Virtual Career Fairs – 8 Tips to Prepare Virtual Career Fairs can be a fulfilling addition to your holistic job search. These types of career fairs are becoming increasingly popular due to the fact that they save employers time and money and increase the geographic diversity of attendees, all while utilizing cutting edge technologies to appeal to the modern job searcher. They also benefit the job searcher who can reduce travel costs and reach a greater number of employers in a shorter time period. These novel fairs do take practice for even the most tech savvy job searchers. Many websites will tell you that all you need for participation in a Virtual Career Fair is a reliable Internet connection and a CV. Even though the platform may reduce the time needed for packing, travel, and parking you must still prepare and do your homework. Here are eight important tips for preparing for a Virtual Career Fair: 1. UPDATE YOUR CV Remember that your CV should be clean, concise and up to date. Have a digital copy ready to submit online to recruiters and hiring managers. Make sure to have your CV in PDF form to avoid any digital re-formatting issue. 9
2. RESEARCH COMPANIES Prior to the Virtual Career Fair, access the list of employers and pick five companies that interest you most and another five that may be a second tier interest. Research these companies thoroughly and effectively through resources in addition to company websites. Use online newspapers, business journals, LinkedIn, and social media. This will help guide your inquiries and allow you to highlight your related skills. 3. CREATE A CALENDAR REMINDER When you do not have to coordinate your travel, a Virtual event can slip your mind. Set calendar reminders for the day before and two hours before. 4. PREPARE YOUR INTRODUCTION Prepare an introduction about your education, skills and future goals. Additionally, have a digital copy available to pin to your CV digitally. 5. DRESS APPROPRIATELY Even though you will not be traveling to meet employers, dress appropriately, and look well-groomed for a video interview. 6. HAVE YOUR PAPERWORK IN ORDER AND TEST YOUR INTERNET AND VIDEO CONNECTIONS Have your CV and any other documents you may need uploaded and available on your computer desktop for easy access. Ensure that your Internet connection is functioning and that your audio/video is working properly if you will be video interviewing. 7. KEEP ORGANIZED Organize your company information and your contact information. Create a spreadsheet or chart where you can easily input information about the connections you make or the companies to which you submitted your CV. 8. SEND THANK YOU NOTES Send thank you emails to all individuals that you made contact with and thank them for their time. WORK READINESS PROGRAMME WORKSHOPS: STUDENT FEEDBACK The aim of the PsyCaD Career Work Readiness Programme (WRP) Workshops is to assist University of Johannesburg students in preparing for the world of work beyond their academics. Our mandate as career consultants is to equip our students with the necessary skills required to succeed in the world of work. Acquiring academic knowledge is important but that knowledge only constitutes half of the ability to be effective in the workplace. Topics that are covered in our WRP workshops range from knowing the basics of communicating on the phone, to effectivity working in a team and managing conflict. Below is feedback from our students on their experiences of the WRP workshops: “Please keep up the “Wow! The Interview “I enjoyed listening to good work. Thank you Skills workshop was this presentation.” for helping us.” educational.” “The presenter was “The session was well organised and “I would like more very informative and understood the workshops.” effective.” content well.” “This CV Writing “This was very “Thank you for this presentation was meaningful and information.” liberating!” interesting.” Article Written By: Ms. Lucy Chirwa, PsyCaD Career Services: Counselling Psychologist 12

Learning, reimagined! According to recent trends, one of the most valuable skills an applicant can showcase on their CV is evidence of continued learning. Whether it is learning a new language, attending a workshop or signing up for a short course, upskilling is a major job trend! This, however, does not need to be a time-consuming or tiresome task – simply look for opportunities that align to your career goals and vision. To shed some light on this, we chat to Ms Simone Carter, the Course Coordinator for Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR – a new, fully online, future-focused short learning programme at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). PsyCaD: Hi Simone, thank you for taking the time to chat to us! We are excited to hear more about the course you coordinate. Can you tell us a little bit about it? Simone: Hi PsyCaD team, sure! Thank you for having me. I am incredibly excited to be the Course Coordinator for Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR – UJ’s newest fully online short learning programme housed within the Division of Academic Development and Support (ADS). Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR introduces students to artificial intelligence (AI), its applications, and its implications for society and the future of work in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). This non-technical short learning programme is self-paced and consists of eight (8) units aimed to enable students to develop a basic understanding of a world with AI. Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR is one of two fully online short learning programmes offered by ADS, with African Insights – an online short learning programme introduced by UJ in 2017 – being the second programme for first-year students to choose from. African Insights introduces students to the intellectual traditions and debates in Africa. Both programmes are exciting and relevant, and students are encouraged to complete both programmes during the duration of the undergraduate programme for which they are registered. Both programmes bear no additional fee for students. The introduction of Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR affirms UJ’s endeavours to prepare students for the 4IR, given the institution’s focus as a ‘University of the 14
21st century’ and beyond. Initially, this programme simply targeted a first-year audience, but given the relevance of the content, and the importance of preparing our continent for the 4IR, this programme has been opened to the entire UJ community. Based on the feedback we have received thus far, we know that we made the right decision to empower our entire workforce. PsyCaD: Upon completion of this course, what kind of skills will one have gained? Simone: Over the past few years, UJ has intensified its outreach with full-time and fully online short learning programmes to help upskill and reskill people for the current and future jobs. This is in line with UJ’s global excellence and stature (GES) 4.0 strategic objective underpinned by the 4IR. This short learning programme enables our youth to explore and contribute towards 4IR-related conversations and technologies. Essentially, our students must have a basic understanding of a world with AI in order to use it effectively. According to Professor Rory Ryan, Executive Director: ADS, “We’re in the midst of a revolution, the 4IR, and this has been engendered by machine learning and the impact that this will have on the world of work and everything involved in socio-economic and private life. It’s important for all of our students to be aware of the ways in which this is going to impact them directly as individuals, but also in the way that they prepare for the future and their future participation in the economy”. Upon completion of Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR, students will be able to apply knowledge of AI in the 4IR to their emerging knowledge domains, and they will have reflected on their role in a world that is being transformed by AI-driven technologies. It is imperative that our students understand where they fit into the industrial changes that accompany the 4IR. In detail, students will be able to: 1. Develop an understanding of the 4IR and automation. 2. Understand the evolution of AI. 3. Discuss foundational concepts and techniques of AI and their application to real-life problems. 4. Explore advances in AI research, application and commercialisation in the United States and the West. 5. Explore advances in AI research, application and commercialisation in China. 6. Unpack the implications of AI for the future of the world of work. 7. Be aware of social and ethical considerations of AI technology. 8. Reflect on the future of AI for society. Based on the abovementioned content, as well as the nature of the module, students will have a choice over where they learn, and at the times and pace that suits them. Thus, students will need to be disciplined enough to learn without traditional instruction, as well as adopt a reflective, curious, growth mindset as they navigate the course in line with their chosen career path. 15
PsyCaD: Are these skills specific to a particular industry, or can they be transferable to various work environments? Simone: Careful consideration and consultative review processes were undertaken in the development of this short learning programme in order to ensure that what students would take from this learning experience would enable them to be agile in absolutely any environment. This is seen in our discussion boards, which at times, have been discipline-specific type topics, but still engaging and of interest if you are not situated within that particular field. To give you an example, we have course discussion boards on AI and commerce, AI and mathematics education, how the 4IR will impact your future job, and so on. The beauty in such a far-ranging, dynamic short learning programme is that students are encouraged to reflect on their own paths while navigating the course content, thus enabling them to become forward-thinking within the particular environments in which they find themselves. Being able to adapt to e-learning which is dependent entirely on your own work ethic speaks volumes. PsyCaD: How long does it take to complete this course and what kind of certification does one receive? Simone: Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR is a self-paced module that places emphasis on the autonomy of the student, who is responsible for his or her progress through the content of the course. There are no lectures to attend. Essentially, work on your own terms, at the times and speeds that are most convenient for you! However, we have had students who completed the programme in 3 days, and some over the course of 3 weeks. A digital certificate will be issued on successful completion which may be viewed and shared with third parties or possible employers through the UJ Digital Certificate platform. For currently-registered students, completion of the programme will also reflect on the top of the student’s academic transcript as an award titled ‘Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR (SLP)’. PsyCaD: How does one access this course? Simone: Simply stated, if you are a UJ student or staff member all you need to do is log in to uLink and follow a few easy-to-follow steps listed below: Step 1: Log in to uLink – https://ulink.uj.ac.za/ For students, use your student number to sign in. For staff members, use your username to sign in. Step 2: Go to ‘Online Courses’ on the homepage. 16
