ICAEW PREPARING FOR BASE Preparing for BASE All students need to do to prepare for BASE is for a nominated team captain to create an online account. They can do this by visiting the student portal at icaew.com/base and following the link to ‘Take the challenge’. They will need to enter the details of all their team members. If you are using lesson time to deliver the competition, we would recommend doing this beforehand so students have more time to complete the game. It will also allow for early identification of any IT issues. The online game includes a series of videos hosted on a private site. For these videos to play correctly, it is important that the hosting site is allowed through any firewalls your school may have. You can test this by trying to play the video at the following link: https://files. admin.cappats.com/Employers/capp/HistoryofCapp.mp4. If you have any problems, your IT teams may need to white-list the specific videos that are used. To do this, please contact the support team via email and they will be able to provide the full list of URLs. The videos do have sound but this is not essential to complete the activity. If you experience any technical issues, please contact icaew.support@capp.co. For all other questions, please contact base@icaew.com. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES To support you in promoting the competition to your students, we’ve developed two Power Point presentations. One can be used to encourage students to take part. The other can be used to introduce the competition as part of the lesson plan, if you decide to deliver the competition in class time. Both presentations can be downloaded from the teacher portal at icaew.com/base. There is also a useful ‘How to’ video, with step-by-step instructions on taking part for teachers and students. 5
ICAEW INDIVIDUAL FEEDBACK Individual feedback Any students who would like individual feedback on their strengths have the opportunity to play an individual version of the online game. This is not part of the competition, but the feedback could be really useful for UCAS and job applications. • We would recommend that this is completed outside of the classroom to allow more time for the compulsory elements of BASE. This would make a good task for homework. • Students access the link via the same logins and link for the team round via the student portal at icaew.com/base • Similar to the team round, the individual round is an online game for students to take individually. They will watch a video outlining the experiences of four trainee chartered accountants. The video will regularly pause and present them with multiple choice options. They will then need to decide which option they would be most likely to choose in that situation. • Students will then receive individual feedback outlining three key strengths and an area for development. This is incredibly beneficial for personal development and use on UCAS statements and other applications. 6
ICAEW NEXT STEPS Next steps ICAEW.COM/CAREERS Students are able to visit icaew.com/careers to find out more about careers in chartered accountancy. They’ll be able to hear from our members and learn about the different routes into the profession. There is also a range of hints and tips about what they can do to make themselves more employable, and how we can support them. Remind them to check out our advice on improving their CV too. ICAEWTRAININGVACANCIES.COM We’d recommend that any students ready to start their careers should start their search early, with many organisations advertising their opportunities up to a year in advance of their start dates. Students can search our job board at icaewtrainingvacancies.com to find the latest vacancies from the best employers in the industry. SUPPORT FOR YOU We‘re happy to send you additional resources such as brochures if you need them. These are a great resource for your careers service, ensuring advisers and students have access to the latest information. Additionally, we have a host of volunteers available to support careers fairs and deliver presentations in school. If this is something you’d be interested in, please contact studentrecruitment@icaew.com for more information. 7
ICAEW APPENDIX 1 – THE LESSON PLAN AND TIME REQUIRED Appendix 1 – The lesson plan and time required The provided lesson plan is designed to be delivered over two hours, or two lessons but can be adapted as you see fit. It is worth noting that students can do the presentation exercise we’ve allocated to the second lesson in their own time if there is a concern about dedicating two lessons to BASE. However, due to the way BASE has been designed, the learning outcomes of the competition complement the curriculum and PSHE studies. TEACHER CLASS DATE PERIOD Relevant student information • You will need to put students into teams of four and assign a team captain. and preparation • Team captains must create accounts and log in credentials to the online portal before taking part in the lesson(s), and share those credentials with their team mates. ICAEW APPENDIX 2 – LEARNING OBJECTIVES Appendix 2 – Learning objectives ICAEW has extensively mapped the key learning outcomes from a student. We have designed BASE to develop transferable soft and academic skillsets as both are vital to a successful career. ACADEMIC SKILLS Relationship building The business environment and managing change Planning, managing and controlling an effective team to achieve the task set, supporting and learning from other members of the team, motivating and Students need to look at an ‘organisation’s’ internal and external building effective relationships. environment and assess impact on the business, how the business could adapt and how to manage the change. How students Financial management, strategies and accounts approach tasks and maintain responsiveness. Students are required to evaluate financial strengths and weaknesses based on a set of company accounts, supporting their comments with Curiosity evidence and recommend strategies based on their analysis. The drive of a student to thoughtfully learn and retain information to be applied effectively throughout tasks. SOFT SKILLS Presentation skills Integrity Students will be required to clearly communicate their thought processes and justify their decisions as if presenting to a board of senior managers. Individuals and teams will need to take ownership and do the right thing; acting accountably for actions undertaken and decisions made. Exposure to true to life recruitment processes Organisation Some of the questions/exercises are based on those used by leading employers during their recruitment and selection processes. Individuals and teams will need to manage and prioritise work effectively to complete all the tasks within the allotted time. Understanding what accountants do Communication skills BASE is designed to allow students to work through true to life business challenges and scenarios chartered accountants find themselves in every day. Students will need to communicate concisely and effectively with each other to successfully convey and bring together their individual ideas to Developing digital skills complete the challenge as a team. The team task involves online working, allowing students to integrate digital and non-digital skills. 11
ICAEW APPENDIX 3 – BASE SAMPLE QUESTION TEXT Appendix 3 – BASE sample question text The students will be required to watch a video following the working lives of four trainee chartered accountants. They will be presented with a range of situations that the trainees encounter, along with four multiple choice options which they will need to rank in order from their most, to least likely response. Example: INTRODUCING ALEX PAYNE, TRAINEE ACCOUNTANT AT JMC. 1) Alex has spent the last four months in an advisory team. The team have been working closely with a charity that helps to educate young people in developing countries. During his lunch, Alex is reading a report that was sent to the client by his colleague, Stephanie. Though he has never met her, Alex is aware that she is a very senior member of JMC. Towards the end of the report, he notices that a number of graphs and tables don’t add up. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN THIS SITUATION? a) You mention it to a colleague to find out what they think. You don’t want to embarrass Stephanie, so you seek a second opinion. b) You immediately contact Stephanie to highlight the error. You believe it is important to challenge things when they are wrong. c) You decide not to highlight the error. You don’t want to create a negative first impression with someone so senior. d) You examine the implications of the error, then contact Stephanie. Although she is very senior, you are prepared to raise important issues when it will make a difference. 12
