Candidate Profiles Georgina Downer Liberals O n 18 May, voters in Mayo will join their fellow Australians to choose their government for the next three years. Voting isn’t simply a democratic right. It’s a democratic responsibility. It’s important that we exercise it by considering not only what’s best for us, but for our community and our nation. Mayo is my community and my home. I’m standing for election as a member of the Liberal team because I know our electorate, and our country, will be better off under a re-elected Coalition Government with a strong record of successful economic management which has delivered great outcomes for Mayo. I’m a mother of two who cares deeply about the future we’re creating for our children. I’ve got experience in law, diplomacy and public policy, working to help create a better a future. I want to give back to the community I have always called home, and that’s why I’m working hard to earn your support. I’m standing as part of a team whose successful management of the economy is delivering a Budget surplus for first time in years, more than $150 billion in personal income tax relief for 94% of Australians, investing $100 billion in roads and other infrastructure, providing record funding for health, education and aged care, guaranteeing Medicare, keeping Australians safe, and securing our borders. Our community and our country cannot risk the election of a Labor government and its $387 billion in new taxes. Our economy can’t afford Bill Shorten’s higher taxes on retirees, housing, income, investments, family businesses and cars. A vote for any other candidate in Mayo only helps Bill Shorten and Labor. I have a vision for Mayo. It’s been informed by thousands of conversations and meetings with residents, businesses, local governments and community groups, and it relies on a strong economy managed by a re-elected Coalition Government. My vision includes increasing the availability of vital services such as public transport, upgrading our local hospitals and other health services (especially mental health), reducing the cost of living and doing business, and ensuring quality care for older and disabled Australians. It includes stronger support for key industries in Mayo like agriculture and tourism. My vision includes caring for our coasts, supporting local initiatives addressing climate change along with Australia being part of meaningful global efforts to reduce emissions, protection of our natural heritage and delivering a Basin Plan which ensures the health of the River Murray. And it includes smart infrastructure investments to bust congestion, create jobs and trade for local businesses, deliver reliable and effective broadband and mobile communications, and create healthier and safer communities. An example is my advocacy for Federal investment in safer intersections as part of the duplication of Main South Road. My vision is never going to be complete, nor should it. It will evolve and develop because it’s primarily about always working with the people of Mayo to make our community a better place. It’s not just my vision; it’s your vision too. Anne Bourne The Greens H ello, I’m Anne Bourne, the Greens Candidate for Mayo. I live in Goolwa and am self- employed there as a psychologist. I am a single parent and proud grandmother. I have worked for over 45 years in community services and health in various capacities – as a psychologist, counsellor, community development worker, and in management, social and health policy development, research, quality assurance, project management, occupational health and safety, equal opportunity and adult education. I have worked with children, adolescents and adults; survivors of violence and abuse, homeless people, refugees and asylum seekers, older people, children in foster care, indigenous communities, the gay and lesbian community, and people living with HIV and Hepatitis C. Why vote for me? Because I have integrity, honesty and respect for all. I have the ability to think carefully about complex and long term solutions to problems we are facing right now, and into the future. A vote for me and The Greens is a vote for all Australians. It is a vote for economic and environmental sustainability, for peace and non-violence, for justice and fairness for all, and for the importance of all citizens being able to meaningfully engage in the democratic process. Only the Greens have a comprehensive plan to tackle climate change; to establish a renewable economy, to create new jobs, and to support workers and communities to transition from fossil fuel industries to cheaper and reliable energy. I am standing for The Greens because they are the party that has compelled the major parties to listen and respond to issues such as climate change, marriage equality, the Banking Royal Commission, the Disability Royal Commission, and a national anti-corruption ICAC. The major parties are still failing to address the big issues: growing economic and social inequality, increasing costs, decreased housing affordability, ecological devastation of the Murray Darling Basin and endangered species, and accompanying impacts on agriculture, rural communities, our food and water supplies. I want Australia to meet its responsibilities as a global citizen, and be respected for leadership in human rights. I want a country that is visionary and innovative, seeking practical and inclusive solutions to challenges we face, based on solid research and science applied with compassion and concern for all Australians I am ready to represent