18TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON CATALYSIS • 14-19 JULY 2024 • LYON - FRANCE 1 - INVITATION TO FRANCE Letter of Invitation To the Officers and Council Members of the International Association of the Catalysis Societies (IACS) The French catalysis community is honored to submit a bid for the 18th International Congress on Catalysis in Lyon for the year 2024 (14-19 July). The French candidacy is supported by the French Ministry of Education and Research, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), most major French universities, the Académie des Sciences, the Académie des Technologies, the association of Maison de la Chimie Foundation, and the European Federation of Catalysis Societies (EFCATS). All French academic laboratories related to catalysis, along with the majority of the industrial companies that demonstrate a keen interest in catalysis, strongly support this bid. All these partners will be very helpful in ensuring the scientific and practical success of this event. France’s solid history in catalysis continues today thanks to a young generation of talented scientists in all major fields of catalysis. Building on these strong roots, the French catalysis community wishes to promote disruptive catalysis with the objective of building a better world. In a spirit of cross-fertilization between disciplines, worldwide societal challenges including the environment, energy, mobility, and the circular economy will be addressed through invited lectures and dedicated sessions in line with the main conference slogan “ROOTS AND WINGS FOR A BETTER WORLD”. David Farrusseng and Hélène Olivier Bourbigou IACS Award Ceremony, ICC 2016, Bejing 4

18TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON CATALYSIS • 14-19 JULY 2024 • LYON - FRANCE 2 - CATALYSIS IN FRANCE France has a long-standing tradition of research and development in all fields of catalysis - heterogeneous, homogeneous, enzymes, electrocatalysis, and more. Along the way, a number of major discoveries and famous scientists have left their mark on history. One of them was Paul Sabatier (Nobel Prize 1912), who paved the way for many achievements in modern industrial catalysis when, along with Jean-Baptiste Senderens, he discovered that finely divided metals are active for the hydrogenation of olefins and unsaturated compounds. Another example is François Gault, a brilliant French scientist who worked on catalytic mechanisms and whose name is honored through the François Gault Lectureship, the highest European distinction in the field of catalysis (EFCATS lecture series). More recent examples are the pioneering work of Henri Kagan on enantioselective catalysis, or the work of Yves Chauvin on the mechanism of olefin metathesis, which granted him the Nobel Prize in 2005. Beyond such individual success stories, the French catalysis community can trace its own unique roots to the stimulating concurrence and convergences that have developed within its researchers community and schools of thoughts. In France, catalysis developed as a distinct scientific field in the 1960s with the support of the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS), universities, and the coal and oil industry. Today, a strong, dynamic research community focuses its efforts on catalysis. France’s younger generation of catalysis researchers and engineers work in more than 20 specialized laboratories. More than 50 laboratories are distributed over the entire national territory and deal with catalytis studies of some sort, across all domains of catalysis. This means that catalysis research groups are present in almost all French universities. In total, this represents more than 1600 academic researchers. French academic research on catalysis also focuses on industrial and societal preoccupations thanks to a close 8

18TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON CATALYSIS • 14-19 JULY 2024 • LYON - FRANCE 4 - SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM Conference Theme The scientific program will be based on the following elementary components (see Figure on next page for details): • The consolidated roots of our discipline, being fundamental aspects of catalysis in its multidisciplinarity. Developments and practical achievements in the many scientific fields that serve as a basis for Catalysis, will be at the core of this part of the program. These will be found among sub- disciplines of chemistry, biology, physics and digital science, involving experimentation and simulation at several scales. • The young roots consisting in innovative concepts and methods, and of new connections between existing methods, that will emerge between 2020 and 2024, as solutions to the deciphering of increasingly complex catalytic systems. • The branches holding fruits, composed of mature and emerging (but already well identified today) fields of application, in their diversity. Aspects linked to environmental concerns, sustainability, energy production and storage, chemicals, will be covered. • The shoots, consisting in new growth territories made possible by cross-fertilization of the knowledge obtained on mature and emerging fields, that will appear between 2020 and 2024, and that are expected to contribute to breakthroughs in our societies. All aspects of Catalysis will be covered, including homogeneous and heterogeneous, electrocatalysis and bio-catalysis, upon thermal and non-conventional activations, as well as combinations of these, making use of multi-scale approaches from fundamentals to technology-oriented questions, including the High throughout catalytic reactors 12

For the first time, the worldwide catalysis community will have a participatory and interactive opportunity to contribute with its ideas and energy to the preparation of an ICC. A participatory ICC During 2020-2024 period, the catalysis community will be invited to participate in debates focusing on major issues in catalysis. These debates will be hosted using interactive web tools (such as forums and social media) and moderated by the ICC2024 organizing team and volunteers. The objective is to promote individual or group initiatives around catalysis that are rooted in the great vitality and imagination of our community and that will eventually lead to labeled ICC2024 events (whether face-to-face or virtual). Discussions will be open on all aspects of interest to the catalysis community that could enrich the content and organization of ICC2024. This process will bring to light emerging topics that should be included in the program, place emphasis on the hottest topics in addition to those already listed (see page 13), and provide inspiration for satellite events. The Scientific Committee, with the support of recommendations from the IACS, will ensure a fair balance between well-established topics and new topics arising from the participatory process. ROOTS AND WINGS FOR A BETTER WORLD • BUILD YOUR ICC! 9 - LYON, CONFERENCE VENUE Lyon: when History meets Modernity Lyon, the 3rd largest French city, is a historical cradle of the French chemistry that started to develop in the late eighteenth century. It is commonly known as the ‘‘chemistry valley’’ and hosts more than 500 companies in all sectors of chemistry. It houses many R & D centers, training institutions and competitiveness clusters such as TECHTERA, PLASTIPOLIS, TENERDIS, Lyon-BIOPOLE and AXELERA, a major French cluster in the field of chemistry and the environment. Ideally located at the heart of Europe, less than two hours away from Paris, the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, Lyon attracts about 150 000 students every year. This important student community (10% are foreigners) feeds the research laboratories with talents that stimulates innovation, and a very strong interaction between academia and industry. Naturally, thanks to this very fertile environment, Lyon is among the most attractive city in Europe for business and quality of life. With more than 2000 years of history, Lyon, formerly Lugdunum, is definitely looking to the future. Chemical industries and academic laboratories are actively collaborating towards the development of a brighter future. Hence, in Lyon, the concept of sustainable chemistry is not a fashion but a reality that fosters the different communities to work in concert. A historical city and a UNESCO world heritage site 500 hectares of the city of Lyon are classified as a ‘‘UNESCO World Heritage Site’’ since 1998.