Step 3: Explore ‘African Insights’ or ‘Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR’. Step 4: Register for the course by clicking on ‘register’ at the bottom on the page. Step 5: Await an email from uLink which will provide instructions on how to access the course. It is that easy! For any application and/or academic enquiries, contact me on scarter@uj.ac.za or our course email address ai4ir@uj.ac.za. PsyCaD: What advice would you offer with regard to upskilling within the 4IR? Simone: Continuous, lifelong learning is essential for the 4IR, and is not limited to studying towards a formal qualification, but also seizing informal, inclusive, contemporary learning opportunities such as this one. Naturally, I am a bit biased, but in our ever-changing world, the opportunity to continuously learn and develop yourself is not something that should be taken lightly, as you will be required to be adaptable, agile, as well as be able to easily align with shifting business demands – even though such demands may not be within your scope of knowledge or comfort zone. I suggest the following tips: 1. Take responsibility for your learning and future job. You simply need one hour per day to learn something new. Do not tell yourself that you cannot do something, or that you do not have enough time. We make time for what we are interested in! You are responsible for preparing yourself for your future job. 2. Seize free opportunities at your academic institution. Trust me, once you are out the university system, you will regret not grabbing the free opportunities and resources to upskill yourself, especially 4IR-focused opportunities! 3. Get used to online and self-paced learning. Remote working and learning is a big part of the gig economy – where temporary positions are common and organisations hire independent workers for short-term tasks. The more agile and adaptable you are, the more successful you will be in contract roles. The right mindset and skills are key to a flexible life filled with both unpredictability and possibility. 4. Reimagine the 4IR as an opportunity to re-align your efforts and identify opportunities, rather than threats. Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR promotes cross-cultural education and connectivity as we bring together the UJ community to join the UJ4IR movement! See you in the course. PsyCaD: Thank you for sharing this insightful information with us! Interview conducted by: Ms. Raeesa Mayet, PsyCaD Career Services: Psychometrist 17
6 TIPS ON HOW TO NAVIGATE VIRTUAL WORKING ENVIRONMENTS Whether you’re studying or working in an online environment, the shift from a physical space to a virtual space can be quite an adjustment. It does however provide the platform to think outside the box, embrace our creativity and grow our skillsets. 1. “My space and me” - Start out by identifying a comfortable space to work from. Don’t be afraid to move things around to ensure that you have good lighting, and that the spot is free from unnecessary distractions. Add things like positive sayings and vision boards to your space to enhance motivation and make the space feel more personable. 2. “Routine on repeat” – As tedious as schedules may seem, they are key to ensuring healthy practices within a virtual workspace. Design a realistic schedule for things like online meetings or classes, completing tasks and relaxation. Maintaining a balance between work and play is important to ensure you do not experience burnout or lose productivity. Remember, your schedule should work for you, so don’t be afraid to reevaluate and rework it when necessary! 3. “#TechSavvy” – Use this opportunity to enhance your skillset. Learn how to use new online platforms to communicate with your colleagues and classmates. Look for collaborative technologies that can be incorporated into processes to make teamwork more manageable. This will foster a new sense of confidence and keep the lines of communication open. 4. “Smile, you’re on camera” – At first, having to communicate virtually may seem daunting as you awkwardly stare at yourself (and others) on your laptop screen. When engaging in meetings, ensure that you are appropriately dressed and that your camera is in an appropriate position. This means that your video should neither be too close or too far from your face. 5. “Security is a priority” – Working in a virtual space means that extra care should be taken when it comes to protecting confidential information and files, as well as passwords and login details. Remember, your home network may not always be as secure as that of your workplace or institution. Be mindful of this and put necessary measures in place. 