You’ve received the links to our ALA Youth Media Awards selection lists by now, and we wanted to share the updated #OwnVoices list, which contains children’s and teen titles publishing through August 2021 and highlighting authors writing from their personal experiences in a marginalized or under-represented group. BOOK RESOURCES AND EXTRAS Coming in March, Megan Wagner Lloyd’s Allergic (ISBN 9781338568905 PAP, 9781713735052 FBD) introduces Maggie, who feels unimportant in a family with an active new baby and younger twin brothers. McCall Hoyle, award-winning author, ALA Schneider Family Book Award finalist, and school librarian, brings us Stella (ISBN 9781629729015) next month. It’s a touching tale about a beagle who suffers from anxiety after a mistake ends her bomb-sniffing career who gets a second chance at finding true love. On February 19th, the Flora & Ulysses (movie tie-in ISBN 9781536217360 PAP) original Disney+ movie premieres, based on the Newbery Award-winning novel by Kate DiCamillo. The We Need Diverse Books Walter Dean Myers Awards winners for 2021 are Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam, illus. by Omar T. Pasha (Teen) and When Stars Are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed, illustrated by Iman Geddy (Younger Reader). See the honors for each category, and get links to the virtual awards ceremony, here. The Jane Addams Peace Association has also announced the winners of the 2021 Jane Addams Children’s Book Awards. They are: We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom and illustrated by Michaela Goade (Books for Younger Children) and A Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat (Books for Older Children). See the honors and find information on that virtual ceremony, here. We have some seriously wonderful graphic novel news this month! First up, HarperCollins is launching I Can Read! Comics, with the first titles arriving in June. These are written for ages 4-8, will be available in three levels, and are publishing in jacketed hardcover and paperback under the HarperAlley imprint. Similarly, Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing will roll out Little Simon Graphic Novels for ages 5-9 this month, and Ready-to-Read Graphics this summer. All will be
published in jacketed hardcover, paperback, and e-book editions. Read more here. And finally, Random House Books for Young Readers is publishing graphic novel editions of The Magic Tree House! The first volume, Dinosaurs Before Dark, arrives in May; read more here. All of these new titles are available via our Automatically Yours standing order program. Reach out to Rita or Bobbie (contact info at top) to get signed up! Two additional children’s imprints also arrive this spring, from Enchanted Lion and Phoenix International. Enchanted Lion’s Unruly imprint will debut in April, publishing primarily picture books for an older than “usual” age group, which their editor, Claudia Bedrick, plans to use to broaden and deepen the publisher’s commitment to diversity in illustrated books. Phoenix is targeting the 3- 6+ year old range with Sequoia Kids Media, a new imprint with a school and library focus, including books for reluctant readers, English translations from Chinese, and titles meant for children and parents to enjoy together. Each title will have an ebook and read-along version. Running Press Kids has created a wellness page just for kids, providing resources to give children a safe space to reflect on their emotions and strengthen coping skills. The landing page includes free downloadable pages from relevant RPK books, such as meditations from Mallika Chopra and supplemental materials they have created. Check it out!
