Festival Message Apa khabar? How are you? Wow... it’s been two years since we last met in person. That’s two years of presenting Pesta Raya – Malay Festival of Arts digitally for us and two years of experiencing the festival online for you, our audience. Finally, we get to meet in person and we are truly grateful for this opportunity to once again present Pesta Raya physically at Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. Nothing beats the experience of having performers and artists in the same space and we are glad to be able to welcome you back to the centre for our 21st edition, which will take place from 26 – 29 May 2022. It is also Esplanade’s 20th anniversary this year and even as we look forward to the future, we take a moment to shine a focus on icons who have shaped our arts and entertainment scene. These include Singapore Malay music icons Jatt Ali, Hady Mirza and Sufi Rashid who will come together for FENOMENA, a one-night only concert presented under the umbrella of both Pesta Raya and PopLore – A Year of Singapore Popular Music; as well as veteran singer-songwriter Art Fazil who also marks his own milestone in a concert that celebrates the 20th anniversary of his award-winning album, Nur. At the same time, we put a spotlight on the next generation of artists who are making their mark on the scene. In the Esplanade commission, Kepaten Obor, Suhaili Safari presents a multi-disciplinary one-woman performance that is a heartfelt monologue reflecting on the ties that bind grandparents and grandchildren. In The Wrong Geng 2.0, dance artist Norhaizad Adam playfully questions themes including gender and performance in this solo work. Popular Malaysian indie band, Kugiran Masdo, will bring the swinging ’60s into Esplanade for their debut performance in Singapore. 3
And in An Evening of Dikir – Teraju Tiga, the Esplanade Concert Hall will come alive in one epic night of dikir barat. This tribute concert to Singapore’s dikir barat scene will trace the art form’s development through the years and be a celebration of the camaraderie between artists young and old. Audiences beyond our shores and those in Singapore who want to experience Pesta Raya from the comfort of your homes can be entertained by our digital screenings. These include the premiere of the film Pulang Balik by Teater Ekamatra, which we had commissioned respected Singapore film director Sanif Olek to shoot; as well as a recording of the well-received concert Tempoh by OrkeStar Trio & Djangat, which was commissioned by Esplanade and presented live as part of Pentas series in October 2021. Lastly, look forward to commissioned short films by critically-acclaimed directors from Singapore and the region. Reflecting on the journey we’ve taken and the challenges that we have been through, we are humbled to have the privilege to honour the Malay identity through myriad art forms. We thank you, our audience and supporters, for allowing us to share with you the wide variety of programmes that we had the opportunity to present over the years. We also thank The Silent Foundation for their kind support of the festival this year. How we have missed seeing you all coming through our doors, dressed up to the nines, abuzz with excitement and with such an electric energy in the air. So come on down and don’t miss the fun as we celebrate what we have overcome! Hanie Nadia Hamzah Producer, The Esplanade Co Ltd 4
Choreographer’s Message Salam everyone. In my artistic practice, I am always finding ways to put forth themes of power- play, morality and behaviourism in Malay culture. This work is one way for me to reimagine and deepen my knowledge of ronggeng Melayu as a dance form, its music, history and social functions that are rooted in Singapore. With input from researchers and collaborators, this work is my strategy to confront our society’s complicated relationship with the erasure of history, as well as the systemic structures of human labour, especially performers. Personally, as a Malay dancer, my relationship with dancing joget is filled with enjoyable memories of a call for celebration. A communal gathering specially meant to bring everyone together in a joyous mood. Reflecting on current times, communal gatherings have certainly transformed in their reduced numbers and many have introduced flexibility in cultural practices that were previously disallowed. Will there still be meaning to commune and carry out cultural practices in the coming years? Since 2021, it has been really exciting to work on this next iteration of The Wrong Geng. As this iteration was realised during the varied waves of activity of the Covid-19 pandemic, I felt it was important to consider the communicated restrictions that guide our social behaviours in our community. Thus, making it relevant to our contemporary times. This includes re-navigating the purpose of performance design and audience experience with the emphasis of wearing masks, social distancing and cashless transactions. I am grateful to Esplanade’s Pesta Raya team, especially Hanie Nadia Hamzah and Shiraz Sallim, for believing in me and giving me a chance to develop The Wrong Geng 2.0. 5
I wish to express my gratitude for the generosity of the knowledgeable creative team, skilful designers and reliable production team. They have been very supportive in shaping the experience of The Wrong Geng 2.0. I also wish to convey my appreciation to friends and family who took time to attend test run sessions to help make meaning of elements in the work. I also wish to say thank you to the team that made the earlier iteration of this performance, The Wrong Geng, which was first commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in 2018, presented under the Pentas series in the dance showcase, Joget. Thank you for believing in me: Fezhah Maznan, Susan Sentler, Bani Haykal, James Tan, Rashid Siddiq, Zaharian Osman and Hasyimah Harith. Selamat Hari Raya! Mohon maaf zahir dan batin. Norhaizad Adam 6
Researcher’s Note The first time I watched Norhaizad’s work The Wrong Geng four years ago, I was really impressed by the message he wanted to convey to the viewers. Elsewhere, I have shared that this work provides a reminder that dancing is intrinsically an activity of labour. We often focus on its aesthetics, but there is actually much more that we can learn and understand when watching a dancer perform. The question that often crosses my mind when watching Norhaizad in action is, “At what point will the dancer be considered a worker and not just a mere subject of spectacle?” It is my belief that an artist should be given proper recognition as someone with agency, who has the potential to harness a critical mind and a become a player in socio-political issues. This version premiering at Pesta Raya 2022 is no less interesting because it provides critical thoughts about the state of our reality today. Advances in technology and the Covid-19 situation have changed the way we interact and communicate across distances. Through this version, the relationship between the dancer’s labour and moral obligations is clear. What’s more, how the act of charity is a measure of one’s responsibility to the community. Indeed, these issues are relevant today and continue to be an urgently needed discussion. Dr. Noramin Farid 7
About the Work Conceptualised and performed by dance artist Norhaizad Adam, The Wrong Geng 2.0 is a solo dance performance from the perspective of the jantan joget (male dancer). Here, he negotiates the social, imaginative and affective aspects of human labour within contemporary capitalism, while posing the question: What if the role of the perempuan joget (female dancer) was undertaken by a cis-male? Historically, joget, also known as ronggeng, has been recognised for its lively beats and fast-paced rhythms. It has always been a form of music and dance that encourages interaction between male and female performers, a means of expressing flirtatious intent as well as courtship. This was particularly true for the dance halls within the entertainment parks of 1930s to 1960s Singapore. The term “wrong geng” is a play on the term ronggeng, which reflects the stigma of joget dancers as “dirty”, speculating on the contentions of Malay conservatives who may perceive joget as an erotic and titillating social past time. Today, joget has been sanitised and modernised. Currently it is practiced as a respectable Singapore Malay dance form and commonly performed at festive events such as weddings and gatherings. Equal parts playful and challenging, The Wrong Geng 2.0 confronts the myriad perspectives towards labour in dance, running parallel with Norhaizad Adam’s practice of addressing Malay identity through movement and performance. The earlier iteration of this performance, The Wrong Geng, was first commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in 2018, presented under the Pentas series in the dance showcase, Joget. (1hr, no intermission) 8

Salam semua.
Selamat Hari Raya! Mohon maaf zahir dan batin. Norhaizad Adam 16
(1jam, tanpa waktu rehat) 18
