Call for Papers for the Forum-Vormärz-Forschung Yearbook 2023:

German- British Cultural Transfer in the Vormärz (Pre-March 1848) Era

The Post-Napoleonic political reality after 1815 witnessed a growing mutual interest
on the part of the victorious powers, the German Confederation and Great Britain.
Britons and Germans encountered each other not only on the level of European high
politics, or in the realms of tourism or commerce. Encounters in the fields of
journalism, historiography, in travel reports and translations were just as important,
as were those in narrative forms, in novels and plays, and in literary criticism.

The growing interest in literary relations between Germany and Great Britain is
attested to by the Yearbook for Anglo-German Cultural Relations Angermion,
appearing since 2008, Lore Knapp’s and Elke Kronshage’s essay collection Britisch-
deutscher Literaturtransfer 1756-1832 (2016), and the 2019 London conference Two
Centuries of Anglo-German Correspondences: Celebrating Queen Victoria, Prince
Albert, George Eliot and Theodor Fontane. Nevertheless, this interest has so far
failed to yield an adequate contextualization of these relations for the Vormärz
period.

The FVF-Yearbook 2023 aims at just such a reconstruction of the literary relations
between Germany and Great Britain in the period 1815-1848. It is hoped that the
Yearbook will do justice to some of the facets of the multifarious transfer of culture

and knowledge between the two countries by making use of the enlarged conception
of literature that was current in the nineteenth century, a conception which, while
privileging literary fiction, also encompassed writing in the domains of history,
theology, the natural and political sciences, to name but a few genres.

Scholars have to date chiefly been interested in literary transfer from Great Britain
to Germany. Less attention has been paid to the selection, translation and
dissemination of German literature in Britain, particularly in the Vormärz era. The
balance of literary transfer in an age of Anglophilia that lasted from the mid-
eighteenth century to the 1830s was tilted in favor of the export of literature from
Britain to Germany. Around 1800 and with the advent of Early Romanticism and
Weimar Classicism there is a discernible shift in the balance, favoring the increasing
reception of German literature in Britain. The busts of German authors on display at
the London Great Exhibition in 1851 attest to a certain consolidation of the profile of
German literature in Britain precisely in this pre-1848 Vormärz era. The busts
exhibited included the great canonical authors, Goethe, Schiller, Klopstock, Lessing,
Wieland; but, perhaps surprisingly, more contemporary figures such as Berthold
Auerbach, Karl Gutzkow and Alexander von Humboldt were also to be seen.

Close study of reviews in such literary magazines as the Dublin University Magazine,
Fraser’s Magazine, Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine and The Westminster Review
will most likely reveal that the reception of German literature embraced writers
beyond and below the highest level of canonical, highbrow literature. What
journalists, translators and critics, writing in these journals, played the leading role
in mediating and interpreting German literature to their readers?

The FVF-Yearbook 2023 is especially interested in these cultural mediators.
Contributions are invited that shed new light on the work of well-known mediators:
George Henry Lewes, Mary Anne Evans (George Eliot), Thomas Carlyle, Walter
Scott, James Clarence Mangan, Heinrich Heine, Theodor Fontane, Georg Weerth,
Friedrich Engels oder Jacob Venedey. But the Editor also seeks essays that
illuminate the work of less well-known cultural mediators who were nevertheless
influential in the Vormärz. Corporate and institutional mediators including literary
publications are also of interest in this context.

On a visit to Leipzig in 1833, the German writer Heinrich Laube was astonished by
the rate at which British visitors staying in the Hôtel de Bavière devoured
newspapers and other printed matter. Who were these British travelers in the
Vormärz? Which of them were seekers after knowledge at the new universities

patterned on the Humboldtian model, or pilgrims to shrines of German culture like
Weimar? Essays are welcome that examine the role of travel narratives in
constituting the image of Germany as a Kulturnation of growing importance, as are
contributions that address the representation of particularism and difference within
the German Confederation.

Contributions to the FVF-Yearbook are invited from scholars and Early Career
Researchers in the fields of German Studies, English Literature, Comparative
Studies, History, Art History, Musicology, Philosophy, Theology and the social
sciences. The Editor would like to express a strong preference for contributions in
German, the principal language of the FVF-Yearbook, but a small and strictly limited
number of contributions in English may be considered.

The final date for the submission of completed contributions to the Editor is July 31,
2023.

Die neuen politischen Konstellationen nach 1815 führten auch zu einem neuen
Interesse der ‚Siegermächte‘ des Deutschen Bundes und Großbritannien
aneinander. Briten und Deutsche begegneten sich aber nicht nur auf der Ebene der
europäischen Hochpolitik, im Tourismus, oder auf wirtschaftlichem Gebiet. Von
gleicher Bedeutung waren Begegnungen im Journalismus, in der
Geschichtsschreibung, in den Reiseberichten und Übersetzungen, in den
Erzählungen, Romanen und Dramen und literarischer Kritik.

