A message from the PRESIDENT Dear Alumni and Friends of Central Catholic: If you are anything like me, you have grown tired of catch phrases like, “In these challenging times” or “navigating uncharted waters.” As accurate as these phrases reflect what the world, our nation and our school are dealing with during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have also come to realize that our “new normal” presents us with an opportunity. This is exactly the approach that the Central Catholic community has taken in the last several months. We have discovered that, as much as we love our campus and the comfort of our classrooms, the traditional grandeur of the Memorial Gymnasium or the friendly comradery of our Baroni Multipurpose Hall, our Central Catholic experience goes far beyond bricks and mortar. I want you to know that the Central Catholic Spirit has thrived during these days. In these pages you will get a glimpse into the creativity, compassion, and spiritual determination that has made me so proud of this school, our staff, our students, and our dedicated alumni. I have always believed that Central Catholic is a special place, but the past few months have inspired me even more. St. Marcellin Champagnat told the earliest Marist Brothers that if you want to teach young people, you must love them first. Since March, I have seen that love in action in a multitude of unique and creative ways. I hope you enjoy reading these stories, and as always, we are grateful for your continued support. Please know that we pray for you all every day. Peace, Christopher F. Sullivan ’81 – President
Emblem Fall 2020 Central's COVID-19 HEROES Few of us realized the long-reaching impact the COVID-19 health crisis would have on every facet of our daily life – Central Catholic was not excluded from the wake of this pandemic. But this unprecedented global event presented an opportunity for us to adapt quickly and successfully, going above and beyond to deliver a robust academic and student life experience to our students via innovative online resources. Additionally, many of our alumni have proven to be COVID-19 heroes, working the front line in a variety of fields to ensure that safety and health prevail. This issue of the Emblem pays tribute to our students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni – you are all COVID-19 heroes and represent CCHS in the best way possible – by serving and caring for others, even during a crisis. Please note that a portion of the COVID-19 content was developed during the peak of the pandemic and details may have changed according to current health advisories.
alumni spotlight BROTHERS ON THE FRONT LINE: Garrett Bomba, MD ’92 and Randall Bomba, RN ’94 Brothers and CCHS alumni, Dr. Garrett Bomba ’92, MD and Randall Bomba ’94, RN, are both in the trenches fighting COVID-19 and supporting patients in our local communities. Dr. Garrett J. Bomba ’92, Chief Physician Executive at Pentucket Medical, serves patients with COVID-19 at a designated Respiratory Illness Clinic in Lawrence. “Our entire practice transitioned traditional ‘in person’ care to virtual care, and during the peak of the virus, we successfully converted the majority of our visits into telehealth visits. It is vital during these times to continue providing our community access to healthcare.” Dr. Bomba serves as a health consultant for Central Catholic High School. Randall Bomba ’94, RN, Interventional Radiolology, Lowell General Hospital, has been a Registered Nurse at Lowell General Hospital since 2008 and assists with IV access to COVID-19 patients. “When it came to caring for COVID -19 patients, you had to get over the fear of the unknown really quickly. We had the proper protective gear and didn’t hesitate going to the bedside of these patients.” RAIDER RNs Lawrence General Hospital This dedicated crew of CCHS grads, Melissa Marroquin ’12, RN, Leah Bradley ’13, RN, Mary Napolitano ’11, RN, Sabrina Beaudoin ’10, RN, Megan Daly ’11, RN (photographed L to R on the left page), are all Registered Nurses at Lawrence General Hospital caring for COVID-19 patients. “Every day is a mix of emotions at work and some days are better than others. Things change constantly, but we are learning more as we go on. It is definitely not easy and many risks are involved, but I do enjoy being able to care for those who need it most during this stressful time.” – Leah Bradley ’13, RN 5
