AUGUST 2021 Order Form and Price List Moorlands DIPPED Candles Ltd Unit 1E, Skelgillside Workshops, Nenthead Road, Alston, Cumbria CA9 3TR Web: www.moorlands-candles.co.uk Email: sales@moorlands-candles.co.uk We’ve had some lovely sunny days lately, with a chance to socialise with friends outside again. Every year is different but it has been an odd summer so far. After a cool and wet spring came a long dry spell and carrots failed to germinate, and watering was the norm in the garden. I’m now harvesting sugar peas, and but for pesky pigeons pulling out pea plants could have had a better crop. Bees were late getting going this year, and pollination poor for early flowering fruits like blackcurrants. I am fortunate to have space for a garden, and with road verges left wild, to witness a succession of blossoms through spring and summer, from snowdrop, crocus, coltsfoot, dandelion, cowslip, hawthorn, welsh poppy, bird cherry, sweet cicely, broom, globe flower, campion, lily, water avens, nasturtium, cranesbill, sow thistle and meadowsweet. Followed by sunflower, mullein, loosestrife, sweet pea, knapweed, willow SUNFLOWER WITH BUMBLEBEE herb, golden rod, crocosmia and finally buddleia, the butterfly bush which looked dead at the end of May. It’s some years since farmers have been able to bring in such a sweet smelling hay crop in July, but it’s a more mechanised operation not involving sweaty volunteers from the community. Is it fair that others are confined in flats in towns and cities? It would be great for young people to escape from their screens and reconnect with nature and wild life. Part of all kids education should be to do with nature, planting and growing crops, as well as learning to cook, and this not limited to forest schools. With extreme heat on the west coast of America, now southern Europe, and forests of Siberia with the permafrost melting and releasing methane gas. With sudden flood events in Europe and India, we see man made global warming speeding up and running out of control. To change our habits in the timescale required is a huge challenge and well nigh impossible. Govern- ments continue to pursue economic growth, and we export a great deal of our carbon to the far east, where nearly all our con- sumer goods are manufactured. We will need to adapt our production process in the future and phase out our use of paraffin wax for making our coloured candles, but it’s not clear we‘ll be able to find a satisfactory alternative. We are still cautious com- ing out of lockdown, especially with a spate of Covid cases around the moor, including one of our worker Directors and her family. So testing is still the norm, with mask wearing for visitors to the workshop. We are weary of restrictions, and of this in- competent Governments advise but conscious of protecting the vulnerable. Another long dry spell and hot sunshine lasted through Alstons’ music festival, which this year was low key, and took place around the town, and mostly outside the pubs, due to the difficulty of investing in a costly festival infrastructure in these still uncertain times. Musicians had waited so long to get the chance to play to a live audience, and local musicians including Rory and Robin (also candlemakers) and bands who would have played at last years festival were keen to perform. There was good feedback from this years event. Simon Danby filmed some of the acts, and his videos can be viewed and listened to online. We had expected that Alston Front street would already be closed to traffic, as part of the cobbled street was reinstated. It is now from the start of August for 19 weeks, including when the cycle Tour of Britain comes through the moor on September 10th. We are quite a remote community on Alston Moor, and now a new Government reorganisation is set to divide Cumbria into two unitary authorities. Alston is to be lumped together with Barrow in Furness which is 90 miles away, and another world. We would be far better off being linked to Northumberland. Once we had a rail connection to Haltwhistle and the main line, but now Northumberland subsidise one of our only public transport bus connections to there, and most people who have their cars are not too bothered in our individualist culture. Once we had a Cottage Hospital with a maternity unit. Beds were reduced from 12 to 6, and still those recovering from surgery and those living their last days, could be cared for close to home and their loved ones. But despite heroic local campaigning, the Hospital Trust decided to close our hospital, and have a nurse led team to make home visits, and keep a couple of beds for patients in our care home at Grisdale Croft. There was also supposed to be a 24 hour minor injuries unit, but when I went with a friend Dean with a cut finger last weekend it was closed due to Covid. After Keith and Francis retired from 40 years running Alston’s ambulance, local volunteers were trained as Emergency Medical Tech- nicians by the NWAmbulance service, to keep our ambulance going as a life saving first response, but now are told they haven’t the appropriate training, training they were nev- er offered, and the service is to be disbanded, something that is the subject of ongoing protests, but will it make a difference? Because of pressure of demand, especially for beeswax we are having to reduce our stock of colours in some of the sizes in our paraffin wax range, although NOT in the standard or tree/spell sizes. After water spot problems with our usual wax, we are now dipping with a higher grade of paraffin wax costing 30% more. This, together with new trade barriers and customs duties between ‘Global Britain’ and the EU, will mean a hike in our prices in the autumn. Ted Thompson GRIM REEPER FOR OUR AMBULANCE? S
