Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) What is SMIF? • Fund of ~$250,000 invested into Australian stocks actively managed by students enrolled at UQ • Student managers are advised by a committee of academics from the Business School How do I get involved? • Come along to an information session in first couple of weeks of semester 1 - date and time TBC! • Competition will be running from March – April to determine new portfolio managers. Any of you can form a team and enter! What will I get out of being involved in SMIF? • Development of skills that are essential for job market – teamworking, report writing, financial analysis, presentation etc. • Networking opportunities – past SMIF events have featured professional fund managers and being involved in SMIF allows you to connect with these people BAFE Orientation, Semester 1 2021 #UQBusiness CRICOS code 00025B
A few tips – making the most of the program • Come to class – ask lots of questions • Work steadily, right from the outset and • Learn how to work well in a team • Join the relevant student societies • Enter case competitions • Attend the Real Options sessions • Engage with BEL Career Services and the BEL Student Experience Team • Make sure you find relevant part-time work/internship - You need to apply the knowledge you learn here at UQ - You need to develop on the job skills to be industry ready • Do something outside of BAFE (sports, volunteer, start a business…) • Make use of the BAFE / UQ alumni network BAFE Orientation, Semester 1 2021 #UQBusiness CRICOS code 00025B 11
