eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Why Apartment in Prague? Prague in top 5 tourist destinations in Europe Prague’s continued popularity was recently confirmed by a recent study by the Prague Information Service (www.welcomeprague.cz) , which ranks the Czech capital among the top 5 most successful tourist destinations in Europe. In a list of the most dynamic capitals in 2010, Prague comes an impressive fourth, after London, Paris and Rome, in 2010. In terms of overnight stays, Prague also enjoyed a respectable position, beating leading tourist destinations such as Barcelona, Vienna, Madrid and Amsterdam. Such unprecedented success is thanks above all due to an excellent marketing campaign that promoted Prague abroad. As a result, in terms ofthe number of overnight stays, visitors from abroad clearly predominated. Last, year, the tourist industry as a whole enjoyed significant growth. In 2010 the number of overnight stays in Prague amounted to 12,090,367, an increase of 7% when compared to 2009. Although there was a recession in the tourist industry worldwide, Prague continued to be a leading tourist destination. Useful Tips When Choosing Apartment in Prague Prague Old Town vs. New Town When looking for accommodation, many visitors focus only Prague Old Town, but there are many benefits of accommodation in the New Town. What are the pros and cons of both quarters? Old Town – advantages Prague Old Town is very picturesque. Very convenient location in the heart of Prague. Many of the main attractions such as Old Town Square are located in the Old Town. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Lots of restaurants, cafes, bars and gift shops. Lots of gift shops/antique shops. Good range of hotels. Old Town – disadvantages Even if the furnishings and facilities of Old Town apartments are new and modern, there may be problems related to the age and condition of the building where your apartment is located. Many buildings in the Old Town are centuries old, and quality standards may be different from those of other countries. Problems include creaking floors, weak water pressure and the poor state of repair of communal areas. In addition, interiors can be humid, courtyards can be poorly lit at night, and gaining entry to the building, particularly at night, can be slightly inconvenient. Other disadvantages: Lots of crowds; can be noisy. Lack of supermarkets, and fewer grocers’, bakeries’, convenience stores, etc. than elsewhere in Prague. Lack of inexpensive restaurants. Although the metro and tram routes pass through the Old Town, it’s further away from the main train station (although not too far away). If you have a car, you won‘t be permitted to drive it through the Old Town because it‘s largely pedestrianised. Many people don’t pay attention to these important issues, focusing only on the most beautiful locations. As a result, if they are in the Old Town, they are often surprised by the state of the building where they are staying. We recommend that if you’re looking for Old Town accommodation, you ask lots of questions in order to avoid disappointments and to know what to expect. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental New Town – advantages Although slightly further away from the key historic sights, the New Town is still very conveniently located. Accommodation is more modern, which means that in terms of apartments you can usually expect large and modern apartments of a high standard. Excellent public transport (two metro stations on Wenceslas Square alone) Excellent choice of shopping and entertainment venues Lots of restaurants, cafes and bars. Easy access to the main train station and main bus station Good range of hotels. New Town – disadvantages Less picturesque than the Old Town. Less centrally located, although still within walking distance of many of the main sights. Lots of crowds; can be noisy. Parking can be a problem if you have a car. Where the main sights are located? Prague Old Town Astronomical Clock Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Charles Bridge Jewish Quarter Karlova street (part of the Royal Way) Klementinum Municipal House Old Town Square / Týn Church / Old Town Hall Powder Tower Prague New Town National Museum National Theatre State Opera Wenceslas Square Summing up To help you decide, make a note of the kind of accommodation you are looking for, and whether you’d prefer a hotel or self-catering. Consider what factors you like (e.g. accessibility) and dislike (e.g. noise) when you’re living at home. Then think about what you’d like to see in Prague and where you’d like to be based. Lastly, list your priorities, but before booking ask the accommodation provider lots of questions to help you decide. Special Seasonal Offers If you're looking for the best deals on Prague accommodation, here are some suggestions for making the most of your Prague apartments stay. Just bear in mind two important things: you need to be quick, and special offers are available only in certain months. Fewer people visit Prague in winter, partly thanks to the cold weather. But each season in the city has its special charms, and the sight of Prague under a layer of fresh snow on a sparklingly clear winter's day is a truly magical experience. And in the quiet post-Christmas period, when your energy levels need a boost, a winter break in the city may be just what you need. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Low season reductions As fewer tourists come to Prague during the winter, accommodation providers are quite creative and frequently offer great deals to attract customers. You can often find "X nights for the price of Y nights" offers, which are common in the low season. Sometimes they only apply on weekdays, but in all cases accommodation is free of charge for one night. Other offers include free extras (extra bed, complimentary drinks, free airport transfers, etc.), or a combination of them. As room rates are up to 50% lower in the autumn and winter (apart from Christmas), these deals can be quite attractive. However, they only apply in the low season, and from April until November you will have to pay for each night of your stay. Special offers The best winter break deal is probably the Valentine's special offer, which includes the promotions above as well as free extras such as a bottle of champagne and a romantic gift when you arrive at your Prague apartment, specially decorated rooms (can be tailored to guests' wishes), romantic dinner, free late check-out and other services. Unlike the above offers, early bird discounts are usually valid all year round and gives a 3-10% discount on your apartment when you book in advance (3 months or earlier). Each Prague accommodation agency has different conditions, so you should ask in advance for details. High demand means no special deals The offers described above are the most typical deals on holiday rentals in Prague. They will depend on how much each accommodation provider wants to attract clients. If you think that a particular deal could apply just ask the accommodation agency. Bear in mind though that where is a high demand, no discounts will be offered, and if you try to bargain on a price, the accommodation could be offered to somebody else. So, to get the best deals, it pays to shop around before you book your holiday in Prague. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Transportation in Prague How to get from Prague airport to your Prague Apartment There are several ways of reaching your Prague apartment from Prague Airport, which is just over 10km northwest of the city centre. An efficient signposting system helps you to find your way around the airport. Prague Airport has two terminals: terminal 1 serves all non-Schengen destinations; terminal 2 Schengen Zone destinations. Both are linked and are a 5- minute walk from each other. Prague apartment provider We recommend using the taxi company your Prague apartment provider works with. The taxi can wait for you whenever you arrive, even if you are late or the flight is cancelled, and will take you directly to your apartment in Prague. The taxi company will keep in touch with your apartment provider so that he can confirm directly with the driver that everything is in order. He can also check that you are already on the way to your accommodation. Depending on the season, free transport to the airport may be possible. Taxis Taxi ranks are located in front of both terminals. The two taxi companies authorised to operate on the airport premises are (AAA Radiotaxi and Radiocab Taxi. With the former you can simply hop on, without having to book. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Other taxi companies wait at the airport, but they have arrangements with hotels and accommodation companies to pick up guests as they arrive. Booking a taxi with these companies is therefore not possible. Public transport The Prague Transport Company (Dopravní podník hl.m. Prahy) operates five daytime bus services and one night bus service. The bus stops at the airport are indicated by a red sign with a bus logo, and buses call at both terminals. Bear in mind that the journey may take longer, depending on the volume of traffic. Daytime services run from around 4am-midnight; the AE service starts later and finishes earlier. Night buses operate from around midnight-4am. Bus no. 119 runs every 5-20 minutes and is the most frequent service. Daytime services No.119: Prague Airport-Dejvická metro terminus (line A) – approx. 24 min., daily No.100: Prague Airport-Zličín metro terminus (line B) – approx. 18 min., daily No.179: Prague Airport-Nové Butovice metro station (line B) – approx. 45 min., daily No.225: Prague Airport-Nové Butovice metro station (line B) – approx. 53 min., daily AE (Airport Express): Prague Airport-Praha hlavní nádraží (Prague Main Station)/Hlavní Nádraží hlavní metro station (line C) – journey time approx. 41 min., daily Night service No 510: Prague Airport-I.P. Pavlova metro station (line C)-Na Beránku – approx. 42 minutes (to I.P. Pavlova), operates Mon-Fri. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Tickets Tickets can be bought from the Prague Transport Company information kiosks in the arrival halls of terminals 1 or 2 (7am-10pm). They are also available from the yellow machines at the bus stops. Instructions are in English, and the machines only accept coins. In addition, tickets can be obtained from the bus driver (notes or coins only). A standard single ticket costs CZK 26 (approximately EUR 1) for adults and CZK 13 for children. It can be used on all means of public transport in Prague and is valid for 75 minutes. Tickets purchased from a bus driver cost CZK 30/17 (75 minutes). Short- term (tourist) passes are also valid. A special tariff applies to AE buses. Standard tickets and passes cannot be used on them; tickets cost CZK 50/25 from Praha hlavní nádraží (CZK 30/15 from Dejvická metro station) and are available from the driver only. Bear in mind that large luggage may require a separate ticket. For details and other public transport information see www.dpp.cz/en. Getting Around Prague The best way to enjoy Prague is to walk: the historic centre is compact enough to see on foot, and your Prague apartment is close to many of the main sights. However, if you’re tired of walking or want to travel beyond the centre, Prague’s comprehensive public transport network can help you get around easily. The system is run by the Prague Transport Company (Dopravní podník hlavního města Prahy), and is efficient, quick, user-friendly and relatively cheap. It comprises a metro and a network of trams, buses and funicular railway. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental A range of tickets and short-term passes are available, and are valid on all forms of public transport in Prague, including suburban trains and buses. Reductions are available on both tickets and passes. In the case of tickets, fares also depend on whether you are transferring between transport modes. The “transfer ticket” (přestupní jízdenka) is valid for 1 hour upon validation at peak times, and 90 minutes at off-peak times/weekends, and during the journey you can transfer as often as you like. A “non-transfer ticket” (nepřestupní jízdenka) is valid for a shorter period and a number of restrictions apply to it. As its name suggests, the transfer ticket does not allow transfers apart from changing metro line. Both types of ticket must be validated at the start of the journey; otherwise, you will be fined if you are subject to a ticket inspection. Bear in mind that ticket inspectors patrol public transport in the city centre very frequently, and ignorance of the system cannot be used as an excuse. With this in mind, it’s handy to know that Prague Public Transport Company allows you to buy transfer tickets by text (SMS jízdenka). All you need to do is send a message to a specified number. If you intend to use public transport frequently, short-term passes are available for 1, 3 or 5 days; for longer visits, a 30-day pass is available. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental In most of these cases, reductions are available. Even if you stay not much longer than 5 days, the 30-day pass can save you money. Don’t forget that as of 1 July 2011, the prices of tickets will increase substantially, making short-term passes even more attractive. Other significant changes will also be introduced as of this date. You can buy tickets from the yellow vending machines at metro stations, and some bus and tram stops. You can also purchase them directly from the staff at certain metro stations, and tickets and passes are on sale at the Prague Public Transport Company information centres, and street kiosks among other places. For more detailed information about public transport in Prague see www.dpp.cz. Don’t Miss in Prague! Farmers’ Markets In Prague Many visitors to Prague are keen to sample local food and drink; one of the best ways to do so is at a farmer’s market, where a full range of local produce is on sale. Farmer’s markets, where farmers and producers sell directly to the public, have become more and more popular in Prague since they first appeared a year ago. The markets are held across the city, in large public spaces, and mostly run from spring to the autumn, although the market at the Holešovice Tržnice holešovice markets is open throughout the year. And if you’re visiting Prague in the run-up to Christmas, look out for local products on sale at some of the city’s Christmas markets. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Helping the local businesses and the environment At the markets you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, fish, sausages, pork and beef, bakery products, honey and much more. More unusual products are also sold at farmers’ markets, such as ice cream made from goats’ milk. All of these products have one thing in common: they are sourced in the Czech Republic, which means that when you buy from a farmers’ market, you can help support local businesses. In addition, because the products are not transported over large distances, farmers’ markets are also better for the environment. Indeed, much of the produce on offer, such as fruit and vegetables or beef, is organic, which is indicated by the word “bio” in Czech, and all products meet certain quality standards. Markets are also a good place to pick up fair trade items, which are becoming increasingly common in the Czech Republic, and products from smaller, more specialist firms. Such companies often emphasise traditional production methods, authenticity and quality, rather than selling to a large number of consumers. It’s a treat to buy from them because often their products are not found in the supermarkets, so you feel you have bought something special. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental You also know that you are paying for quality. Naplavka, Prague 2 The most central of the markets in Prague is known as “Naplavka” and is located on the embankment immediately below Paláckého náměstí, close Paláckého most (bridge). The farmers’ market is held on Saturday from 8.00 until 14.00, and around 40 stallholders trade there. There are excellent public transport connections, and the market is particularly convenient if you’re staying in one of the Bohemia Apartments Prague Old Town on Smetanovo nábřezí. The market is close to Karlovo náměstí metro station, on line “B”, and tram numbers 3, 4, 7, 10, 16, 17 and 21 pass through the two Paláckého náměstí tram stops adjacent to the metro station. The websitewww.farmarsketrziste.cz/en/ has more details about the Naplavka market and other markets in Prague run by the same organisation. The Farmářské trhy organisation also runs farmers’ markets in Prague (www.farmarske-trhy.cz – in Czech only). Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com

eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Golden Lane at Prague Castle Is Open Again One of Prague’s top tourist attractions, Golden Lane (Zlatá ulička) at Prague Castle, is welcoming visitors once again after an extensive renovation and restoration programme. The picturesque narrow alley, lined by tiny, colourfully painted houses, was re-opened by Czech President Václav Klaus on 1 June. Golden Lane was closed in May 2010, prompted by the urgent need to overhaul the outdated sewerage system, which posed a threat to the foundations of the houses. The work cost CZK 34 million. The cottages were built into the castle fortifications in the 16th century to house Emperor Rudolf II’s 24 marksmen, although only one house, no 13, survives from that period. It’s hard to believe that until the 19 th century, outhouses lined the other side of the street, making it even narrower, in some places only two metres wide. By that time, Golden Lane was becoming a slum as artisans took up residence, living cheek by jowl with their animals and neighbours in an extremely cramped environment. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Despite the squalor, the picturesque appearance of Golden Lane was recognised, and care was taken to preserve its character as far back as the early days of Czechoslovakia. Golden continued to be inhabited well into the 20 th century, and the most famous resident was writer Franz Kafka, who stayed at no 22 intermittently in 1916-17. In 1951 the last inhabitants were evicted by the Communists, who turned the cottages into a row of souvenir shops. If you go on a guided tour of Prague Castle you’ll probably hear the different stories concerning the origin of the street’s name. Some claim that it is connected with the goldsmiths who lived here in the 17th century; others say that the gold refers to the alchemists working at Prague Castle, the most infamous of whom was Englishman Edward Kelley. He was locked up in the White Tower Bílá věž by Rudolf II for failing to turn metal into gold. As part of the renovation project, some of the houses serve as a museum of Golden Lane, with an emphasis on historical accuracy, and the remainder will continue to sell souvenirs. Although the cottages are extremely picturesque and cosy, they are very cramped, and you’ll be glad that your Prague apartment is a much more spacious place to live! Steps at the eastern end of Golden Lane lead to a terrace and the round Daliborka Tower, also a former prison, and connected with a legend that inspired composer Bedřich Smetana’s opera Dalibor. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Golden Lane is the most popular sight of the castle complex and inevitably becomes very crowded with visitors throughout the day. If you want to experience its magic properly, you should visit in the late evening. During the day, entry to Golden Lane is by admission only. See the Prague Castle website (www.hrad.cz) for details. Hidden Places In Prague: Nový svět When exploring Old Prague, you could be tempted to keep to the most famous streets, such as Karlova in the Old Town or Nerudova in the Lesser Quarter. But if you did, you‘d miss some of Prague’s most atmospheric corners. One of the best hidden gems is the cluster of picturesque lanes around Nový svět. They’re just a short hop away from the Castle, yet remarkably, few visitors notice them. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental To get there, walk from Hradčanské náměstí, with the gates of Prague Castle behind you, to the Archbishop’s Palace, the large gleaming white Baroque palace immediately to the right of the Castle. Continue along this side of the square, and at the end of the row you’ll see the striking Martinický palác, decorated with sgraffito. If you’re a film buff and have a very good memory, you may recognise the building: it was Mozart’s house in Amadeus. Here, turn into Kanovnická, where you’ll immediately notice the change of pace and atmosphere, as the bustle of Hradčany soon fades behind you. Ahead is the church of St John of Nepomuk. Turn right and then, a couple of steps on, left into Nový svět, the heart of this picturesque little quarter. As it name suggests, Nový svět was once a new district, although poor, run down, and inhabited by artisans. It’s hard to believe this today, because the cobbled, curving lane is surely one of the most picturesque corners of Prague thanks to its intimate atmosphere, brightly painted Baroque dwellings, and location tucked away at the back of Hradčany. Time seems to have passed Nový svět by, and it has a special magic at any time: under a dusting of snow on a brilliantly clear winter’s day, or in midsummer twilight. As you walk along, you’ll notice many little details that make Nový Svět very special, such as the old street lamps, and the street sign in German on the corner of Nový svět and Černínská. Another reminder of times past is the požární automat, an old- fashioned fire alarm, next to the front door of no 25. Just a few steps on, where Nový svět curves enticingly round the corner into Černinská, is a scene that you’ll recognise from many postcards. The small cottages resemble Golden Lane at Prague Castle, and this part of Hradčany is as picturesque as the more famous street, but much less busy. Share this eBook: www.bohemia-apartments.com
eBook | Choosing Prague Apartment Rental Continue up steep Černínská, past the famous Gambra surrealist art gallery, and into Loretánské náměstí. On your left is the simple yellow Capuchin monastery, which contrasts sharply with the vast bulk of the Černín Palace, Prague’s largest. The florid church directly opposite the palace is the Loreta, a famous Baroque place of pilgrimage, whose bell chimes ring out over Hradčany every hour. Our tour ends here, back amidst of the bustling route to the Castle. But whenever you want to avoid the crowds and noise, you can always escape to the secret, magical world of Nový Svět.
