Message from The Chief Executive Hello everyone, Yes, it’s me, magically writing from my annual leave! I hope you are all well and staying safe? It’s worrying to hear about newer variants of Covid in the news a lot, but remember, this is what a virus does. It is expected that it will change, just like flu, so that’s why top-up vaccines will probably become part of our lives in the coming years. Meanwhile, let’s continue to stay safe and look after each other. (Message continues on page two)
1. Message from The Chief Executive continued In other news, Susan Westbury, Director of People, will be departing – but only for a while! We are currently recruiting a person to backfill Susan’s career break, so you will hear more about this soon. Busy times everywhere team, so please stay well and take your holidays! Mary Dr Mary Ryan Chief Executive 2. Farewell to our Executive Director of Nursing & Quality, Paul Kavanagh-Fields Paul Kavanagh-Fields, Executive Director of Nursing & Quality has left the organisation to pursue new opportunities. We would like to thank Paul for his service to the organisation since he joined us in October 2018. As you may be aware, Paul has been absent from work recently and Carol Rogers, Deputy Director of Nursing & Quality has been acting-up to cover Paul’s absence. This arrangement will continue at this present time. 3. Supporting staff to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme Healthcare in the UK has always benefited from committed, and talented health staff both trained here in Britain and those who have chosen to work here from abroad. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens form an integral and vital part of the health and care family, and your skills and compassionate care directly benefit patients, families and communities. There are 21 days left to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme, which is open to all EU, EEA and Swiss citizens in the UK until 30 June 2021. The Settlement Scheme will allow EU, EEA and Swiss citizens to continue to live and work in the UK beyond June 2021, meaning they will not need to apply for visas when the new immigration system takes effect. The scheme will also lock in the rights of EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, meaning they will be able to access healthcare, benefits and other government services in the same way they currently do, further details on what people will get from the scheme are available at https://tinyurl.com/88vyahkb
4. Support your local Healthwatch in Sefton with their Covid Survey Are you aged 18-30? Will you be taking up the offer of the Covid-19 vaccine? The covid-19 vaccine rollout is now reaching younger adults and in anticipation of younger residents being offered the covid-19 vaccine Healthwatch want to hear from them directly. The local independent watchdog, Healthwatch Sefton, has launched a short survey and wants to know whether 18 – 30-year old’s in Sefton will take up the covid-19 vaccine when offered. Please fill out this short survey or scan the QR code and please encourage as many young people as possible to share their views: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/HWS_18-30_Covid-19_survey 5. Medical student feedback – a note from Dr Jon Reynolds Over the last couple of months students from Edge Hill University Medical School have been observing various services within PC24. I have seen first-hand the warm welcome you have given these students and I would like to thank you all for this. In particular I have been sent a summary of the written feedback from the students who observed at our Asylum Medical Assessment Service (AMAS) at Birley Court. The feedback is overwhelmingly positive and is a reflection of the programme you put together and the welcome you gave. The values of PC24 (Care, Compassion, Dignity and Respect) are key to the care we offer in all of our services, but I have always seen healthcare for the asylum population as being the perfect expression of this. It is great to see that we can demonstrate these values to the upcoming medical workforce and hopefully influence the care they give patients in the future.

