QQI (FETAC) Accredited Courses Back To Education Initiative (BTEI) Courses Courses offered under this part-time programme lead to a national qualification, QQI (formerly FETAC). All BTEI courses are exempt from fees where applicants are in receipt of a social welfare payment, hold a medical card or did not complete a leaving certificate or equivalent. Otherwise the following fees apply; €75 (QQI level 3 & 4) or €150 (QQI level 5 & 6). PPS numbers must be submitted prior to starting a BTEI course. QQI ACCREDITED CLASSES CONTINUING FROM AUTUMN 2017 WILL COMMENCE WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 8TH JANUARY 2018 (continuing classes are not listed in this programme). PLEASE NOTE: All courses require a minimum number so therefore all classes must be booked and paid for before the course begins. Arts,Crafts & Design Furniture Making QQI level 5 5N1275 Monday 10am - 1pm / 26 weeks [start date 5th February] This course is geared towards students with previous experience. It will give plenty of opportunity to practice your skills and discover more during the design and creation of individual projects. Fee: €150 (concs. apply). Please refer to page 2 for info on fees. Painting QQI level 5 5N1302 Wednesday 10am - 1pm / 26 weeks [start date 7th February] In this class you will learn the knowledge, skill and competence to use a wide range of painting techniques and media and to foster creativity and self expression. All of the above in a fun inclusive, challenging yet supportive environment. Fee: €150 (concs. apply). Please refer to page 2 for info on fees. Collage Techniques QQI level 5 5N0761 Thursday 10am - 1pm / 26 weeks [start date 15th February] In this course we will take the design principles of collage and bring them to the 3D level. Our main project will be focussed around the idea of dio- ramas/shadowboxes created from a multitude of materials using previous woodworking skills in the creation of the layers and boxes. Creative Application Ceramics QQI level 6 6N3445 Friday 10am - 1pm / 26 weeks [start date 2nd March] The emphasis on this course will be ceramic surfaces and finishings. You will learn about slip work, glazing, painting and decorating ceramic. You will have the opportunity to learn to work on the potters wheel and explore free building techniques. Information Technology Bookkeeping - Manual & Computerised QQI level 5 5N1354 Wednesday 10am - 1pm / 26 weeks [start date 7th February] The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to produce and maintain accurate bookkeeping records for a range of organisations, using manual and computerised systems. Fee: €150 (concs. apply). Please refer to page 2 for info on fees. Word Processing QQI level 4 4N1123 Wednesday 2 - 4pm / 13 weeks [start date 7th February] Learners will improve on their skills in creating useful word documents such as letters, memos, forms and mail merge for envelopes and labels. Child care / Health care Food & Nutrition QQI level 4 4N2380 Day to be confirmed / 20 weeks The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to make informed choices about food and diet. First Aid Responder (previous title Occupational First Aid) PHECC Tuesday 7 - 10pm / 7 weeks [start date 6th February] Skills learnt include CPR, Defibrillation, managing choking, seizures/convul- sions, heart conditions, stroke, wounds & bleeding and much more which you may encounter at home and in the workplace. This course will include Cardiac 1st Responder Emergency training. Fee: €75 + €10 manual (conc. apply). Please refer to page 2 for info on fees. 4
Non-accredited short courses Community Education (CE) This programme aims to provide locally based education programmes that are responsive to the local community’s needs. PPS numbers must be submitted prior to starting a Community Educa- tion course. Adult Education (AE): Self-financing programmes covering a wide range of hobby, professional courses and workshops. PPS numbers must be submitted prior to start- ing a self-financing course. Adult Literacy and Basic Education (AL): Through this programme we can offer one-to-one confidential tuition in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. Short courses continued Arts,Crafts & Design The Art of Yoga (CE) Monday 10am - 12noon / 10 weeks [start date 5th February] Learn about yoga and also learn how painting can help you relax and open your mind. Start the week with a yoga session followed by a painting class and see where you imagination takes you too. Also learn how to relax. Pottery for House and Garden (AE) Monday 2 - 4pm / 6 weeks [start date 5th February] Create and design something for your home and garden in clay. The course is suitable for learners with or without experience. Fee: € 70 plus €20 mate- rial. Anja Gnauck Art & Design for the Active Retired (CE) Monday 2 - 4pm / 8 weeks [start date 5th February] Come along, enjoy and challenge your creative side! Suitable for all students at all levels. Work at your own pace. Woodwork for Fun (CE) Monday 7 - 9.30pm / 10 weeks [start date 5th February] Join a group, learn new skills, make some friends and create something both for your community and for yourself! Stained Glass for Beginners (AE) Tuesday 7.00 - 9.30pm / 4 weeks [start date 6th February] Learn the techniques of stained glass, copper foiling, cutting, and soldering to create beautiful glass objects for your home, lanterns, mirrors, mobiles and light catchers. Fee: €60. Róisín Ni Chionnfhaolaidh Learn how to Plan & Prepare an Exhibition (CE) Wednesday 2 - 4pm / 10 weeks [start date 7th February] Aimed primarily at local community groups who are interested in learning how to develop and plan exhibitions to promote their local