Emblem Fall 2020 VETERAN PHARMACIST Veteran Pharmacist (45 years and counting) Don Uliano ’67, R. Ph is serving patients during these trying times as a Pharmacy Manager in Lawrence, MA. “It’s been very challenging to work on the front lines during this pandemic. Most of our patients are elderly and almost all have underlying illnesses so it’s important for me to counsel the patients regarding the dangers of COVID-19. I truly enjoy helping the citizens of Lawrence, the city I grew up in.” RAIDER RN – BEVERLY HOSPITAL Alicia (Daly) Paola ’07, RN has worked in multiple units at Beverly Hospital (MA) caring for patients with COVID-19. “Working in this environment, I have had an array of emotions from anxiety, fear, frustration, to relief and gratification when someone gets better and is discharged. This pandemic has definitely made me even more proud to be a nurse, and I am grateful to help make a difference and care for people in their most vulnerable state.” EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EXECUTIVE As the Director of Security & Emergency Preparedness at Lowell General Hospital (MA), Brendan Riley ’97, MS, CHPA has found himself incredibly busy and constantly on alert throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have been working with federal, state, regional and local partners to ensure our workforce has access to critical protective gear and other supplies and equipment throughout the pandemic. Our security team provides all of our medical professionals with a safe environment and support so they can do their jobs with calm confidence and total focus on patient care.” CHAPLAIN AT ST. ELIZABETH’S Heather Angell ’00 serves as a Chaplain at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center (Boston, MA) and as a Hospice Chaplain at Merrimack Valley Hospice (Lawrence, MA). “For COVID-19 positive patients, we provide family support over the phone and stand outside the patient room to pray, especially at end-of-life when even family cannot be present. I’m grateful to CCHS for fostering my love for theology and service in Campus Ministry.” 6

But ultimately, there are really sick people that need help, and I have the ability to help them. I try more than ever to be the nurse I would want my family and friends to have if this became their reality.” MORE ALUMNI COVID-19 HEROES Stephanie Graffeo ’12, OTR/L, Edmond “EJ” Solomon ’10, PharmD, Occupational Therapist for Care One BCPS, BCCP, Critical Care Pharmacist at (Newton, MA). Emblem Fall 2020 Central's COVID-19 RESPONSE As CCHS continues to respond to the ongoing pandemic, we remain awe-inspired by the ingenuity, creativity and selflessness of our campus community. From remote learning to virtual student life, our faculty, students and staff have gathered as “Central Together” – embracing innovation and acclimating to a constantly evolving health climate. Since March 2020, Central Catholic’s administration, faculty, and staff have been working tirelessly to bring about a safer and healthier “Return to Campus” experience. Dedicated task forces were quickly formed and thorough health guidelines and safety protocols were established, in addition to three comprehensive learning models (On Campus, Hybrid Live, and Remote Live) – each option is a synchronous learning experience with live, real-time instruction. Also, a detailed “Return to Campus” guide was developed as the “go to” document for students, faculty, and staff to safely come back to the CCHS campus. This fall, CCHS was able to commence the academic year in the hybrid model thanks to the commitment and dedication of our entire CCHS community. We continue to navigate these evolving circumstances in the best way we know how – as “Central Together.” 8
covid - 19 response REMOTE LEARNING via Zoom Technology CCHS faculty, staff, and administration collaborated to rapidly develop and launch (mid-March) a comprehensive remote learning program for our students to maintain the continuation of education. Though many high schools transitioned to a pass/ fail grading model, Central maintained its traditional grading model based on the level of instruction still being provided through remote learning. The four-day remote learning model allowed for students and faculty to have a mid-week break (Wednesday) for decompressing, or in the faculty’s case, organizing for the remainder of the week. This fall, CCHS started the academic year in a Hybrid Live Instruction model. A COVID-19 Web Resource Knowing how difficult time away from campus has been on our students, CCHS developed Raider ReConnect – a way At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, our BeWell to virtually provide student life experiences for students website was developed to provide up-to-date COVID- to stay connected to campus and to each other throughout related information. Our entire CCHS community had the pandemic. Whether it is a virtual coffeehouse, film access to tips on staying healthy, important information festival, cooking lessons, trick shot competition or faculty from federal and state agencies, remote learning schedules, check-ins from home, every program is aimed to comfort and much more. Since June, our “Return to Campus” and support our students during this trying time. website (centralcatholic.net/returntocampus) has served as the main informational resource for families. DAILY From mid-March through late April, CCHS students, parents, faculty, and staff received daily updates sharing important COVID-related information including Communication new federal or state guidelines, announcements on CCHS event postponements, remote learning schedules, and information on upcoming virtual events such as Town Halls via Zoom, wellness webinars, and school and college counseling support. The CCHS administration continues to update students and their families through regular communications and our Return to Campus website.
