Patron: Gina McCormack CONCERTS 2019-2020 73rd season World-class chamber music concerts in the Eastgate Theatre, Peebles www.musicinpeebles.org.uk
Welcome Our 2019/20 season marks another stage in the development of Music in Peebles as, after 72 years, we replace membership with subscription. We believe this better reflects our determination to avoid any hint of exclusivity, and it also allows us to offer our subscribers the advantages of the box office facilities provided by our wonderful Eastgate Theatre (online booking, payment by credit card etc). We hope you will welcome these changes. Some things, however, stay the same: the quality of music and the calibre of performers remain of the highest order, and there is the usual wide diversity of repertoire. We welcome back some distinguished guests in the form of the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, whose authority in Shostakovich is unmatched, and the peerless combination of James Gilchrist and Anna Tilbrook, similarly without equal in Schubert. Two of the world’s most exciting young pianists, Japanese Yu Kosuge and Romanian Florian Mitrea, bring fascinating programmes, whilst from closer to home, concerts by the Bach Ensemble of Edinburgh and Trio Ecossaise feature all-baroque and all- female composers respectively. We are delighted to repeat one of the great successes of 2018/19 in the form of our Patron’s Concert, in which Gina McCormack will present another showcase of outstanding young musicians from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Finally, we invite you to let your hair down at the end of the season in the company of the Ugly Bug Ragtime Three. Never let it be said that you don’t get variety at Music in Peebles! Enjoy all this, save money and enjoy other benefits by buying a season ticket - details are at the end of this brochure. Whether or not you become a subscriber, I look forward to welcoming you to our concerts. Sunday 8 September 2019 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Fitzwilliam String Quartet Lucy Russell & Marcus Barcham Stevens (violins) Alan George (viola), Sally Pendlebury (cello) Earl of Kellie String Quartet in C minor Schubert String Quartet No.12 in C minor, D.703 Shostakovich String Quartet No.11 in F minor, Op.122 Tchaikovsky String Quartet No.2 in F, Op.22 The legendary Fitzwilliam String Quartet, now in its 50th year, makes a widely anticipated return to open our season, as it did to great acclaim in 2013/14. Thomas Erskine, who became the 6th Earl of Kellie, was an eminent musician in 18th century Scotland and his C minor quartet (one of six) is an impressive work, full of ‘Sturm und Drang’. Far better known is Schubert’s much-loved ‘Quartettsatz’, here with Brian Newbould’s completion of the Andante second movement. The Fitzwilliam has long championed the music of Shostakovich and this performance of his enigmatic 11th quartet (which they have played for the composer’s son Maxim) is sure to be compelling. The programme ends with Tchaikovsky’s generally dark but ultimately exultant second quartet. “The Fitzwilliam String Quartet, in my opinion, is, and has been for many years, Britain's premier string quartet…a flagship British ensemble that should be the pride of the nation.” (Fanfare)
Tuesday 1 October 2019 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Bach Ensemble of Edinburgh with Hannah Foster (flute) & John Cameron (piano) Bach Orchestral Suite No.2 in B minor, BWV1067 Vivaldi Concerto in A minor, Op.3, No.8 Vivaldi Concerto in D, Op.3, No.9 Vivaldi Concerto in A minor, Op.3, No.6 Handel Concerto Grosso in B flat, Op.6, No.7 Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.5 in D, BWV1050 The Bach Ensemble of Edinburgh brings together some of Scotland’s best-known string players to perform music of the great masters of the Baroque era. Its concerts in Edinburgh’s Canongate Kirk have been highlights of the city’s Festival over several years. Joining the string ensemble are one of Scotland’s foremost accompanists and continuo players, John Cameron and young Edinburgh flautist Hannah Foster. Hannah is making a welcome early return to Peebles, having been a star of last season’s Patron’s Concert. We will hear three string concertos from Vivaldi’s L’Estro Armonico set and one of Handel’s wonderful Opus 6 Concerti Grossi. Framing these are two iconic works by J.S. Bach, the second of his four Orchestral Suites and the fifth of his six Brandenburg Concertos, both featuring virtuosic writing for a solo flute.
