CONNECT. INSPIRE. ENRICH. FROM THE DIRECTOR In October there are many things to celebrate including Hispanic Heritage Month, Italian-American Heritage Month and Family History Month. We hope you will join us in these celebrations by participating in the virtual activities that are being offered. Our staff are reveling in the changing of the season with a plethora of fall activities. You will feel the chill in the air and the leaves falling when you attend our crafting events for all ages and storytimes that glorify the season. Halloween activities also abound with spooky crafts, virtual costume parties, book discussions, ghostly tales, mysterious trivia and more. Mark your calendar so you don’t miss out on any of these autumnal events. It is never too soon to prepare for college and your future career. Preparing for College Going to college is a big step for students and families alike. Often students have no idea what to expect or how to proceed. Help from guidance counselors, friends, family and classmates is invaluable. The Library has a number of resources available to help you navigate this path whether you are the parent or the student. The activities we offer are just the tip of the iceberg, but they will help you understand the process. You can also find online resources that will help you determine your career path. Career Transitions helps you assess your career interests. The assessment asks you a series of questions and in just a few minutes you can see whether your interests are in the arts, science or technology, administrative or business, caregiving or investigatory and others. Based on your answers you will also see a list of possible jobs and pay ranges for you to explore. Knowing where your interests are will save you a lot of time and money. You can access Career Transitions from www.pbclibrary.org and click on online research. Learning Express is another helpful online tool that offers career information, as well as college test preparation for the SAT, ACT, AP Exams and more. There is also a section to help you write your admission essay. The Library also partners with Achieve Palm Beach County, whose mission is to ensure that all children in Palm Beach County have equitable access to a post-secondary education. Their website www.achievepbc.org has resources for students, families and the community. There are checklists to help middle and high-school students, as well as a checklist for parents during the college years. The earlier you start preparing for college, the better off you will be. October is ... Family History Month The popularity of DNA sequencing to research your heritage has driven an increase in the number of people who are researching their family history. In 2002, the U.S. Congress designated October as “Family History Month” to acknowledge people’s desire to research their family heritage and to recognize that “within our Nation’s libraries and archives lie the treasured records that detail the history of our Nation, our states, our communities, and our citizens.” Genealogy continues to be one of the most popular hobbies, and libraries all over the world continue to provide the skills and resources people need to explore their family history. The Palm Beach County Library System has a number of research tools available to help you find out more about your family’s history. You can access these resources at www.pbclibrary.org. Ancestry Library Edition provides access to Census data, searches of vital, military and immigration records. You can also find City Directories, Obituaries, legal documents including wills, tax and land documents. This resource offers robust access to your family history. Heritage Quest is another online resource that has more than 4.4 billion records with coverage dating back to the 1700s to help you find your ancestors and discover the places in their past. It has Census data and family histories, compiled genealogies, church records, Freedman Bank registers and much more. If you need assistance using these resources, contact your local branch and request a Book-A-Librarian session with one of our librarians. They can help you use these services to find out more about your family. The Palm Beach County Genealogy Society Library is located in the Main Library and they are currently accepting appointments call 561-616-3455 to schedule. They are also hosting Genealogy Monthly Meet-up on Sat, Oct 09 at 1:30 pm via Zoom. To attend register at www.pbclibrary.org. Children can get in on family history too! Family History!
