there is a virtual option. Weekly Nature and Botanical Walks Lace up your walking shoes for naturalist-guided immersions in nature. Lindblad Preserve Trail Participants get an up-close look at the Sanibel Slough and rare plants each Tuesday and Thursday at 10am, beginning Thursday, Jan. 13. No registration is required; a $5 donation is suggested. Bailey Homestead Preserve Shipley Trail Learn about SCCF’s mission-driven work on the historic property, along with stories about its history each Wednesday and Thursday at 10am, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 12. No registration is required; a $5 donation is suggested. Weeds ‘n’ Seeds Botanical Journeys Free, weekly botanical journeys organized by Weeds ‘n’ Seeds are held each Monday, 9am-11am, at various locations on Sanibel. Next week’s, on Jan. 10, is at Frannie’s Preserve on Tarpon Bay Road. Pre-registration is required; group size is limited. Note: Registration for each week's walk will open on the previous Tuesday at 8am. Benedict Key Habitat Restoration Project Coastal Watch is seeking volunteers interested in assisting with SCCF’s Benedict Key restoration project in Pine Island Sound. In 2004, Hurricane Charley devastated the key; the south side remains bare. Volunteers will be transported via the R/V Norma Campbell and will be planting mangrove seedlings and laying fossil shells to promote oyster reef growth. January restoration trips run 9am-1pm: Tuesday, January 11; Friday, January 14; Wednesday, January 26; Friday, January 28. Sanibel Sea School Programs Sanibel Sea School offers daily programming for all ages to explore Sanibel's diverse habitats. Sea Squirts courses for ages 4 to 6 are Monday morning. Half-day courses for ages 6 to 13 run weekly. Discover beachcombing walks for families are Thursday morning. Read more and register here. Fourth Annual McCarthy Lecture Series Save the date for Friday, Feb. 4, when SCCF welcomes renowned underwater explorer Bob Ballard as the speaker of the fourth annual McCarthy Lecture Series. The evening presentation will be held outdoors at the Bailey Homestead Preserve pavilion. Stay tuned for future details.