6. “Grow a positiviTREE” – Working in a virtual space has many advantages. If managed efficiently, you can be left with spare time to focus on things like self-reflection and personal growth. Make a list of positive things you have always wanted to do or try. Use your downtime to exercise, take a short course or even learn a new language! Work is no longer confined to a physical office. Technology has completely liberated knowledge work from a physical office. Physical offices are now considered luxuries not necessities. This has been proven during the Covid-19 pandemic. Companies are creating “offices in the cloud” which teams go to work in by logging in from anywhere, as long as they have an internet connection. No commutes required. A new breed of company has emerged, known as a fully distributed company, meaning it has no physical office. Some examples of these are Automattic, GitLab, InVision and Zapier each employing hundreds of people spread out around the globe, meeting online to work. Prior to the pandemic, already more than 2,500 companies work this way. As reports indicate, many more companies are now considering making this their preferred way of working as economies open up again post-Covid-19. Imagine you could be working at one of these and be living anywhere in the world! Obviously to be an effective virtual employee requires that you have the digital literacy and fluency to be able to work efficiently with people that are not with you in-person. “Digital Literacy” has several competencies that make up the term, such as ICT Literacy, Information Literacy, Media Literacy, Online Career & Identity Managment and, very importantly, the ability to Communicate and Collaborate virtually. Let’s focus on this last skill for a moment. One of the key elements of an “office in the cloud” is for everyone working in one, to be able to communicate and collaborate digitally. This normally entails using cloud based tools, like Slack, Facebook Workplace, Microsoft Teams and Zoom. Being an effective communicator, i.e. being able to convey your thoughts and ideas virtually, is extremely important. You will do this using the written word, pictures and video. So, you need to be skilled at writing so that you are able to convey emotion as well as intent, often accomplished with the strategic use of emojis, especially in a Slack channel! But it doesn’t end there. Video communication skills are just as essential, since video is relied on heavily by distributed teams. Make it your goal to become extremely comfortable on camera so that you can communicate naturally. Becoming a skilled virtual worker is a great asset given the rapid evolution of the modern workplace. Written By: Mr. Peter du Toit, Founder FutureWork IQ and Virtual Work Skills Course Instructor 25
SKILL GAP 2020: 5 SOFT SKILLS AND 10 HARD SKILLS COMPANIES NEED NOW What are the most critical soft and hard skills that organizations are hiring for and training for in 2020? In the recently released LinkedIn Learning 2020 Workplace Learning Report, LinkedIn analyzed data from 660+ million professionals and 20+ million jobs to map the 15 most in-demand skills. More specifically, they looked at the skills that are in demand relative to the supply of people who have those skills—in other words, the skill gap. THE TOP SOFT SKILLS IDENTIFIED WERE: 1. Creativity: how to generate original ideas and solutions. 2. Persuasion: convincing others to support your ideas, buy your solutions, or to take action. 3. Collaboration: able to work on a team and unlock synergies towards a common goal. 4. Adaptability: thriving in change and uncertainty. 5. Emotional intelligence: able to perceive and understand the emotions of yourself and others and to modulate your own natural emotions. What got dropped from last year’s list? More tactical skills like time management, although it’s worth noting that this research was done prior to the global pandemic. 26
THE TOP HARD SKILLS ARE: 1. Blockchain: a novel way to securely store, validate, authorize, and move digital assets across the internet. 2. Cloud computing: design, delivery, and maintenance of cloud architecture on platforms like AWS and Azure. 3. Analytical reasoning: able to understand data and generate conclusions based on analysis. 4. Artificial intelligence: embodying AI, machine learning and natural language processing. 5. UX design: conducting research and designing software and other products to maximize the “user experience” 6. Business analysis: able to work with data for analysis, problem-solving, and presentations. 7. Affiliate marketing: the hottest new hard skill is about marketing through others’ trusted channels. 8. Sales: perhaps both a hard skill and a soft skill as sales involves persuasion, but for a specific commercial end in mind. 9. Scientific computing: able to apply statistical and analytical approaches to large data sets using programs like Python, and MATLAB. 10. Video production: mobile video is quickly becoming the dominant form of all communication and companies are fighting to create effective digital video assets. Most notable on the list of hard skills was blockchain technology which is both brand new to the top ten list and lands in the number one position. Whether you are looking to advance your career, or you’re a learning and development professional seeking to fill your company’s skill gaps, these lists are a great way to conduct an informal audit and begin to skill up in the area of your gaps.
