People have a tendency to become like those they love and admire. If someone holds Our Lord in high esteem, they are likely to be motivated by his words which we heard today, ‘If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink just because you belong to Christ, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward. The famous Catholic convert GK Chesterton famously said no one would say to a man-eating crocodile, “be a crocodile” because it is in the nature of a crocodile to kill and maim without any consideration for the harm they cause. A crocodile cannot help but be a killer and destroyer of life, a crocodile cannot decide to remodel its behaviour. People can! People make choices, and people’s actions are the result of their mindset and attitudes towards others. St Teresa of Calcutta treated the poorest of the poor with exceptional dignity because she saw in everyone the person of Christ. Our Lord gave the warning, “But anyone who is an obstacle to bring down these little ones who have faith, would be better thrown into the sea with a great millstone around their neck, to drive home the point that everyone is a son or daughter of God. Our Lord also said, if your hand should cause you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life crippled, than to have two hands and go into the fire that cannot be put out. Our Lord of course was not speaking literally. Our Lord in a powerful way was warning people not to be guided by their impulses but by Faith. A Faith which holds that each and every person is a son or daughter of God and deserves to be treated with the utmost respect and helped. Thoughts can be a powerful force for good and bad. Allowing one inappropriate thought to become part of your life can have devastating consequences both for yourself and others. The infamous serial killer Ted Bundy just before he was executed requested that he be allowed to speak about the dangers of pornography. In his interview he accepted the fact that he was responsible for his crimes but insisted that he and many other offenders on death row were motivated and inspired by inappropriate material. Ted Bundy wanted to warn others about the danger of looking at inappropriate material. He wanted to warn men that going down the path of considering other people as mere objects could have dangerous consequences. One consequence is that they can feel powerless to stop, to turn back. Faith tells us that is wrong, and the gift of grace not only makes is possible, but also to experience the words of Our Lord, “My yoke is easy and my burden light.” Ted Bundy famously said in an interview “The force would just consume me,” I didn’t want to follow her. I didn’t do anything but follow her and that’s how it was. On the other hand how many people have been saved from going down a path in which they could have terribly used and abused other people because they were both inspired and warned by Our Lord’s words? This Sunday is social justice Sunday. World history is full of examples of people who have been inspired with the best of intentions but ended up doing the most terrible things to their brothers and sisters. We need more than good intentions! To keep us on the safe and narrow we need the reference point of Our Lord’s words warning us to treat other people with respect and to remove from our hearts and minds any ideas and attitudes which can lead to people to abuse and use others. We need to be aware that at times there can be inappropriate ideas and thoughts raging through our hearts and minds. We need to be aware that as long
as we do not deliberately bring them to mind, keep them there, or take pleasure in them we have done no wrong. We need to keep our focus, have as our reference point, God. The moment St Peter took his eyes off Our Lord and focused on the waves and wind he began to sink. On this Social Justice Sunday Jesus wants to look at him, at others and outwards. Consider the joy St Mary MacKillop and St Teresa of Calcutta had in their hearts because they were inspired by Christ and the joy they brought to others. Our Lord knows people better than they know themselves. He knows that we find ourselves by making a sincere gift of ourselves to one another. What the world needs most of all are people who are inspired by and animated by the love of God. Father Darren Howie Parish Priest St. Joseph’s Wonthaggi 26th September, 2021
