Hill is a Virginia native, born and raised in Franklin County, and has worked in Roanoke as a CMA since 2014. CMAs are healthcare professionals who support the work of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and others, usually in a clinic setting. CMAs can be used in a variety of healthcare settings, from eye doctors to dentistry, in both administrative and clinical capacities. Hill says the demand for CMAs is huge because they have a diversified skill set. CMAs are needed absolutely everywhere in the healthcare industry, so students can rest assured they will have no problem getting a job once they get certified, and often students are employed even before certification! According to Hill, a huge benefit of the CMA program at Virginia Western is that it is completed in just 14 weeks. Students gain certification quickly, by top-notch instructors with real-world experience, and, because of the vast hands-on experience they receive, they are fully prepared to go to work and start earning. Another benefit of Virginia Western’s School of Career and Corporate Training programs is that interested students can easily expand their knowledge base and gain additional certifications in a variety of areas such as EKG Technician. Hill has been with the School of Career and Corporate Training since 2018. She says “I love teaching individuals that have a passion for helping others. I feel extremely proud when I see our CMA students experiencing great success at companies like Carilion Clinic, LewisGale Medical Center, Vistar Eye Center, urgent care clinics, dental offices, private practices etc.” There is a huge demand, especially right now, for medical assistants. 6 Virginia Western Career & Corporate Training | SPRING 2022
