Celebration of the Eucharist Celebrazione dell’Eucarista His Eminence Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York Celebrant FORTY-THIRD ANNUAL COLUMBUS DAY MASS St. Patrick’s Cathedral “America’s Parish Church” New York City October 12, 2020 9:30 a.m. 1
O ffice of the Cardinal 1011 F i r s t A v e n u e N e w Yo r k , NY 10 022 October 12, 2020 Month of the Holy Rosary My dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Welcome to the forty-third, annual Columbus Day Mass! How blessed it is today for us to join together once again in the gothic masterpiece that is Saint Patrick’s Cathedral! We gather to celebrate the Eucharist in honor of the millions of Italian immigrant men, women and children, who came to America in search of the unique opportunities we share as a proud nation. Today, with warm hearts and grateful sentiments, we remember and give thanks for the extraordinary courage of the ordinary men, women and children who bravely took a chance, left everything they had in Italy, and made a life for themselves, beyond their dreams, in this City of Immigrants! And they were reassured again and again by the comforting presence of God they knew within themselves and in his Church. Bravi! This year, in the face of the frightening Coronavirus and genuine social unrest, we must expand our vision and use the pride in our heritage and Faith to more intentionally reach out beyond our comfort zone to show respect to our needy neighbors, that is, anyone who is “near.” Many do not share our cultural heritage or religious traditions ... but they are our “relatives,” in a real sense, because they are sons and daughters of the same Father in heaven. Precisely because of our rich heritage, we must readily assist and defend the vulnerable. Remember, it was for this common sense of justice and mercy that our forefathers came to America, and it is still what a self-sacrificing God expects! This is what we Christians do! Please know how privileged I feel, standing with you at the altar of our Lord and Savior today! Saluting you and your loved ones, I am, Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York
O ffice of the Cardinal 1011 F i r s t A v e n u e N e w Yo r k , NY 10 022 12 ottobre, 2020 Mese del Santo Rosario Cari Fratelli e Sorelle in Cristo, Benvenuti alla quarantatreesima messa annuale del Columbus Day! Salutando voi e i vostri cari, mi confermo, Fedelmente in Cristo, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Arcivescovo di New York

RESPONSORIAL PSALM SALMO RESPONSORIALE Psalm 145 | Howard L. Hughes ACCLAMATION BEFORE THE GOSPEL CANTO AL VANGELO Alleluia | Michele Bonfitto GOSPEL VANGELO Deacon Antonio Mammoliti A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark. Mark 4: 35-41 On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples: “Let us cross to the other side.” Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in the boat just as he was. And other boats were with him. A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” They were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?” The Gospel of the Lord. 6
