https://www.nomos-shop.de/isbn/978-3-8487-7094-6 Acknowledgments This edited volume results from the research-based professionalization project “Between Stability and Transformation: Regional and Trans- national Cooperation in Central Asia and between Central Asia and Eu- rope.” The project was funded by Volkswagen Foundation and ran from 2016 to 2019. It was directed by Prof. Dr. Christoph Schuck together with Dr. Steve Schlegel from TU Dortmund University and Prof. Dr. Andreas Vasilache together with Dr. Chiara Pierobon from Bielefeld University. Its main goal was to foster social science capacities in Central Asia via research-oriented professionalization and training measures in the field of regional and interregional studies. In addition, the consolidation and fur- ther enlargement of the cooperation network of young and senior re- searchers from Central Asia and Germany/Europe was supported. The project built on and directly followed the previous project “Analyz- ing Patterns of Regional and Interregional Cooperation: Central Asia, its Neighboring Countries, and Europe” (2012–2015), also funded by Volks- wagen Foundation. It consisted of three separate, but interrelated compo- nents: In September 2017, the international summer school “Regional Cooperation: Approaches from Central Asia and Europe” took place at the OSCE Academy in Bishkek. One year later the seminar-series “Sustainable Development: Regional and Interregional Cooperation in Central Asia” was organized at the German-Kazakh University in Almaty in July and September 2018. The project’s third and final component was conducted as an international conference entitled “Central Asian Security in the Current World Disorder: Challenges and Opportunities” that was held in Almaty in September 2019. This book represents the result of the intense cooperation and academic exchange which took place in this framework. The inter- and multidisciplinary approach of the project is mirrored in the diversity of perspectives and points of view collected in the chapters of this volume. The whole project would have not been the same without a multitude of partners, whom we owe our gratitude: First, we want to thank the German-Kazakh University in Almaty (Kazakhstan) and the OSCE Academy in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) for being such reliable partners. Special thanks go to Dr. Markus Kaiser, former rec- tor of the German-Kazakh-University, Dr. Serik Beimenbetov, vice rector for research and transfer of the German-Kazakh-University, and Dr. 5 © NOMOS Verlagsgesellschaft. https://www.nomos-shop.de/isbn/978-3-8487-7094-6 Acknowledgments Alexander Wolters, director of the OSCE Academy. For generous hospitali- ty and friendly cooperation, undoubtedly representing sine qua non condi- tions for the successful conduction of our research-capacity building activi- ties in the region, we want to thank all members of staff working at these institutions. In this context, special thanks for their support go to all with- out whom the organization of the activities would not have been possible, namely to Dr. Zarina Adambussinova, Svetlana Dzardanova, Victoria Orazova, Dr. Kathrin Rucktäschel, and Akbota Saduakassova. Moreover, we are very grateful to the lecturers, researchers, and partici- pants of all three project activities for their insightful presentations, various perspectives, and very lively discussions. Special thanks must be ex- tended to the keynote speakers Prof. Dr. Rustam Burnashev, Dr. Anna Gussarova, Prof. Dr. Sebastien Peyrouse, Prof. Dr. Dietrich Schmidt-Vogt, and Mrs. Saltanat Zhakenova. Furthermore, we are very thankful to all the anonymous reviewers of this book who found time to provide their comments and suggestions, even in the difficult times of COVID-19. We also thank Leonie Streckert for her support in the editing process as well as all colleagues from Biele- feld University and TU Dortmund University for their helpful feedback, including the faculty management units and all the members at both uni- versities that supported the project. Many thanks go to the Volkswagen Foundation for its continuous gen- erous support without which neither the project nor this publication would have been possible. We are confident that over the years we have accomplished the task of laying the groundwork for sustainable cooperation. A freshly started, new Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, funded by Volkswagen Foundation, will support several participants of this project even further. Our hope for the future is that opportunities for German and European scholars interest- ed in engaging with Central Asia to increase their expertise on this region will continue to be available and that the research network of young scholars and experts from Central Asia and Germany/Europe will grow further.