heritage. Short courses continued Painting Doctor (AE) Wednesday 2 - 4pm / 8 weeks [start date 7th February] Bring your sick and wounded paintings and we will nurse them back to a healthier condition. This class is for everyone. There is no curriculum but Helen is happy to assist students create and achieve their own personal artistic goals. Fee: €90. Helen Richmond Mosaics for your House and Garden (CE) Thursday 2 - 5pm / 6 weeks [start date 8th February] Using broken crockery, mirrored mosaics, recycled glass, learn the art of Mosaic, learn design skills, glass cutting, application techniques and grout- ing. You will also have the opportunity during this class to participate on the mosaic sign for the exterior wall in Tech Amergin. Discover the Fascinating World of Human Bones (CE) Thursday 4.30 - 6.30pm / 6 weeks [start date 8th February] ‘Digging up bones’: discovering human skeletal remains from the archaeo- logical record. Create Sensory Tools & Garden Equipment at Cunamh House (CE) Thursday 1.30 - 4pm (30min tea break) / 10 weeks [start date 8th February] Join the team and enjoy working together with a group of young adults with special needs creating garden art and recycled projects from pallets, tyres etc. Tea break and fun included! Outreach programme. Knitting And Crochet (CE) Friday 10am - 12noon / 9 weeks [start date 9th February] This is a class for all levels and experience. Lots of projects can be attempted and it is a good way to improve your knowledge and experience in a relaxed and supportive setting. A wide selection of patterns and stitches can be learned. Fiddling with Fabric & Learn to Sew (CE) Friday 1 - 3pm / 9 weeks [start date 9th February] In this class you will learn about fabric and what you can do with it....cut, stitch, glue, paint, tear, fold, the list is endless. It is a class for people who want to unleash their creative ideas through the medium of fabric in a fun and innovative way. 7
Short courses continued Heritage / Craft Workshops (CE) Saturday 10am - 2pm / 4 weeks (last Saturday of every month, first class will start on 24th February) Each session will focus on one craft; spinning, weaving, felting and rug mak- ing! As a new/old craft embroidery will be introduced. Embroidery is a craft activity which is taking the international craft scene by storm recently. I.T. / Design Adobe Lightroom 6 (CE) Monday 7 – 9pm / 6 weeks [start date 5th February] Organise and edit your digital photos with Adobe Lightroom to create slide shows, photo books, prints etc… In this course you learn all the basic op- tions and settings for a good workflow. The new features like HDR photog- raphy and panorama photo will be covered in this class. Learn how to blog and design a website with Wordpress (CE) Saturday 17th February, 10th March, 31st March & 21st April 10am - 3pm / 4 weeks Learn how to use the easiest and most powerful blogging and website con- tent management system (or CMS) in existence today. Exercise / Self-improvement Creative Writing (AL) Monday 10.30am -12.30pm / 10 weeks [start date 5th February] Develop your creative writing skills on this course, which will cover imagery, metaphor, and observation in your personal writing. We may explore differ- ent mediums to develop your writing skills in several genres including fic- tion; poetry; life writing; and script writing for film, radio and stage. Lesley MacVean 8
Short courses continued Teacht le Cheile (CE) Tuesday 2 - 4pm / 10 weeks [start date 6th February] Fun class compromising creative movement and dance. After our fun session we are all ready for a cuppa which is the highlight of the afternoon. Popular class. Gentle Swish Ball Swish (AE) Tuesday 10.30 - 11.30am / 6 weeks [start date 6th February] Beginners exercise class with the support of your rotund partner ‘Swiss Ball’ to develop core strength, improve posture, flexibility, fitness. Would suit reasonably fit. Fee: €35. Lesley MacVean Pilates (AE) Tuesday 11.30am – 12.30pm / 6 weeks [start date 6th February] Moderate form of exercise that can improve balance, flexibility, circulation, posture and help you to relax. Pilates is similar to yoga but with a greater focus on strengthening the core abdominal and back muscles, which help keep the body balanced and are essential for providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breathing and alignment of the spine, head, neck and shoulder blades. It incorporates strengthening of the deep abdominal muscles, which are particularly important in alleviating and preventing back pain. Pilates is beneficial for just about everyone - re- gardless of age and fitness level. Fee: €35. Short courses continued CTMindfulness (AE) Tuesday 5 - 6pm / 8 weeks [start date 6th February] CTMindfulness is a very simple effective form of meditation. Learn body scanning and healthy breathing practices in a peaceful environment. ‘Focus your full attention on your breath as it flows in and out of your body, observe your thoughts as they arise in your mind, seemingly from thin air, and watch again as they disappear, like a soap bubble bursting.’ Come to the profound understanding that thoughts and feelings (including negative ones) are transient. They come and go, and ultimately, you have a choice about whether to act on them or not. Learn how to observe without criticism; be compassionate with yourself. When unhappiness or stress hover overhead, learn to treat them as if they were black clouds in the sky, and to observe them with friendly curiosity as they drift past. In essence, mindfulness allows you to catch negative thought patterns before they tip you into a downward spiral. It begins the process of putting you back in control of your life. Fee: €45.
