Bronco Times [BMS site] [BMS PTSO site] [Attendance] Hello Bronco Families, We are wrapping up our first full week of in-person learning and it's been a pretty good one. Students and staff have adapted well to having over 1000+ kids on campus and the different ways that we must transition kids from place to place. We are still working through a few hiccups, but overall we've been able to maintain our protocols and continue social distancing as much as possible. Next week, we will run on the same schedule for in-person on Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri and also utilize our Remote Learning Wednesday schedule when all kids are at home. As you heard from my Connect Ed last night, we have had a few positive Covid-19 cases this week that caused some additional students due to contact tracing to be placed into quarantine. I urge parents to keep kids home from school if they have any allergy, cold, flu or Covid-19 type symptoms unless you 100% know it's not Covid- 19. We have seen a rise in students being out due to exposure on the weekend or in the evenings at soccer, baseball, dance, sleepovers, and a variety of other extracurricular activities now that things are opening up. Please make sure students are honest when filling out their daily health screener to help eliminate bringing Covid-19 to our campus. Thanks in advance for helping us keep students and staff safe from the spread of Covid-19. Car Rider line Our car rider line in the afternoon continues to get more efficient, yet the sheer number of car riders will continue to prolong wait time. I would encourage anyone who can utilize bus transportation to do so. If your student is not already assigned a bus, please contact Mrs. Meekin to request one (lindsaym.meekin@cms.k12.nc.us). You can also help by coming in from the Hough High School side on Bailey Road as the middle transition lane is a much safer way to wait in line and helps eliminate back-ups at Bailey Road and 115. Thanks for your flexibility and assistance in making our car rider line a more efficient as we move into next week. MAP Testing & EOGs Our Spring MAP Assessment in Math & Reading will be given on Wednesday, April 28 (Math) and Wednesday, May 5 (Reading). These are on Remote Learning days so students will simply attend their homeroom class through Zoom to get direction on completing their MAP Assessment on each of these two Wednesdays. No assignments will be issued on these two days, but students should utilize this time after testing to complete any missing assignments.
EOG clarity from CMS is still in process, but we do know that all students, even Remote Academy, will be expected to take the following tests in-person: Math EOG, Reading EOG, 8th Grade Science EOG, Math 1 EOC (7th & 8th), Spanish EOC. A schedule with specific test days will be sent out in the coming weeks, but families should plan for testing to begin on May 12 and run through most of the last two weeks until May 28. Camp CMS Final call for parents to sign up students for Camp CMS this summer. Please see details and the link to sign-up on the main page of the Bailey Website. This summer program is open to all students in CMS and will consist of a full day on Monday- Thursday each of the six weeks. Please remember that 8th graders will attend at Hough High School and can receive up to 4 high school credits. Only 100 students participated state-wide and we were lucky enough to have two students in the choir! Kudos to Mariana Hernandez (7th grade Honors Art Student) for placing 8th in the NC Aviation Art contest for intermediate students. The Bailey Art Teachers are very proud of her and the beautiful artwork she has created. She is a very talented young lady. Create a Great Weekend, Chad O. Thomas Principal
Happy Earth Day!!! With the beauty and warmth of spring finally here, it's easy to see all of the wonderful gifts Mother Nature has afforded us. It's no coincidence then that next Thursday, April 22nd is the 51st celebration of Earth Day! A day for all of us to take some time to appreciate, celebrate, and advocate for the planet that has given us so much. To help, here are a few interesting facts and things you can do to help give back to our one and only planet earth this spring. The date was chosen to appeal to college students. The founders of Earth Day, Senator Nelson and grad student Denis Hayes strategically selected April 22nd back in 1970 as the day for celebration to attract more college students. Not only was this age group particularly known for being politically active during the era of Vietnam and Civil Rights, but the date also fell between spring break and final exams for most universities. While it started in the U.S.A. it has since gone international. Initially only celebrated in the United States, it has since grown, and is celebrated in more than 192 countries by over one billion civic-minded supporters today. Global movement that has sparked real change. Sparked by the massive turnout of 20 million Americans during the first celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd, 1970, The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) was approved by President Richard Nixon and legislation on clean air, clean water, toxic substances, and endangered species were passed too. Furthermore, on Earth Day in 2011, 28 million trees were planted in Afghanistan for a "Plant Trees Not Bombs'' campaign. In 2012, more than 100,000 people in China rode their bikes in order to reduce CO2 emissions and highlighting the amount of pollution created by cars. So what can we do?