you in Canberra. Helen Dowland Animal Justice Party H elen was born in Sydney and lived there until she was 7 when her parents decided they would move to Adelaide and Helen has lived in Adelaide ever since. She spent a year in the US as an exchange student in an iconic part of the 60s. Helen discovered the AJP by chance in early 2018 and has been a member ever since. She was absolutely thrilled to find there’s a political party actually working for animals and she’s learnt so much from the AJP. Helen volunteered in the SA state election last year, and has been an active member of the AJP Media Group for a year. She is very proud to stand as a candidate for the AJP as it is a wonderful example of what a political party really should be. Helen will do everything she can to work for it and help and promote it in every way possible. Helen has a BSc (1969) in Physics and Maths from Flinders University, and a Dip Ed (1988) from Adelaide University. Helen mostly worked as a Senior Research Officer, first leading a science research team at the University of Adelaide for over 20 years. Then at the SA Police Department where she gained experience in a wider range of issues including legal work, demography and women’s issues. Like the police department, a political party is involved across the full range of issues of its citizens. Helen feels she can offer that versatility, and has a very strong vocation to help animals. *Taken from the Animal Justice Party website Michael Cane United Australia Party U nited Australia Party stands for and is committed in its efforts and vision to carry out the following functions: Party Officials should not be Lobbyists, thereby taking a strong position on Paid Political Lobbyists, saving tax payers dollars and introducing Fair Policies Revising the current Australian Government’s Refugee Policy to ensure Australia is protected and refugees are given opportunities for a better future and lifestyle Creating Mineral Wealth to continuously contribute to the welfare of the Australian community. This will be achieved by utilising mineral resources from Queensland and Western Australia, and incentives from the Commonwealth of Australia to establish downstream processing in the States of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia; and exporting products at a higher dollar value, thereby creating more revenue, jobs, tax and more facilities. Establishing a System where people create wealth in various parts of the country and for that wealth to flow back to the Community that generates the wealth. For example, if a particular region creates wealth, a significant percentage of that wealth should go back to the region. *From the United Australia Party website Aldinga Bay’s Coastal Views Page 9 May 2019 www.abra.org.au
Saskia Gerhardy Labor I have been lucky enough to have grown up throughout the region of Mayo. My family has lived on the Fleurieu Coast for all my life and I have grown up enjoying this lovely community we live in. It is a wonderful region, and I feel so lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful landscapes, the food and of course the community. Since my early teens I have been an active member of the community, participating in numerous action groups. I have been involved in developing and implementing youth groups as the Project Officer of the Willunga Environment Centre and have worked as an SSO at the Willunga Primary School. I studied Biodiversity at Flinders University and have recently completed my honours at Adelaide University. My biggest passions are youth and the environment. I have placed a strong focus on working alongside the region’s youth, having been appointed as the coordinator of the Willunga Trees for Life group, as well as recently becoming the inaugural Young Landcare Ambassador. A role which promotes engagement with young people and their environmental projects. I have been excited to work with a Labor team that is taking real action on climate change and bring power prices down. As an environmental educator, this is an issue that I am personally passionate about. I believe South Australia, as a renewable energy leader, will reap great rewards from Labor’s policies for cheaper, greener power and electric vehicles. Furthermore, Labor aims to reduce Australia’s pollution by 45 per cent by 2030 and net zero pollution by 2050. Importantly for South Australian's, Labor will ensure the Murray-Darling basin plan is delivered in full. By lifting the arbitrary cap on buybacks and reversing the State Liberal government’s capitulation to the upstream States, Labor will maintain the health of the Murray for future generations. All along the Murray River in our State, communities and the environment have been suffering due to inaction and the decisions of upstream politicians. Local farmers, business owners and residents have been continually disappointed by a lack of policies aimed to tackle climate change or to get our River Murray flowing again. Of course, we are also committed to ensure every worker gets a living wage and restore penalty rates to 130,000 South Australians whose take-home pay has been cut. Tax cuts under Labor will give more to those on low incomes who needs it most. Being a young person myself, I know how important these penalty rates are to young people and the rest of the community. Labor is the only party that is committed to making Medicare work for us all. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer, and Labor’s $2.3 billion plan to tackle cancer will help patients focus on getting better without having to worry about how to pay for it. There will thousands of residents of Mayo who will benefit from this policy. Whether it is at a local fair, door-knocking or on the phone, I look forward to talking about the issues with you in the weeks to come. Aldinga Bay’s Coastal Views Page 10 May 2019 www.abra.org.au
