What are Chevening Scholarships? The UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. Available in over 160 countries and territories, we offer scholarships for fully funded one-year master’s degrees in any subject and at any UK university.
Who are Chevening Scholarships for? If you’re passionate about creating change in the communities around you and have the drive to realise your ambitions, we want to hear from you. What gets us excited is a demonstrable commitment to achieving your goals and making a positive difference in the world we share.
What are the requirements for a Chevening Scholarship? In order to submit an eligible application, you must: • Be a citizen of South Africa • Already have an undergraduate degree. An honours degree for most courses • Have at least two years’ work experience • Not have previously received UK government funding to study in the UK • Agree to return home for two years after your scholarship
Additional eligibility criteria Chevening focus areas in South Africa • Governance • Sectors that promote economic recovery • Science and innovation • Climate change and natural resource management
Are there further eligibility criteria? Before being awarded a scholarship, selected candidates must also: • Hold an unconditional offer from at least one of their three course choices
What does a Chevening Scholarship cover? • Fully covered* tuition fees • A living allowance at a set rate (for one individual) • An economy return flight to the UK • Additional grants to cover essential expenditure * There is a global Chevening fee cap of £18,000 for MBAs
What else does a Chevening Scholarship offer? Chevening Scholars are also invited to a vast programme of exclusive networking events, talks, trips across the UK, and volunteering opportunities On graduating, scholars join over 50,000 other Chevening Alumni who together form an influential and highly regarded global network
What else does a Chevening Scholarship offer? Exclusive networking events in recent years have included: • Roundtable policy discussions at the FCO with key staff • Burns Night celebrations in Scotland • Wilton Park digital diplomacy retreat • Receptions with Chevening Partner organisations • Leadership retreats at Cumberland Lodge
What else does a Chevening Scholarship offer? Exclusive academic talks in recent years have included: • Chevening Conference in Manchester • Chevening Debate in Cambridge • Global Leaders’ workshop in Durham • Media training in Manchester • Chevening Talks in London
What else does a Chevening Scholarship offer? Exclusive trips and tours around the UK in recent years have included: • 10 Downing Street, the Scottish Parliament, the Houses of Parliament • Stonehenge, the Roman Baths, the Giant’s Causeway, the London Eye • Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium • Harry Potter film studios • Hiking up Mount Snowdon
What else does a Chevening Scholarship offer? The Chevening Alumni community Chevening has been running since 1983 and Chevening Alumni form the backbone of the programme. Numbering over 50,000 worldwide, our alumni constitute a highly-regarded global network of skilled professionals working in a range of fields, including politics, business, law, media, and civil society.

Application and selection timeline – what happens, and when? 3 September 2020………… Applications open 3 November 2020………….. Applications close Early November 2020……... Applications are sifted against eligibility criteria November/December 2020.. Independent reading committees assess applications January/February 2021…… Applicants are shortlisted for interview February 2021……………… Shortlisted applicants are notified that they are invited to interview
Application and selection timeline – what happens, and when? March to May 2021…...…… Interview period June 2021……….………….. Announcement of interview results 15 July 2021………………... Selected applicants must have received an offer from one of their three selected universities 15 July 2021………………... Selected applicants must have met Chevening’s English language requirements September/October 2021…. Successful applicants arrive in the UK to start their year as Chevening Scholars!
Further information about Chevening Scholarships Over the past five years, the UK government has supported almost 9,000 scholars from countries around the world and over 800 from South Africa.