Literarische Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Großbritannien finden
zunehmend die Aufmerksamkeit der Forschung, erwähnt seien das seit 2008
erscheinende Jahrbuch für britische-deutsche Kulturbeziehungen Angermion, der
2016 von Lore Knapp und Elke Kronshage herausgegebene Aufsatzband Britisch-
deutscher Literaturtransfer 1756-1832, oder die 2019 in London stattfindende

H-German

Tagung Two Centuries of Anglo-German Correspondences: Celebrating Queen
Victoria, Prince Albert, George Eliot and Theodor Fontane. Dennoch steht eine
umfassende Kontextualisierung dieser Beziehungen für die Epoche des Vormärz
immer noch aus.

Deswegen zielt dieser Band auf eine Rekonstruktion der literarischen Beziehungen
zwischen Deutschland und Großbritannien für den Zeitraum 1815-1848. Er sucht
den vielfältigen Facetten des Kultur- und Wissenstransfers zwischen beiden Ländern
gerecht zu werden, indem er mit dem erweiterten Literaturbegriff des neunzehnten
Jahrhunderts operiert: einem Literaturbegriff, dessen Schwerpunkt in der
Belletristik liegt, der aber auch für historische, politische, theologische, natur- und
staatswissenschaftliche Schriften offen ist.

Bisher hat sich die Forschung hauptsächlich für den Literaturtransfer von
Großbritannien nach Deutschland interessiert. Weniger Beachtung hat die Auswahl,
Übersetzung und Verbreitung deutscher Literatur in Großbritannien speziell in der
Epoche des Vormärz gefunden. Die Asymmetrie des Literaturtransfers in einem
Zeitalter der anhaltenden Anglophilie von der Mitte des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts
bis in die dreißiger Jahre des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts wirkte zugunsten der
britischen Literatur. Mit der Klassik und der Frühromantik fand jedoch auch eine
Umkehrbewegung statt, die für eine verstärkte Rezeption deutscher Texte in
Großbritannien sorgte. Die 1851 im Londoner Crystal Palace ausgestellten Büsten
deutscher Dichter und Schriftsteller zeugen vom Erstarken des Profils deutscher
Literatur in Großbritannien gerade im Vormärz. Neben kanonischen Größen wie
Goethe, Schiller, Klopstock, Lessing, Wieland und Tieck waren überraschender
Weise auch die Gegenwartsautoren Berthold Auerbach, Karl Gutzkow und Alexander
von Humboldt auf der Weltausstellung zu sehen.

Dass deutsche Schriftsteller (und Schriftstellerinnen) auch unterhalb der Ebene der
kanonisierten Hochliteratur auf dem britischen Markt sich durchsetzen, dürfte aus
einer Untersuchung der Kritiken in literarischen Zeitschriften wie die Dublin
University Magazine, Blackwell’s Edinburgh Magazine, Fraser’s Magazine and The
Westminster Review ersichtlich werden. Welche britischen JournalistInnen,
KritikerInnen und ÜbersetzerInnen, die in diesen Organen veröffentlichten, spielen
eine führende Rolle bei der Vermittlung und Interpretation deutscher Literatur?

Ein besonderes Augenmerk des geplanten Bandes gilt diesen Kulturvermittlerinnen
und Kulturvermittlern. Dabei sind Beiträge erwünscht, welche der britisch-
deutschen Vermittlungsarbeit bekannter Größen wie George Henry Lewes, Mary

Anne Evans (George Eliot), Thomas Carlyle, Walter Scott, James Clarence Mangan,
Heinrich Heine, Theodor Fontane, Georg Weerth, Friedrich Engels oder Jacob
Venedey neue Aspekte abgewinnen. Aber auch Aufsätze, die sich der Aufdeckung
seinerzeit einflussreicher, aber nunmehr wenig bekannter Autorinnen und Autoren
widmen, verdienen einen wichtigen Platz. Zeitungen, Zeitschriften und Journale sind
neben anderen Institutionen ebenfalls an der Vermittlerrolle beteiligt.

1833 bewunderte Heinrich Laube den Lesehunger britischer Reisender in Leipzig,
die »mehr Zeitungen an einem Tag [verbrauchten], als die ganze übrige teutsche
Tischgesellschaft in einer Woche«. Wer sind die Reisenden aus Großbritannien, die
im Vormärz die Forschungsuniversitäten Humboldt’scher Prägung und Stätten
deutscher Kultur wie Weimar aufsuchten? Inwiefern tragen ihre Reiseberichte zur
Konstituierung des Bildes von Deutschland als aufstrebender Kulturnation bei? Wie
tendieren sie zu einer Differenzierung, indem sie den Partikularismus und regionale
Unterschiede thematisieren?

Willkommen sind Beiträge bevorzugt auf Deutsch aus der Germanistik, Anglistik,
Komparatistik, Geschichtswissenschaft, der Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft, der
Philosophie und der Theologie, und aus den Sozialwissenschaften.

Abgabeschluss für die Beiträge ist Ende Juli 2023.

Vorschläge mit einem kurzen Exposé (nicht länger als 500 Worte) bitte bis zum 30.