Rebekha Sharkie Centre Alliance M y name is Rebekha Sharkie and for the past three years I have had the privilege of being your Federal Member for Mayo. I put my hand up to stand for the electorate of Mayo in 2016 because I was tired of seeing our region being taken for granted as a ‘safe blue ribbon seat’ and I decided to be the change I wanted to see in our community. I am a member of Centre Alliance (formerly the Nick Xenophon Team). We sit the middle of politics, between the two major parties, taking a sensible, evidence- based approach to public policy. Since winning office I have worked hard to make Mayo matter, standing up to the Government when it comes to greater protections for the River Murray, the need for Banking Royal Commission and the phasing out of long-haul sheep exports. But I have also worked with the Government to deliver better outcomes for our community including: • A Medicare Service Centre for the South Coast • $20M for drug rehabilitation in SA, including Mayo • A Medicare rebatable MRI service in Mount Barker • 24-hour Dr and renal dialysis at Mount Barker Hospital • $3M for youth mental health services in Mayo • Returning $4.6M to Mayo councils for local roads • Securing an extra $424M for SA schools under Gonski reforms • $60M for apprenticeship mentoring • $50M for Advanced Manufacturing Fund • An energy assistance payment for pensioners I have introduced a satellite office at Victor Harbor so our community on the Fleurieu and South Coast can access face-to-face electorate office support without travelling to the Hills. I am advocating for more reliable telecommunications, more spending on roads and public infrastructure, better public transport options, improved dental and health services, a Federal Anti- Corruption Commission, an independent and adequately resourced ABC, transparency of aged care staffing ratios, more Home Care Packages, an independent agency to set the age pension and stronger policies on climate action. Centre Alliance is opposed to Labor’s policies on franking credits. We don’t support retrospective legislation and we believe Australians have made long-term financial decisions based on the policies of the day. I always put our community first by being an independent voice in Canberra. Finally, we have so much to achieve together so I am asking for your vote so we can continue to make Mayo Matter. Myponga Reservoir Reserve Open Day I n the first stage of its opening, visitors are able to walk, run, cycle, bird watch, picnic and visit lookout platforms. Opportunities for other activities, including shore- based fishing will be explored in the future. The opening of Myponga Reservoir Reserve has affirmed the State Government’s commitment to opening reservoirs for recreation across the state. Myponga Reservoir is now open between 7.30 am and 5.00 pm for visitors to walk, run and cycle around bushland tracks with water views, enjoy picnics, and visit lookouts and viewing platforms to see and photograph wildlife and scenic vistas. Additional new recreational access opportunities will be made available at other reservoir reserves around the state, including South Para where 180,000 fingerlings have been released. A cross-government taskforce has been ensuring every aspect from roads and infrastructure, through to tourism, is carefully considered and factored into the planning. Protecting the health and quality of drinking water supplies is the first priority, and this is informing the types of activities being enabled, which will vary from site to site based on their individual characteristics like water volume, visitor facilities and the water treatment infrastructure. Mayday - Mayday An international radio distress signal used especially by ships and aircraft. It got its start as an international distress call in 1923 but was not made official until 1948. It was the idea of Frederick Mockford, who was a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London. He came up with the idea for “mayday" because it sounded like the French word m'aider, which means “help me. Aldinga Bay’s Coastal Views Page 12 May 2019 www.abra.org.au
The Aldinga Community Shed T he Aldinga Community Shed (The Shed) is celebrating 10 years of service after officially opening its doors 7 May 2009. The need for a community shed was identified by a group of local men who recognised that a venue was required where men dealing with life changing circumstances such as retirement, semi-retirement, unemployment or incapacitation could meet. The Shed was built after years of fundraising supported by grants from all levels of government. The Shed offers a variety of activities which include carpentry, wood carving, wood turning, pottery and other crafts and is available to community members of all backgrounds, abilities, age and gender. All programs are supported by experienced volunteers who are willing to share their skills and knowledge. The Aldinga Community Shed is located on Stewart Avenue, Aldinga Beach. On This Day Observed as May Day, a holiday and spring festival since ancient times, also 1 May observed in socialist countries as a workers' holiday or Labor Day Great Britain was formed from a union between England and Scotland.