Tuesday 5 November 2019 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Yu Kosuge (piano) Janáček In the Mists Beethoven Piano Sonata Op.31, No.2 (’Tempest’) Debussy Selections from Preludes, Book I Stravinsky Firebird and music by Daquin, Couperin & Rameau Yu Kosuge has become one of the world's most noted young pianists. She appears at the most important venues around the world, with critics praising her "acutely poetic sensibility, wit, drama, and lyricism". In 2017, she won the prestigious Suntory Music Award, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the development of Western music in Japan. In her ongoing ‘Four Elements’ project, Yu Kosuge explores how Water, Wind, Fire and Earth, in her words, “inspired composers' imaginations to create not only images or impressions but also works with profound metaphoric messages”. The programme she has chosen for us combines two of the elements, Wind and Fire, the latter represented by Stravinsky’s own stunning piano version of his ever- popular ballet, ‘The Firebird’. “Kosuge's interpretation was equal parts emotional and cerebral. Fleeting moments of crystalline textures and pastoral hues gave way to bold, tempestuous waves.” Washington Post
Tuesday 3 December 2019 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Trio Ecossaise Jennifer Brown (clarinet), Harriet Davidson (cello) Claire Haslin (piano) Louise Farrenc Trio in E flat, Op.44 Gwyneth Walker Craftsbury Trio Clara Schumann Trio in G minor, Op.17 Trio Ecossaise comprises three of Scotland’s finest chamber musicians who, in addition to their own busy careers, have enjoyed playing chamber music together for fifteen years. Their repertoire combines original works and arrangements, and both are represented in their programme for us, showcasing female composers. Louise Farrenc was a highly respected musician, teacher and composer in 19th century France (the only female professor at the Paris Conservatoire in that century), and her clarinet trio is a fine example of her individual voice. Gwyneth Walker is a prolific composer with over 350 works to her name. Her 1990 ‘Craftsbury Trio’ is an affectionate homage to a small town in her home state of Vermont. The final work needs little introduction, and it will be fascinating to compare this arrangement with the original piano trio that we heard in November 2018. “Holy Trinity Church was filled with wonderful music performed by the hugely talented Trio Ecossaise... the combination was sublime... a superb performance.” Crail Festival, 2017
Sunday 12 January 2020 2.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles James Gilchrist (tenor) & Anna Tilbrook (piano) Schubert Die schöne Müllerin Four years on from their heart-stopping performance of ‘Winterreise’, these supreme interpreters of Schubert’s great song cycles make an eagerly awaited return to Peebles. For this recital, the programme consists of the first of those cycles, ‘Die schöne Müllerin’ based, like Winterreise, on poems by Wilhelm Müller. Written when Schubert was only 26 (with a mere five years of his life remaining), it is considered one of his finest works. Unlike the later cycle, the atmosphere of which is gloomy from the very outset, the opening here is cheerful and carefree, but the mood descends into anguish and despair as the young protagonist, rejected by the miller’s beautiful daughter of the title, descends inexorably towards his tragic fate. This is music, and music-making, of the very highest order - you quite simply must not miss it! “Gilchrist and TiIlbrook prove themselves here amid distinguished competition with a beautifully realised and individual interpretation.” (Classical Music Magazine - review of Die schöne Müllerin)
Sunday 9 February 2020 2.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Patron’s Concert Gina McCormack (violin) & Nigel Clayton (piano) with students and recent graduates from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Young Musicians’ Showcase Our first ever Patron’s Concert was one of the great highlights of 2018/19. We are delighted that our Patron, Gina McCormack, will present another Young Musicians’ Showcase this season, for which she will again hand-pick some of the finest young musicians from Scotland’s excellent national conservatoire. Already lined up is a string quartet from the Broen Ensemble (pictured), led by Michelle Dierx, who made such an impact as a soloist in last season’s showcase. Check the website nearer the time for further details! Gina McCormack is one of the UK’s leading violinists. Since May 2019, she has been First Violin with the world-renowned Brodsky Quartet and is also a highly respected teacher, holding positions at both the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Royal Northern College of Music. With Gina will be her regular duo partner, Nigel Clayton who, in addition to his career as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician, is Professor of Piano at the Royal College of Music and Visiting Professor at the North East of Scotland Music School.
Tuesday 3 March 2020 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Florian Mitrea (piano) Beethoven Sonata No.8 in C min, Op.13 ('Pathétique') Beethoven Sonata No.21 in C, Op.53 ('Waldstein') Liszt Ballade no. 2 in B minor Liszt Piano Sonata in B minor British/Romanian pianist Florian Mitrea was a double prize winner at the 2017 Scottish International Piano Competition, adding to an already vast array of global competition successes. Having studied in Bucharest and at London’s Royal Academy, where he now teaches, Florian has given concerto performances, chamber music concerts and solo recitals across Europe and in Asia and the USA. In the first half of his recital for us, Florian marks the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with two of his best-loved sonatas, the early ‘Pathétique’ and the middle-period ‘Waldstein’, considered one of his greatest. The second half is given over to two virtuosic showpieces by Liszt: the Gothic horror inspired second Ballade and the remarkable, revolutionary Sonata. “...phenomenal technique and ravishing musical intelligence." (Cambridge Independent) “a super account of Liszt's B minor Sonata.” (Seen and Heard International)
Tuesday 31 March 2020 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Ugly Bug Ragtime Three John Burgess (clarinet), Ross Milligan (guitar and banjo) Andy Sharkey (bass) Jazz standards, rags and blues from the golden age of jazz Jazz concerts used to appear regularly in the Music in Peebles calendar and always proved very popular. For our ‘something completely different’ slot this season, we welcome the Ugly Bug Ragtime Three, comprising a trio of Scotland's finest jazzers. John Burgess has played on stages and in jazz clubs all over the world and features on over 100 recordings. Ross Milligan has appeared with, among many others, singer Ute Lemper and the BBCSO, and has written music for film and TV. Andy Sharkey toured with the hit show ‘Rat Pack’, appeared regularly with clarsach player Rachel Hair and is also a tutor at Strathclyde University. Describing themselves as “the wee band with the big, big sound”, the Ugly Bugs promise a wonderful mix of fine vintage ragtime jazz from the 1920s and ‘30s, all delivered with real drive, swing and verve. Romantic ballads rub shoulders with rags and stomps by Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller, and blues-drenched standards band up against swinging show tunes. A treat for the heart and feet in equal measure! “Great fun, and a classy, authentic act.” (Scotland on Sunday)
