Spotlight con’t IOWA STATE FAIR SKILL-A-THON Iowa State University Extension and Outreach held three skill-a-thons at the Iowa State Fair this year, with 188 youth from 48 Iowa counties participating. Skill-a-thons were held for goat, sheep and swine. Each skill-a-thon team was comprised of three individuals and included five stations where youth worked together to solve problems and identify goat, swine or sheep production components. Participants identified feed samples, breeds and meat cuts while also answering questions about genetics, nutrients, quality assurance, handling and biosecurity. Congrats Brayden Weldon, Taylor Brown and Bridget Johnson for their 4th place finish. IOWA STATE FAIR SKILL-A-THON The 4-H hotshots were celebrating a lot of awards at our last meeting. We are also excited about the upcoming summer postal. On Saturday, May 12 , we had a great meeting full of awards and th achievements. We first announced the people who received awards for passing a basic archery discipline course at the last meeting. They include: Evan Foster, Reece Creighton, Ryder Harris, Joshua LeCroy, Owen Kirby, Sam Wetzler, Andrew LeCroy, Tayden VanPelt, Micah Stephany, Isaih Born, and Theron Luett. There were others that fin- ished this basic archery course, but were not present at the meeting. The second round of awards that were given out included an award that came from the past season's postal. Gabe Hintzsche received third place in his discipline and received a certifi- cate and a medal for this accomplishment. The third and final announcement/award was that the 4-H Hot Shots will be sending two representatives to the National Meet. These include Micah Stephany and Gabe Hintzsche. Micah will be performing in the decline of wildlife skills and Gabe will be performing in the discipline of rifle. At our meeting, both Gabe and Micah received checks for $250 to go towards their trip. Congratulations to all of the 4-H members. Postals are when we get to participate in a county shooting tournament for shotgun, archery, and rifle. It takes place from May to September. Registering for postals will close on July 31st. Participants will be able to shoot their rounds when and where their meetings take place, so traveling will be kept to a minimal. We are excited to take part in these events again. - Emma Schnurstein, Reporter 6

RECORD BOOKS Record keeping is an important part of 4-H (and life) because records track your projects and growth over the span of several years. Remember, Record Keeping in Polk County has been revamped! The rubrics are by class: Junior, Interme- diate and Senior, and we allow digital record books! To discover the new rubrics and view an orientation presentation, visit the Polk County Record Keeping website: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/polk/page/4-h-recordkeeping Contact Marci Vinsand for further information regarding record keeping. RECORD BOOKS FOR AWARDS The leaders of each club should submit the recordkeeping they feel is best qualified for county awards. If youth score 85% or higher on their rubric, leaders should consider sending the youth’s record book, as each judge scores differently and a 90% is an award at the county level. We ask that we receive them by October 1, 2018. 7