Emblem Fall 2020 VOLUNTEERING at Grace Food Pantry (Everett, MA) While donning a mask and gloves amid the COVID-19 pandemic, CCHS senior Nicholas Mazzie ’21, a student-athlete (football, track, and lacrosse) and member of the National Honor Society, volunteered at the Grace Food Pantry in Everett, MA. Nick typically volunteers at the food pantry every month with his father, Steven, and sister, Gabriella, and they didn’t let the virus stop their dedication to the “least favored.” “At Central Catholic we always talk about taking care of those who are the least favored and in need,” said Nick. “I love the Nicholas Mazzie ’21 feeling of helping people and I genuinely care about those in need. I am lucky enough to be in a place where I do not have “I helped unload the trucks filled with food, bagged different to worry about my next meal. The people we are serving were foods, helped carry bags to cars, helped to break down all already struggling enough and now this health crisis has put the boxes, and cleaned up,” said Nick. “At the end of the day, people out of work and now many of them have no income.” there is nothing better than knowing you just helped hundreds Usually the food pantry is once a month, but due to the of people in need.” ‘‘ pandemic, the pantry increased its hours to serve as many people as possible. I am just trying to do my part in making the world a better place. ‘‘ 3D MASK MAKING for Our Medical Heroes CCHS student, Caleb Scotch ’23, used his 3D printer at home for more than making models. He and his family decided to make plastic masks with his specialized printer to help those who needed supplies amid the peak of the COVID-19 crisis. “My parents and I saw that we could make 3D print masks to help people, and so we started to do so with the 3D printer Caleb Scotch ’23 making masks I have in my workshop,” said Caleb. “We knew we could help people using a special piece of technology that not many people have access to.” Another CCHS 3D model maker, Molly Teece ’17, started an initiative that provided hundreds of items of protective equipment, including masks, face shields, and “ear-savers,” to COVID-19 first responders. Molly is the co-founder and co-president of the 3D Printing Club at UMass Lowell, where she is a polymer/plastics engineering major. Under Molly's leadership, the 3D Printing Club has donated materials to Boston Children’s Hospital, Lowell General Hospital, Mass. General Hospital, and St. Joseph Hospital. Molly Teece ’17

Emblem Fall 2020 2020 SHINING STARS 2020 The Central Catholic community celebrates every student for their individual goals and accomplishments throughout their Raider experience. The Class of 2020 certainly didn’t disappoint, providing a variety of inspirational academic, athletic, extracurricular and faith-filled legacies for us to cherish, especially through these unique times. The following individuals represent just a cross-section of our most recent graduates, but they speak to the motivation, kindness and solidarity of the Class of 2020. SEAN VUMBACO ’20 VALEDICTORIAN Hometown: Andover, MA College/University: Northeastern University (MA) Major: Electrical Engineering Scholarships: Dean's Scholarship Activities at CCHS: Baseball; Track and Field; Tennis; National Honors Society; Student Ambassadors; Ski and Snowboard Club; Concert, Jazz, and Liturgy Band. Career Goals: Aspiring Small Business Owner – “I'd like to combine business and engineering in a meaningful way.” Reflections on CCHS: “During my time at CCHS, I discovered a lot about my character that I established through interactions with not just other Central students, but much of the Central faculty. I not only settled on particular tastes in music or what kinds of activities I like to do, but also what kind of people I want to be like and what kind of values I want to have as I become an adult.” Reflections from Quarantine: “This time made me realize how much we really relied on each other and appreciated each other's presence. Even with the hardships presented by the pandemic, I am incredibly grateful to all the healthcare workers who face unimaginable risks right now, and my heart goes out to anyone affected by the virus in terms of health, finances or social isolation.” 16
shining stars MIA HAYNES ’20 CO-SALUTATORIAN Hometown: Salem, NH College/University: University of Connecticut (CT) Major: Biomedical Engineering Scholarships: Academic Excellence Scholarship Activities at CCHS: Swim and Dive; Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field. Career Goals: Aspiring Orthopedic Surgeon – “After obtaining my undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, I plan to go to medical school. I also am interested in prosthetic development and design and with a degree in biomedical engineering on the premed track, I feel that I can use my skills in the medical field, in the operating room, and with patients.” Reflections on CCHS: “Central has prepared me for the future both academically and as a person. Over my four years at CCHS, I have taken many honors and AP classes which taught me critical thinking and writing skills, and the study habits necessary to succeed in college. Beyond the classroom, CCHS has shaped