Piccadilly Olde Time Music Hall
Morning Showcase
When Tuesday 12 May, 11am
Cost Tickets $25*
Music Halls provided the working class with inexpensive
entertainment. In time, intellectuals and the upper classes –
particularly members of the British royal family – took a liking
to these unpretentious variety shows. The music halls gave
the British public a solid tradition of popular musical theatre,
and stage stars Vesta Tilley and Gracie Fields, as well as film
legends Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin, got their start in the
music halls. Music halls went into a gradual decline after the
introduction of talking films, but the British never did let a
good habit die easily… and the best music hall songs are still
sung in the pubs of London.
