SEPT/OCTOBER 2020 Order Form and Price List Moorlands DIPPED Candles Ltd Unit 1E, Skelgillside Workshops, Nenthead Road, Alston, Cumbria CA9 3TR Web: www.moorlands-candles.co.uk Email: sales@moorlands-candles.co.uk Tel: (01434) 382738 Company No. 11207189 VAT No. 533 5590 43 Amid the confusion of covid we’ve had days bringing the last warmth of summer. Downy willow herb seeds blow about and hundreds of butterflies were flitting around my buddleia bush in the sunshine, as I took sugar syrup to feed the 2 new bee colonies I’ve acquired through swarms. The other hives provided about 60 jars of honey this year. Then I left to cycle to my favourite pool along the Tyne for a dip, the water refreshingly cool, but the sun still strong enough to dry out on the rocky bank. Voles have been prolific this summer, starting on pea seedlings and enjoying a late summer feast of most of the carrots and tatties through persistent tunnelling. The greenhouse grown tomatoes are a decent crop, and ripening at last. No apples have set this year on the old boskop tree, but with NATURE FLOURISHES IN LOCKDOWN nature undisturbed through lockdown, both thrushes and flycatchers built nests and raised two clutches in it. I’ve made changes to the heart of my house this summer, replacing the Rayburn, fuelled partly by locally mined anthracite, with air source heat pump central heating and a wood burner with an oven to bake bread in. It should reduce the dust and fumes, and lower my carbon footprint, but I’ll know after the winter. It’s 6 months now since we went into lockdown. Since then alcohol consumption has increased along with anxiety and depression. People living alone feel more isolated, and for those in care homes with dementia, not even able to see loved ones, is life worth living? Others kept waiting for diagnosis and treatment are often fearful about going into hospital. We were promised a world beating track and trace system, and all we’ve got is a shambles. Now there’s a rule of six, and most have been compliant so far, but since pubs and restaurants were encouraged to open again and schools returned Covid has started to come back, and one can feel how tired people are at keeping to rules that are neither very clear or logical, as the Government wrestles between reviving the economy and limiting the damage of the virus. As we walk around behind masks and avoid one another life is very strange. There are positives though, as we look to neighbours needs, and the shock of the pandemic has given many of us a chance to reassess the importance of human contact relative to material things. To plan for a greener future, in the way we engage with nature, the energy we consume, transport needs and whether we really need so many goods, often made by slave labour around our planet. Change also requires world wide cooperation. Not an easy task at a time when inward looking ‘Little Englanders’ have taken control of our parliament, and are not even seriously engaging with with our European neighbours on a post ‘brexit’ future. Democracy is on hold with zoom meetings no substitute for face to face discussions, and no substitute for proper policy debate and compromise. There is turmoil at Alston Parish Councils zoom meetings, with the Chair resigning as, some power hungry Councillors wanting to tear up standing orders and targeting Chris in her other work as Parish Clerk. We are fortunate that business is picking up for us and as days shorten, we are moving into what used to be our busiest time of year. That was before we made candles for Film and Theatre, work which won’t be coming back in a hurry, leaving actors and musicians in limbo and life for the rest of us diminished. Rory has performed a couple of gigs outdoors but unless restrictions can be lifted it’s impossible to have a proper audience, with many people still hesitant of going out socialising. We would hardly of managed without our grant and money from the furlough scheme, but now we are struggling with orders, especially as we self limit to having four in the workshop through social distancing rules, but we should cope up until Christmas without the magic money tree. We are, as usual, increasing some of our prices from October. We are also discontinuing our essential oil paraffin wax range, and selling off remaining stock at a reduced price. I’d felt for many years that the best way to use essential oils was to vaporise them by heating the oil on water over a tea light, and that the effect is rather wasted burning the oil in a candle. As beeswax has become our main material for candle making, we’ll stick with that natural aroma, although that can vary quite a lot. Mostly it’s the sweetness of honey, with African wax often having a trace of the woodsmoke used to calm the bees in the tree hives. We have had Uk wax smelling of hay, probably stored in a barn, and very recently we have had a job making candles with Zambian wax with a strong tobacco like smell. We don’t generally use Chinese wax, which is cheaper, but has a chemical smell and some impurities. We wish all our customers the best in coming through and surviving this DEAL OR NO DEAL? difficult time. Ted Thompson