me into a better person who values respect, kindness towards others, and how to be accepting of everyone. Through many opportunities at Central, I have completed over 120 community service hours, and for me, volunteering is about improving the lives of those around me.” Reflections from Quarantine: “My time in quarantine gave me a lot of time to pursue my artistic endeavors. I started to play the piano more, and I worked with my music teacher to branch out into singing as well. I enjoyed spending time with my family, especially since I'm attending college this fall.” SURABHI KEESARA ’20 CO-SALUTATORIAN Hometown: Tewksbury, MA College/University: Northeastern University (MA) Major: Computer Science and Mathematics Scholarships: Dean's Scholarship Activities at CCHS: Cross Country; Indoor and Outdoor Distance Track; Student Ambassadors; Band; Student Alumni Association; Coding Club; Camp Champ; Encounter; Catwalk4Cancer; National Honors Society. Career Goals: Aspiring Computer Data Science Professional – “My research project junior year allowed me to analyze data about school security and draw conclusions about ways to prevent gun violence, so research-based careers definitely appeal to me.” Reflections on CCHS: “Central has given me an appreciation for what a good work ethic can lead to. I’ve learned to make the most of my time and am ready to take on new challenges in college. Another important concept that Central has taught me has to do with diversity of thought, and that the best way to develop my own ideas and opinions is by lending an ear to what other people have to say. I can proudly say that I am more confident in my opinions now than I was four years ago.” Reflections from Quarantine: “This experience has made me appreciate spending time with others so much more. I spent a lot of time with my family, from playing cards to cooking new foods, and found myself appreciating every minute of my day.” 17
Emblem Fall 2020 MAXWELL BELAND ’20 Hometown: Pelham, NH College/University: Merrimack College (MA) Major: International Studies and Political Science Scholarships: Merrimack College Merit Scholarship Activities at CCHS: Cross Country; Indoor and Outdoor Track; Student Council; Student Alumni Association; Student Ambassadors; Campus Ministry; Retreat and Camp Champ Leader; Project Rebuild Career Goals: Aspiring Political Leader – “I would love to get involved in politics, specifically the State Department, the Senate, or the United Nations.” Reflections on CCHS: “While at Central, I learned that if you love what you’re doing, it doesn't feel like work. No matter how much homework I had, no matter how long my run was, no matter how much we had to plan for a pep rally, I always found myself loving it, even if it was difficult.” Reflections from Quarantine: “This time in quarantine really put a lot of things in perspective for me. I took for granted the day-to-day interactions at school and home, so when I lost them, I felt kind of empty. That being said, I spent a lot of time with my family and friends, and it affirmed the positivity and strength of the Central community in the face of adversity.” QUENTIN COLLINS ’20 Hometown: Methuen, MA College/University: Worcester Polytechnic Institute (MA) Major: Aerospace Engineering Scholarships: WPI Presidential Scholarship Activities at CCHS: Jazz and Concert Bands; Theatre Guild. Career Goals: Aspiring Astronaut – “I am going to work toward a five-year Master's degree, and I'd like to eventually enter an astronaut program.” Reflections on CCHS: “I have made many unforgettable memories at Central, but my time in Theatre Guild and the friendships I forged there will last a long time. CCHS taught me the importance of fully integrating oneself in your community, and I've seen much mental and social growth because of my experience. I truly cherish the moments I have shared with every member of my class and school community.” Reflections from Quarantine: “I have been blown away by the ability of people to find new ways to connect that are still meaningful, providing comfort to any of us who may feel isolated.” DINAMARY COMPRES ’20 Hometown: Lawrence, MA College/University: Johns Hopkins University (MD) Major: TBD Activities at CCHS: SCOPE; Yearbook; Theatre Guild; National Honor Society; Student Alumni Association; Art Club; Marist Mentors; Student Ambassadors. Career Goals: Aspiring Artist and Scientist – “I love art and I love science and math. Ideally, I would like a job that involves all of that.” Reflections on CCHS: “My fondest memory at CCHS was during the first Diversity Day in 2019. It was a very ambitious task planned and executed by SCOPE and that entire day I was so grateful to be a part of this community. Being at Central taught me how to believe in myself and my worth. I have been surrounded by extremely supportive people and I will always be grateful they helped me flourish and understand what I am truly capable of.” Reflections from Quarantine: “Quarantine definitely had some blessings in disguise. It is particularly emotional for my family, because we are very close and we were in denial about me leaving for college. Quarantine gave us a lot of time to bond and spend time together.”

