The Grand River Located just outside of the Greater Golden Horseshoe, Six Nations of the Grand River Territory is just one of the many Haudenosaunee communities in North America, and the only community to house all six of the Haudenosaunee Nations (Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca, Onondaga, and Tuscarora). It is also the most populated Indigenous community in Canada. did you know? The “Haldimand Proclamation” was granted to the Six Nations for the land losses of homelands, as well as in recognition of the alliance with the British during the American Revolution. This consists of 950,000 acres, six miles deep on each side of the Grand River. Today, the community is located on 4.9% of the Haldimand Tract. Ohsweken or “Oswe:ge,” as it is traditionally pronounced, is at the heart of Six Nations, and roughly translates to “a place you all see.” 14

It features a 12 foot sculpture of Wayne Gretzky, cast in bronze, hoisting the Stanley Cup over his head in victory and a life-size depiction of Wayne as a child with parents Walter and Phyllis Gretzky standing as a family and looking on. The piece plays homage to the Centre’s namesake in the hub of the Tournament Capital of Ontario. 19
