Challenge #2 VOLCANO OVERNIGHT HIKE THIS WILL BE AN OVERNIGHT HIKE YOU’LL NEVER FORGET! Climbing Volcan Acatenango is at the top of the bucket list for adventure travelers in Guatemala. This remarkable volcano towers above the landscape at 13,041 ft / 3,976 m, which makes it the third highest volcano in Central America. Aside from providing panoramic views of the entire region, Acatenango gives hikers a birds-eye-view of nearby (and very active!) Volcan Fuego which has been erupting on a near constant basis since colonial times. The hike to the top of the volcano will take us through four distinct ecosystems; agricultural fields, tropical cloud forest, high-alpine forest and mystical volcanic terrain. After a tough hike, we will set up a camp at 12,300 ft / 3,750 meters. There we will enjoy a hot dinner over the campfire with views of volcanic eruptions and the mesmerizing sky full of stars above us. The following morning, we will watch the sunrise from Acatenango’s summit before we start the final 45 minutes’ ascent to the top of the world. Although demanding for even the most seasoned hiker, you will experience the best Guatemala has to offer to adrenaline and adventure-seekers. 4 odimguatemala.org