8. Introducing our new Clinical Lead, Dr Daniel Ellis Image: Dan with his family We’re delighted to share the news that Dr Dan Ellis has joined the Clinical Leads Team as Clinical Lead for the Sefton Area. Here’s a few words from Dan himself…. “I’ve worked for PC24 for around 8 years in various different roles. I’m originally from the Wirral and trained at Arrowe Park and the Royal. I moved to the midlands for a few years to train as a GP before seeing the light and coming back to Merseyside. I’ve worked in a variety of different practices in Liverpool and the Wirral but PC24 has always been a constant. I’m delighted to finally come on board full time and work as the clinical lead for our Sefton practices and hope to continue to support them the best I can. The support and welcome I've had from so many people at PC24 has been fantastic and I’d like to say a big thanks to all the new (and some old) faces I've met. Outside PC24 life I find myself slipping surprisingly easily into middle age, enjoying gardening, listening to podcasts and peace and quiet! I’m a big LFC fan and of watching Curb Your Enthusiasm.” We hope you enjoy your new role as Clinical Lead, your colleagues in Sefton will really appreciate your energy and support. 9. 12. The PC24 Playlist Three weeks ago, we announced that we were compiling a list of your favourite 7 songs to upload onto Spotify that will form the PC24 soundtrack. Our CEO, Dr Mary Ryan, got the party started and submitted her tunes which have been added to the playlist here. So, to remind you all, each week we want one of you to submit your 7 special songs, why you chose them and your favourite so that you can tune in and turn off from the world, briefly. Please send your sounds to the communications team (communications@pc24.nhs.uk). This week it’s the turn of Dr Jon Reynolds, GP and Clinical Lead for Liverpool, to share his sounds. Over to you Jon! “This has not been the easiest, with nearly 50 years of listening there are so many……but here goes. 1. The Police-Message in a bottle. The first song on the first album I bought (Reggatta De Blanc). 2. The Pixies-Down to the Well. The first Pixies track I ever heard and it was as a John Peel session recording in 1989. John Peel was essential listening if you wanted to hear new bands from around the world (no Spotify in those days!!). I’m pleased some of my early musical tastes have been passed down to my children. 3. The Smiths-Meat is Murder. Being vegetarian in the 1980s wasn’t very common but this track said it all. 4. Lou Reed-Perfect Day. This should have been the track for the first dance at our wedding, however, the DJ didn’t have it and neither of us can remember what was played instead.
12. The PC24 Playlist 5. Placebo (& David Bowie)-Without you I’m Nothing. A song that always brings be back to my children being born. The version with Bowie lets me add another of my favourite artists to this list. 6. Faithless-Mass Destruction. Memories of summer car journeys as a family in the mid-2000s. Our children started early with awareness of social injustice-‘inaction is a weapon of mass destruction’, ‘greed is a weapon of mass destruction’- google the lyrics, it will make you think. 7. U2-Helter Skelter. I really wanted to include a U2 track. I just remember playing it loud in my bedroom as a teenager. I could have included The Beatles or Siouxsie and the Banshees versions (sorry, another way of getting other artists mentioned in this list).” Thanks for sharing Jon. We look forward to hearing more top tunes from our colleagues next week. 13. Sixty Second snapshot with Claire Linnane! Each week we give one of our colleagues sixty seconds to answer as many questions as possible and share some of their interests and reflect on life outside of "the office/practice”. This week we have sixty seconds with our Service Manager for Sefton, Claire Linnane. Claire, your 60 seconds starts now! Q: How long have you worked at PC24? A: Only 3 months, feels so much longer already! Q: What’s the best part of your job? A: I’m not sure there is one; I’m only joking it has certainly been meeting lots of pleasant and helpful new staff which always makes settling into a new job easier . Q: What did you want to be when you were small? A: A police officer, I was actually successful in my application but then fell pregnant with my now 18-year-old son so that then changed my career path. Q: Where’s the best place that you’ve ever visited? A: I have two India and Las Vegas, both very different places but I can’t wait to go back to both. Q: What's the most daring thing you've ever done? A: A parachute jump as I am scared of heights, once I was out of the aeroplane, I loved it.
13. Sixty Second snapshot with Claire Linnane! Q: What’s your favourite hobby or interest? A: Playing & watching Netball. I coached a children’s team and managed a ladies team until I recently had to retire due to me having a hip replacement. Q: What was your first concert you went to or band that you saw? A: Take That as a child. Q: If you could learn to do anything new, what would it be? A: I would love to learn to crochet when my spare time allows, although I don’t have much of that at the moment, I will definitely take this up in future years. Q: What's your favourite food? A: I love Mexican and Indian food. Q: If you cook, what’s your signature dish? A: Anyone who knows me knows I don’t cook, I’m fortunate to have a lovely partner who does this for me . Q: Have you ever had a nickname? What is it? A: I was nicknamed Smiler by my Netball team. Q: What did you miss the most in lockdown and what are you most looking forward to when life is relatively back to normal…hopefully from the end of this month! A: I missed seeing my family and friends and going out socialising. I am most looking forward to hopefully a long overdue holiday after a stressful year. Q: Did you learn anything new during the pandemic, or maybe learning something new about yourself? A: I advanced in technology with all these virtual meetings, I also learnt to be super resilient managing a GP practice during the COVID19 pandemic. Thanks so much for taking part Claire! That’s all for this week everyone. Please remember, if you have anything you would like to share with your colleagues next Wednesday, please do get in touch before Tuesday.