Career Goals: Aspiring Investment Banker – “I recently joined the Investment Club at Boston College, as I am interested in pursuing a career in Investment Banking or Hedge Fund Portfolio Management.” Reflections on CCHS: “Central Catholic prepared me very well for the rigorous academics at Boston College, and helped me build my time management skills, showing me how to balance my academic and social life. I look at Central as an extension of my family! I built lifelong friendships and everyone really encourages you to be yourself..” Reflections from Quarantine: “During quarantine, I definitely enjoyed the time I spent with my family and eating home cooked meals. I would like to do something along the lines of data science.” Reflections on CCHS: “After all my time at Central Catholic, I have learned the importance of managing time. With AP classes, sports, and friendships, managing time and effort was crucial. I have also learned that getting the highest marks is not the only important thing about school. Building relationships with friends and having fun is also important too. Life shouldn’t all be work, all the time.” Reflections from Quarantine: “I had generous amounts of time to spend with family and also talk with friends. I was able to connect with them because quarantine removed some of the busyness of life.” ABIGAIL SULLIVAN ’20 Hometown: Haverhill, MA College/University: United States Naval Academy (MD) Major: Political Science, minor in Nuclear Engineering Scholarships: USNA offers full scholarship in exchange for serving five years in the military after graduation. Career Goals: Aspiring Surface Warfare Officer for U.S. Navy – “I’m hoping to work on an aircraft carrier, planning and coordinating the air, submarine, and surface ship defense.” Reflections on CCHS: “The most valuable thing I’ve learned at Central is to never be afraid to try – you’ll never know what’ll happen unless you do. I’ve learned how to direct my energy into the things that matter most to me, and it showed me how to be proud of myself, while working to achieve my goals. Central really taught me how to focus, and how to bring my character and passion into the things in life that are important to me.” Reflections from Quarantine: “I got to spend a lot more time with my family during quarantine, which is definitely a positive, especially where I was leaving for college in the middle of the summer. It was really nice to be able to spend time with them, and that they were able to stay healthy." 19

Emblem Fall 2020 Giving continued... PLANNED GIVING Have you created your Central Legacy? Consider becoming a member of the Central Catholic Legacy Society, which recognizes donors who have expressed their desire to provide a bequest or other testamentary gift to Central through their will, trust, WAYS beneficiary designation, or other estate-planning vehicle. By including CCHS in your estate plans, you make a lasting impact for our students. Your support will provide opportunities for the young to GIVE men and women we serve to thrive academically, mature spiritually, grow socially and to engage in the Catholic intellectual tradition. You can also enjoy tax benefits that come with gift planning and feel good knowing that your support will make a difference for years to come. To learn more, visit our website at plannedgiving.centralcatholic.net or contact David Erwin, Chief Advancement Officer, at (978) 682-0260 ext. 656 or derwin@centralcatholic.net. The goal is to always provide as many students with a Central Catholic education as possible. ENDOWMENT GIVING The long-term success of the mission of Central Catholic rests with visionary individuals who establish a permanently named endowed fund. Their support for deserving students offers much needed financial assistance, enhances academic programs, and provides up-to-date faculty professional development opportunities. These named endowed funds can be established using cash, securities, real estate, or through an irrevocable planned gift or bequest in your will naming CCHS as the beneficiary or by a combination of these giving options. Many donors start a named endowed fund early so that they can witness growth and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing their fund benefit others, adding to it periodically and through a final provision in their estate. Some even encourage family members, friends, and colleagues to become involved by contributing to their fund. A fund becomes permanently endowed when it reaches $25,000. This can be made as a one-time gift or payable over a designated period of time. To learn more about how to establish an endowment fund, please contact the Advancement Office at (978) 682-0260 ext. 656 or derwin@centralcatholic.net. 22
