National Lottery Awards For All grant made Y Bont’s 21st Birthday Family Fun Day a success!’ As part of their 21st year celebrations, local charity Y Bont hosted a Family Fun Day at The Amelia Trust Farm, Barry. Thanks to a grant from the National Lottery ‘Awards for All’ the event was a great success, enjoyed by past and present ‘Y Bontees’. Y Bont would like to thank all of the families and children who attended their 21st celebration day. Past and present families were able to get together, swap stories and celebrate their children’s achievements. Thanks to the grant all were able to enjoy the free entertainment including face painting, circus acts, bouncy castles, crafts and live music. The music was provided by Gracie Richards, a supporter of Y Bont, and Garin Lang, a past attendee of Y Bont. Garin, attended Y Bont as a child; now aged 18, he is studying at Heronsbridge School. Garin sang and played his guitar unaccompanied for two hours, entertaining the crowds with his fantastic voice! ‘It was an absolute joy to see the children who have now grown into young adults and who are doing so well for themselves, it was lovely to catch up with Cellan Hall and his family. Cellan (who attended Y Bont as a child) has gone on to represent Wales in table tennis and is studying astrophysics at Cardiff University’ – Paula Daniel (Y Bont staff) The event was especially nice for other staff that have worked at Y Bont for many years and supported the children and their families. Many of the children now attend different schools and colleges, and it was so wonderful to see and hear all their individual achievements, they are truly an inspiration! Y Bont would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the entertainment and activities at our event - Mini Mayhem, Jo Gym Jams, Zumbini, Martha from Circus Eruption, Liz from Slapping Skins, Eli Trust, South Wales Photo Booths, Alana from Mini Miss Makeover and Joanne, our wonderful face painter! A final special thank you goes to the Y Bont staff and volunteers, and the team from White Stuff, Bridgend, who all gave up their Sunday to help make this day a huge success. How to help get local press publicity for small voluntary groups Briefing Session Limited Spaces This is a briefing session opportunity for voluntary groups operating in the Vale to obtain knowledge and tips for writing and formatting press releases straight from the professionals, the Editors themselves. There are probably many more small, local groups - with or without charitable status - in the Vale from which The Gem (and no doubt by extension other local newspapers and publications in the area) receives news releases, notices and the like. Some of the large charities have paid staff tasked with media and press relations; some of the voluntary groups offer training for their local volunteers on how to engage with media. Many small organisations, such as churches, support groups, and similar simply do not have these luxuries. Perhaps people in these groups are not sure what to write, how to write or submit it, or whether there is a cost involved. There are likely to be other reasons, too. Whatever the reason, staff at The Gem are always keen to receive news, and as often as possible, publish it. The Gem is a local newspaper, and these smaller organisations are an intrinsic part of the communities they, and The Gem, serve. If you would like a quick 'how-to' session on how to write a news release, how to send it in, what type of photographs work well, or anything else media related, we can help with a short, sharp session and you won't leave blinded by science or confused by jargon. GVS has limited spaces for up to six people to attend this session which is priced at just £5 per person on Thursday 15 November 2018 from 9.30am – 11am. If you would like to attend this session please register for a place by contacting Mark Stillman, e-mail: mark@gvs.wales, tel: 01446 741706. GVS is also considering running future sessions at a later time slot, 4.15pm – 5.45pm. If this time suits you better please register your interest with Mark. 13

Public Consultation on the Provision of Adult Thoracic Surgery in South Wales Local Health Boards are working together to look at the future provision of adult thoracic surgery services in South Wales. This work is being led by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee (WHSSC) which is responsible for the joint planning of specialised NHS services on behalf of the all Local Health Boards in Wales. An eight week consultation has now commenced and we would like your views on the proposal to locate a single adult thoracic surgery centre at Morriston Hospital in Swansea serving patients from south east Wales, west Wales and south Powys. Thoracic surgery involves operations on all parts of the chest, including the chest wall, the contents of the chest, and the lungs. Our local patients with serious lung conditions (including lung cancer) currently have specialist major surgery (thoracic surgery) at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, as part of their overall treatment pathway. This consultation covers proposed changes to just that complex surgery part of the pathway and not any of the local services, such as seeing a respiratory consultant and having diagnostic tests, which would continue to be delivered locally as they are presently. Please go to the WHSSC website to read the consultation document and tell us what you think by 27 August 2018, using the contact details and feedback mechanisms provided by WHSSC - http://www.whssc.wales.nhs.uk/thoracic-surgery-services-in-south-wales Cardiff and Vale UHB and the Cardiff and Vale Community Health Council will be holding two public meetings during the consultation period where a representative of WHSSC, together with local clinicians, will be giving a presentation on the proposals. This will be followed by an opportunity for you to ask questions and give feedback on the proposed changes. A full list of all public events taking place across south Wales is available on the WHSSC website; the details of the public meetings in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan are as follows: Mon 23 July 6.30pm – 8pm in Castleland Community Centre, Belvedere Crescent, Barry CF63 4JZ Wed 25 July 6.15pm – 7.45pm Public Meeting in Butetown Community Centre, Loudoun Square, Butetown, Cardiff CF10 5UZ Please could we ask for your help with sharing information about the consultation with colleagues and networks, and with encouraging people to share their views. Clive Curtis helps bridge links between Britain and Oman In his spare time, our very own Clive Curtis from GVS, helps to support the work of The Anglo-Omani Society (AOS). The Society is a charitable organisation working with the objective of preserving the longstanding friendship between Britain and Oman. The Society was formed in January 1976 with HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said as the Society’s Patron and HE The Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman in London as its President. The Society aims to: To advance the education of the British public about all aspects of Oman. To advance the education of Omani nationals about all aspects of the UK. To improve understanding between Oman and the UK and to promote a lasting friendship between the two countries. To provide bursaries, scholarships and grants for Omani and British students and projects. Clive was invited to Oman in May by Sheikh Hilal Al-Shabibi and stayed in the family’s home in the rural town of Samad Ash-Shan. On previous visits Clive has stayed in the capital, Muscat, but this was an adventure into the “real” Oman. He was shown a number of projects, some focussing on the restoration of historical sites, environmental projects and community projects – all run by our equivalent of Third Sector organisations. He was also given an insight into the lives of the Bedouin. The Bedouin are a nomadic people and can be found across the Middle East. Clive was invited to have coffee with the Chief of the local Bedouin (which then morphed into a 4 hour meal with the Chief’s family) complete with a venture into the desert. Clive said, “Oman is a beautiful country with the most hospitable people – it’s a hidden gem in the Middle East”. He added “Omani people have a great sense of pride in their history, culture, and their country. The projects I visited are a testament to the passion of Omani “Third Sector” organisations and the people of Oman”.
