Dear guests, Welcome to the open day at Schloss Bellevue! We are de- lighted to have you as our guests in Schloss Bellevue and the park today.
We warmly invite you to get to know the official residence of the Federal President and to meet people who are en- gaged in various forms of voluntary work in our country. The “Bürgerfest” honours this work and all the people who contribute their ideas and invest their energy to promote solidarity within our society and make it an attractive place to live – whether in associations and church com- munities, in the field of environmental protection or in culture and education. What people achieve during the countless hours of volun- tary work they perform is what makes our country strong. They provide practical assistance, they encourage and inspire others. They assume responsibility. And amid the diversity of their engagement, they are united by the desire to shape our society – they are united by their enthusiasm for the future! This year’s “Bürgerfest” partner regions, Finland and Land North Rhine-Westphalia, also fuel our enthusiasm for the future. We would like to thank them particularly for their contribution to this event, along with the many other partners. Making our voices heard, rolling up our sleeves and always remaining open to new ideas is what we want to convey by choosing “Embracing the future” as the motto for this “Bürgerfest”. Enjoy the day and allow yourselves to be inspired! After all, the future is what we make of it, together. Frank-Walter Steinmeier Elke Büdenbender
CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS STAGE IN THE PARK Presenters: Bettina Tietjen and Marco Seiffert “ORT DER BEGEGNUNG” (GARDEN STAGE) Presenters: Andrea Vannahme and Ingo Hoppe COLOURFUL BELLEVUE Presenter: Ralph Caspers SCHLOSS BELLEVUE PARTNER PROGRAMME MAP 2019 PUBLICATION DETAILS
CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS ROLAND KAISER Since the start of his career, German artist Roland Kaiser has won the hearts of three generations with his music and through his social activity. Life has made Roland Kaiser a prominent personality – he is frequently honoured for his social engagement, not least with the Order of Merit of the Federal Repu- blic of Germany in 2016. His broad repertoire reads like a journey through the his- tory of German schlager music of the 1970s, 80s and 90s. APOCALYPTICA On 10 May 1996, the Finnish metal band Apocalyptica released their debut album “Plays Metallica By Four Cellos”, creating their own genre and laying the foundations for a career that has span- ned more than 20 years. Along the way they have explored several musical styles – ranging from atmospheric interludes to rapid, batte- ring rhythms – but their music has remained dynamic and melodious throughout. GAYLE TUFTS For more than 25 years, Gayle Tufts has been building a bridge between her old and her new homelands. Her pieces reflect her personal view of Trump’s America and her love of Germany. As an entertainer, singer and author, Gayle Tufts combines dance and song, music and words in at least two languages, ac- companied by Marian Lux on the piano. INDEX MAP
THE YOUNG CLASSX – SOLO ENSEMBLE AND BEREN KADER FIDAN The Otto Group presents its music education project “The Young ClassX”. The solo ensemble select choir will perform with a band at this year’s “Bürgerfest” alongside Beren Kader Fidan. The Turkish soprano began her musical training in 2012, driven by the desire to become an opera performer. The musicians demonstrate how it feels to do something you love – and to enjoy it in the process. ROBIN PACKALEN It would be no exaggeration to describe Robin Packalen as a prodigy of Finnish pop music. The singer and performer from Turku, southern Finland, released his celebrated debut album at the age of 13. Packalen, who has had a reputation as a teenage star for many years in the Nordic countries, now appears as a mature solo performer, combining influences from urban pop, dance and electro with R&B singing and an electric rock guitar. HORST HANSEN TRIO With its multifaceted interpretations of modern jazz, the Horst Hansen Trio offer their audience a varied performance in terms of both their music and their stage outfits. Their music can be described as honest and not excessively intellectual. This is reflec- ted in groovy rhythms, wild time changes and energetic improvisation sessions. INDEX MAP

EMBRACING THE FUTURE – EMBRACING RESPONSIBILITY 2.15– STAGE IN THE PARK 2.45 pm FEDERAL PRESIDENT FRANK-WALTER STEINMEIER IN CONVERSATION WITH Space, the deep sea and the polar regions are extreme environments hostile to human life. However, the scien- tific insights gleaned there help us to better understand our habitat Earth as well as changes in the climate and the environment. The more we know about these changes, the better we can target our efforts to counteract them in order to ensure a viable future also for generations to come. The Federal President will talk to two scientists who through their research trips have gained a quite unique perspective on our habitat Earth and who are encouraging people to work to build a positive future. On the stage, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in conversation with: Prof. Dr Antje Boetius The Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) at the Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research and Pro- fessor of Geomicrobiology at the Marum Research Faculty, Universität Bremen, heads a research group on deep sea ecology and technology at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology. She has taken part in almost 50 expe- ditions to all the world’s oceans and is currently preparing for an expedition to the North Pole designed to provide insights into the consequences of the rapid climate change in the Arctic. In 2018, she received the German Environ- mental Award of the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt DBU (German Federal Foundation for the Environment) and the Communicator Award of the Stifterverband (Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany) and the Deutsche Forschungs- gemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) for her en- gagement in communicating her research on the deep sea and the polar regions in many ways and over many years. Dr Alexander Gerst The geophysicist has already flown to the International Space Station (ISS) twice for the European Space Agency (ESA) and holds the European record for the most days in orbit, 363 in total. Furthermore, in the context of his last mission “Horizons” (2018), he was the second European and first German commander of the ISS. Gerst conducted numerous experiments in space, including cancer research and experiments on artificial intelligence topics. “Only when we understand the universe in which we live will we be able to protect our home” is how he describes part of the motivation behind his work. His photos from the ISS cupola memorably revealed the vulnerability of our planet. Gerst holds the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, First Class, and has received many prizes for his work as an astronaut and scientist. Presenter: Bettina Tietjen INDEX MAP
