EDUCATIONAL FUND RISING FOR SABAH INSTITUTE OF ART
(SIA)

Ever since the most dangerous virus outbreak and widely spread early this year, Corona
Virus or known as COVID-19 has claimed hundreds of lives and the number increase daily
as it declared as a public health emergency of international concern by the World health
Organization (WHO). Nearly every aspect of normal life has been affected by the spread of
the virus and one huge area that COVID-19 is impacting and sowing major confusion is in
higher education which has been hit particularly hard by the pandemic.

Colleges and universities globally have been thrown into very uncertain waters as they are
forced to convert to online-only courses while struggling with other issues, especially in the
struggles of finances and ad-hoc tasks.

The new norms such as admissions tests will be offered online and at home, the schools
will have to adjust to teaching online effectively are likely to go down and getting compli-
cated as many students and their parents may no longer be in the position where they are
afford to pay the tuition fees because of being laid off, fired, unable to pay off loans, and
needing to dip into their savings.

Amidst the challenging days of pandemic crisis, Sabah Institute of Art’s President, Prof.
Dato’ Dr. Wilson Yong Tung Yung, JP has come with the unique ways to offering help by sell-
ing his personal drawing to raise educational fund for the institute.

With the effect faced by most colleges and universities are multifaceted and quite complex,
Yong’s said he painted 100 ink paintings since the first day of
Movement Control Order (MCO) has been implemented in Malaysia back in March.

Targeting around RM150,000 by selling 30 pieces of his artworks to raise the fund, Yong’s
want to help the institution and the needed student who can’t afford to pay their school
fees as well to upgrade the proper system for both online learning and teaching methods.
In the longer term, this means there is a need for education systems to be set up with more
contingency capacities to mitigate and manage any possible risk in the future.
