Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer Welcome to the autumn copy of Parramatta Pulse. Free parking in the Parramatta city Council and Transport for NSW give you free parking until 30 April 2021. Escarpment Boardwalk We will open a new path along the Parramatta River in April 2021. The path goes from Parramatta Park to Melrose Park. It is called the Escarpment Boardwalk. You can walk or ride your bike on it. New Aquatic and Leisure Centre We will build a new Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Parramatta. It will have pools, water play and a gym. It will cost $77 million to build. Australia Day Awards We gave Australia Day Awards to people who do good work in our community. We wanted to thank them for their hard work. Park for free in Parramatta city We want to help local shops and the community after a difficult year. City of Parramatta and Transport for NSW will give you free parking until 30 April 2021. You can park for free in • The Parramatta city centre • East Street car parks If you spend $20 or more at some shops you can get free parking. For more information go to cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/free-parking News about the Parramatta Light Rail We want people to eat outside again on Eat Street. That is why Transport for NSW works faster on the light rail. Work will now finish in the middle of 2021. We will have a party in August 2021 when the work is finished. Escarpment Boardwalk We will open Escarpment Boardwalk soon. Escarpment Boardwalk is a path that runs along the Parramatta River. It goes from Melrose Park to Parramatta Park. It is away from the roads which makes it safe for people to walk or ride their bikes. There are stairs from the path to Stewart Street and Macarthur Street. New Aquatic Centre Council is building a new Aquatic and Leisure Centre. It will be in Parramatta Park. It will be a place for people to swim, play and meet. The centre will have things like • A heated outdoor pool with places for people to sit and watch • An indoor pool • A sauna, spa and gym • A pool for learning to swim and a water play area • A café and meeting rooms • Parking for 197 cars Council and the NSW government will pay for the new aquatic centre. Art in Parramatta Square We will have new artwork in Parramatta Square. They are 2 statues that are 8 metres tall. The statues are about eels. They tell the story of Parramatta from its Aboriginal beginning to its famous sports culture. The council asked 3 artists to make the statues. Their names are Clair Healy, Sean Cordeiro and Reko Rennie. Council wants to put the statues up in 2022. Australia Day Awards The Lord Mayor Councillor Bob Dwyer gave out the 2021 Australia Day Awards in January. The Awards thank people for the things they do for our community. This could be things like • Doing volunteer work or community service • Arts and culture • Sports • Education • Being kind Thank you to all the winners. These are the winners of the 2021 Australia Day Awards. Junior Citizen of the Year Antonio Rajaratnam Antonio was a student at Redeemer Baptist School. He likes to do volunteer work and help out at his church. Antonio studied a very special animal called the Sand Fairy Cicada. He got the Young Scientist Award for his studies in 2020. Young Adult Citizen of the Year Elise Kellett Elise is a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the Starlight Foundation. She also works for Y NSW and supports young people. Many of the young people • Are homeless • Have mental health issues • Get in trouble with the police Elise helps these young people to have better lives.
Adult Citizen of the Year Ian Carter Ian Carter supports people with mental health issues. He works on projects that give people better mental health care. Ian also works hard to stop people from ending their life. Ian is a Major in the Australian Army. The Army gave him an award for the brave things he did. Ian also gave out awards from the army to local students for being great leaders. Senior Citizen of the Year Heather Gillam Heather runs the Australian War Widow’s Guild in Epping. She is also a member of the Epping RSL. Heather is 93 years old. Every week she visits people who went to war for Australia to make sure they are well. Heather is also part of other projects that look after people who went to war.
Community Group Award Meals Plus Mark Newton and Angela Daines from Parramatta Mission were there to get the award. Meals Plus has been around for over 45 years. They support people who are homeless or have a difficult time. Meals Plus helps people with • Food • Showers, toothpaste, soap • Getting support from other services There are 3 staff that work for Meals Plus. Everyone else is a volunteer. Community Service Award Paul Moussa Paul runs the Meals Plus program at Parramatta Mission. Paul makes sure people get meals and support when they need it. When Covid-19 started Paul made sure that 150 people could get takeaway meals every day. Paul also looks after the Meals Plus volunteers.
Humanity Award Diane Lear Diane has been a nurse for over 40 years. She works at Westmead hospital. Diane also volunteers as a counsellor. She supports people who have brain cancer. Her work shows how much she cares about people in the community. Leadership Award Westmead Hospital COVID-19 Clinic Team Dr Brandon Verdonk, Dr Angela Hamilton and Tamara Claxton were there to get the award. Since January 2020 the team at Westmead Hospital worked hard so that everyone can get tested for Covid-19. They tested over 100,000 people.
Parramatta Nights 25 March – 18 April 2021 Parramatta CBD There is lots going on in Parramatta this autumn. Parramatta Nights start on 25 March. It finishes on 18 April. There will be many outdoor activities in the city centre. In Parramatta Square there will be • Live jazz music • Live rap music by Briggs • Live rock music by The Chats or Smoko • Songs by Ruby Fields We will also have music on the City Centre Carpark rooftop. There will be lots of activities at Prince Albert Square in the school holidays. Active Parramatta Active Parramatta has activites for kids, adults and older people. The activities are free or do not cost much. For kids The School Holiday Program has activities all over Parramatta Council. You can sign up for the April School Holiday Program from 9.30am on 22 March 2021. For adults We have health and fitness activities online or face to face. We have things like Yoga, Boot camp and Zumba. For older people The Active Parramatta Van’s Better Ageing Program is for people over the age of 55. The program is free. We have things like Dance Fit, Mobility Flow and Aqua Fit. Sydney Olympic Park ARTEXPRESS at the Armory ARTEXPRESS shows art from students who finished high school in 2020. At ARTEXPRESS you can see lots of different art like paintings, drawings or photos. More green for our city The City of Parramatta will plant more than 2,000 trees by 2022. The trees will help keep our neighbourhoods cooler. What is on for people over 55 The City of Parramatta has fun activities for people over the age of 55. You can learn new things, do sports and meet new people. We have activities all year round. Changes in your area Dundas Parramatta Council wants to build lots of new areas to relax and play sports all over North Parramatta. Some of the areas will be Doyle Ground, Dan Mahoney Reserve or Barton Park. Council wants to know from the community what these areas should look like. Changes in your area North Rocks Max Ruddock Reserve We made Max Ruddock Reserve better. There is now • An outdoor gym • A playground • A fence to catch balls • New footpaths Council will soon talk with the community. What happens in Parramatta There is a lot happening in Parramatta this autumn. We have soccer, rugby and AFL matches. You can go and support the Western Sydney Wanderers, Parramatta Eels and GWS Giants. There are two horse races at Rosehill Gardens in March. • The Autumn Racing Carnival on 13 March. • Longines Golden Slipper Day on 20 March. The Sydney Easter Show will be at Sydney Showground from 1 April until 12 April. You can go to Riverside Theatres or have a meal on Church Street or Parramatta Square. Go to Harris Park There are many great things to see and do at Harris Park. Eat You can find many Indian and Arabic restaurants in Harris Park. Try some tasty Indian dishes and some yummy Lebanese sweets. Shop You can buy foods and spices to cook at home. There are many shops to buy clothes and other things. Play James Ruse Reserve Water Playground is a fun place for kids. There is also a skate park. You can do a tour. A guide will tell you about the history of Harris Park and its people.
