Academic Gowns and Hoods
The doctoral gown has bell sleeves with velvet trim. It is more commonly black, but it can be the color of the academic discipline or of
the University where it has been granted. Doctoral hoods are black. The color of the velvet represents the discipline to which the degree
pertains, e.g., Arts, White; Business, Drab; Education, Light Blue; Law, Purple; Nursing, Apricot; Philosophy, Dark Blue; Science, Golden
Yellow; Social Work, Citron. All hoods are lined with the official colors of the school conferring the degree. The traditional academic cap is
the mortarboard, though the tam and the Elizabethan will be seen on some of the faculty. The tassel is most often black, doctoral recipients
frequently wear gold, and lawyers wear purple.
The names appearing in the commencement program are based on information received by the registrar at the time the publication went to
press. The permanent record card kept in the registrar’s office for each student will certify the award of degree and carry the student’s grades,
which consist of the student’s average for six semesters.You can also read
