BRIGHT CANISTER AND LIGHT SET INSTRUCTION MANUAL 5. Charging of the Battery Handling lithium-ion batteries requires great care. On the following pages you will find many instructions that you must follow. Incorrect interaction with lithium-ion batteries can lead to serious injury or even death. 5. 1 Preparation The battery must be removed from the canister before charging. To do this, disconnect the lamp head from the battery tank (if in use). To do this, simply use the E/O cords. The head of the battery tank is opened counterclockwise. Once you have unscrewed the canister, you can separate the battery tank from the head. That way, the charging sockets are exposed and accessible. Please, only use the provided charger to charge the battery. The use of unsuitable chargers can irreparably damage the battery. Damage caused by incorrect charging is not covered by the warranty. ©2019 SCUBA FORCE | Doc. No. 01-2021 Rev. 1 26.07.2021 Page 9 of 17
BRIGHT CANISTER AND LIGHT SET INSTRUCTION MANUAL When connecting the charger, it is important to pay attention to the correct polarity. The red cable is the positive pole. The battery also has a red label on the positive side (see photo below). Connect the charger to the battery first, before plugging the charger into the socket. The battery has an integrated electronic system (balancer). This protects the battery during the charging process and during actual use. On the head side of the battery is an LED display that provides information about the state of charge. The display consists of 5 LEDs, one LED each stands for 20% of charge. By pressing the dot, the display will be activated. In the picture on the left, all 5 LEDs are lit, which means that the battery is fully charged. Colored marks and labels help to connect the charger correctly. Red belongs to red. The charging plug and charging cable at the charger are red and belong on the side of the battery, also highlighted in red. ©2019 SCUBA FORCE | Doc. No. 01-2021 Rev. 1 26.07.2021 Page 10 of 17
BRIGHT CANISTER AND LIGHT SET INSTRUCTION MANUAL 5.2 General Notes on the Handling of Lithium-Ion Batteries 5.2.1 Hazards When Dealing with Lithium-Ion Batteries: The following risks are known: Mechanical Loads Mechanical damages can lead to internal short-circuits. The high flowing currents cause the accumulator to heat up. Plastic housings may melt and catch fire. Under certain circumstances, a mechanical defect may not be immediately recognizable. An internal short- circuit may still occur even a long time after the mechanical defect. Chemical Reactions Lithium is a highly reactive metal. Although it is only present as a chemical compound in lithium batteries, the components of a Li-ion battery are often highly flammable. Compensatory reactions during overcharging, such as the decomposition of water into oxyhydrogen gas like in other batteries, are not possible. Li-ion batteries are hermetically sealed. Nevertheless, they should not be immersed in water, especially when fully charged. Burning batteries should therefore not be extinguished with water, but with sand, for instance. In most cases, the only option in the event of a fire is to extinguish any subsequent fires that occur and allow the accumulator to burn down in a controlled manner. The electrolyte solution usually is flammable. Leaking electrolyte solution from a Li-ion battery can be washed off with water at a distance from the battery. Thermal Loads, Risk of Fire Thermal load can cause the separator of several lithium-ion batteries (→lithium-polymer accumulator) to melt, resulting in an internal short-circuit with sudden release of energy (heating, ignition). New battery developments (LiFePO4) or ceramic, more temperature- resistant separators provide higher safety, but have not yet gained widespread acceptance. Internal protective circuits or battery management systems (BMS) with temperature sensors, voltage monitoring and safety shutdowns shall prevent heating or ignition in case of overcharging or overloading. IMPORTANT: Lithium-ion batteries, like other rechargeable batteries, must not be short- circuited. Short-circuiting (even with metal jewelry or tools) can cause fire or burning due to the high equalizing currents. ©2019 SCUBA FORCE | Doc. No. 01-2021 Rev. 1 26.07.2021 Page 11 of 17
BRIGHT CANISTER AND LIGHT SET INSTRUCTION MANUAL 5.2.2 Safety Instructions for Lithium-Ion Batteries Risks/Dangers Improper use of lithium-ion batteries (disassembling, disrupting, overheating) may cause them to explode or cause fire. Lithium-ion batteries contain flammable and/or corrosive solutions and lithium salts which, in the event of leakage, may cause irritation to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. When lithium-ion batteries are venting, escaping vapors may be a risk to the health. Correct Interaction - Keep away from heat, open flames and corrosive liquids. - Do not damage or burn. - Damaged lithium-ion batteries are to be disposed of immediately in appropriate containers. Personal Safety in Case of Accidents - Wear appropriate protective clothing (gloves, safety goggles, etc.). - When there is a risk of vapors leaking, wear heavy respiratory protection as well as full body protection. Fluid Leakage - Isolate the area, allow lithium-ion battery to cool down and vapors to escape. - Avoid skin and eye contact and the inhalation of vapors. - Absorb any spilled liquids with absorbent and dispose of accordingly. Fire Fighting Measures - Extinguishing media: As there usually is no metallic lithium in a lithium-ion battery, common types of extinguishing media (e.g. ABC powder extinguisher, CO2 extinguisher or water) can be used. However, the use of the extinguishing agent depends on the burning material (e.g. oil, plastic, etc.). - Special fire fighting instructions: If possible, remove batteries from fire fighting area. If heating above 125 °C occurs, the cells may catch fire or explode. - Fire fighting equipment: Wear heavy breathing equipment and full body clothing. - Dangerous degradation products: The cells themselves are not flammable, but the organic materials inside are (alcohol-based solvents (fire class B or C, if applicable) and the coating plastic or polymer film (fire class A)). The appropriate precautions for plastic fires (toxic gases, etc.) must also be observed here as well as the methods used to extinguish such fires. Combustion products include hydrogen fluoride, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. ©2019 SCUBA FORCE | Doc. No. 01-2021 Rev. 1 26.07.2021 Page 12 of 17
BRIGHT CANISTER AND LIGHT SET INSTRUCTION MANUAL 6. Assembly The assembly of the canister is quite simple. Keep in mind, however, that the head and body are made of different materials. The POM from which the body is made is much softer than the aluminum from which the head is made. If the head is put on crooked and then screwed shut with force, it can happen that the thread is destroyed by the body. The head is tightened in a clockwise direction. The first few turns are very easy if the head is positioned correctly. If you feel increased resistance, check that the head is on straight. The canister is equipped with a double O-ring. As soon as the O-ring reaches its sealing surface, the resistance increases noticeably when twisting. This is normal and intentional, as the head is designed with very strong O-rings, which have a higher frictional resistance. The O-rings must be cleaned and maintained regularly. It is essential to prevent dirt and other contaminants from getting onto the O-rings. Regular greasing with silicone grease is also important. If you are unsure, ask your retailer to show you how to do this properly. ©2019 SCUBA FORCE | Doc. No. 01-2021 Rev. 1 26.07.2021 Page 13 of 17
BRIGHT CANISTER AND LIGHT SET INSTRUCTION MANUAL 7. Controlling The BRIGHT battery tank is controlled by a piezzo switch, which reacts to the softest contact. The use is very simple. 1. One short press - lamp / battery tank turn on at 100%. 2. Further short press - lamp / battery tank dim down to 75%. 3. Further short press - lamp / battery tank dim down to 50%. 4. further, long press - lamp / battery tank are switched off The control of the BRIGHT is done through the red piezzo switch (picture above, left). The lamp head contains the electronics, which are completely encapsulated. The electronics compartment may only be opened by an authorized dealer. Unauthorized opening will void the warranty. ©2019 SCUBA FORCE | Doc. No. 01-2021 Rev. 1 26.07.2021 Page 14 of 17
BRIGHT CANISTER AND LIGHT SET INSTRUCTION MANUAL 8. Mounting We recommend attaching the BRIGHT canister to the waist belt. The feedthrough provided for that purpose is large enough for any conventional 50 mm webbing. The battery tank can be secured against slipping with a regular belt buckle. 9. Connecting The battery tank can be connected to the X-Heat system or the BRIGHT lamp head through the E/O cords. E/O Cords are electrical cables that can be plugged in under water. The battery tank must be switched off during the plugging process. Since contamination can always occur during the plugging process, we recommend keeping this to a minimum under water. ©2019 SCUBA FORCE | Doc. No. 01-2021 Rev. 1 26.07.2021 Page 15 of 17
BRIGHT CANISTER AND LIGHT SET INSTRUCTION MANUAL 10. Care and Maintenance After the dive you should thoroughly rinse and clean the battery tank and, if necessary, the lamp head with fresh water. The BRIGHT is designed for low maintenance. Only the two O- rings in the battery tank require regular attention and a certain amount of care (clean / grease). Nevertheless, we recommend having the battery tank and the lamp head checked annually by an authorized specialist dealer. When flying, it is mandatory to disconnect the battery tank from the system so that it cannot switch on unintentionally. 11. Certification and Disposal The BRIGHT and electronic accessories are manufactured in accordance with the following guidelines: EN61000-3-2:2006/A2:2009 EN61000-3-3:2008 EN55014-1:2006/A2:2011 EN55014-2:1997/AC:1997 In addition, the battery has a certification according to UN38.3. ©2019 SCUBA FORCE | Doc.
