Find out more about her on girlaboutyorkshire.com. My eyes darted back and forth as I stood on the edge of the most easterly point in North America. Scanning the North Atlantic Ocean with anticipation – eager to see a glimpse of a humpback whale breaching. And then all of a sudden, there it was, a spurt of air and water, and then a long shiny black spine slicing up the water and immersing itself back under the black of the ocean. The immensity and power and the incredible noise it made as it sprayed water from its blowhole. There it was… my first humpback whale encounter just ten minutes outside the city of St. John’s at Cape Spear. 4 COLOUR : A DESTINATION REVEALED

Perched on the steep slopes of a small harbour with a rainbow of colourful wooden Victorian-era houses known as jellybean row lining the steep streets, my first observation was that this Canadian city on the Island of Newfoundland on Canada’s East Coast has all the makings of a miniature San Francisco. With a population of a little over 100,000, St. John’s is more small town than big city. But then visitors don’t come here to indulge their love of shopping Hill in huge department stores or to Signal be dazzled by bright lights and towering skyscrapers. My St. John’s Coastal hiking is superb. The world- class East Coast Trail stretches 265km north and south of the city. The 9km path between Cape Spear and Maddox Cove near Petty Harbour is a beautiful return day hike (18km in total) from St. John’s and it got me back to my hotel in St. John’s with plenty of time to freshen up before another fab meal. I think it’s safe to say that there are very few cities so close to the UK where a short break can include such a multiplicity of encounters and experiences – maybe only Reykjavik? Then maybe St. John’s is the new Reykjavik? Just without the extortionate price tags. There are not that many places less than a five-hour flight away from the UK that have captured my heart like St. John’s. FAST FACTS CONDÉ “HAPPN I ASTE: DESTIN E ST A #1 Joy I T IO N ndex.S. 2017!” STORYTELLERS AT HEART Wit, laughter and the art of embellishment. Have you ever had the experience Performer of meeting Sheila Williams someone and Entertainer-Comedian- feeling as if they CLO (Chief Laugh Officer) are really seeing you? A familiarity that is unexplained? Welcome to Newfoundland, a land where people listen and engage. We listen because we want to learn, to know who you are, to hear about how life is “from away.” Once we have gotten to know you a bit, we will want to share our story, inevitably embellishing it with a fair bit of humour. Storytelling is a part of the fibre of Newfoundlanders, woven into our being since we first settled in 1497. It was born out of necessity, due to geography, the isolation of communities in winter and the lack of other entertainment means. Telling a funny story with sharp wit, a wink, a nod and a teasing grin is our specialty, our way of eliciting a laugh, and a surefire way of lifting spirits. People love to laugh. We strive to make our stories as entertaining as possible, and give all we can with the most open and generous of hearts. It is this generosity that has endeared thousands of people “from away” to Newfoundland; the people, the hospitality, the fun. 14 COLOUR : A DESTINATION REVEALED

PLAYING HOST FOR 500 YEARS This destination drives attendance. In March of 2017 St. John’s proved that it is the little engine that could, and it pulled off a very successful Tim Hortons Brier. In fact, with 122,592 tickets sold, this was the 20th largest Brier in its 90 year history! We thought we would share some of the top reasons why it was such a success. Talk to us about how we can also help make your event a memorable one. 1. Who are we? STEP St. John’s (Sport Tourism Event Partnership) is the lead advocate for growing sport and event tourism in the St. John’s region. Winning the rights to host the Tim Hortons Brier was a key objective for 2017, and everyone was on board including funding partners, hometown celebrities, media, local businesses, the curling community and the general public. 2. Crowd sourcing. The community rallied behind the bid, supporting a very successful bid deposit campaign that generated 2,158 full event pass deposits which in total would generate over $1M in ticket sales prior to winning the bid. This also put pressure on the competition to match our accomplishments – a tactic that has since been replicated across the country as a best practice. 3. Our sport community champions events. You don’t always need to do a pre-ticket sale, but you do need to gauge the interest of your sport community. The enthusiasm in Newfoundland and Labrador further solidified to funding partners that getting behind this event was indeed a solid investment. It takes a village and this was exemplified by our 520 volunteers who contributed 12,400 hours and helped make it a top-notch event. 22 COLOUR : A DESTINATION REVEALED
