TELLING A PEOPLE'S STORY AFRICAN-AMERICAN CHILDREN'S ILLUSTRATED LITERATURE Tuesday, September 1 - Saturday, October 31 For the first time, African-American children’s illustrated literature is the focus of an exhibition featuring art produced for book illustrations. This presentation of the genre offers a lens into the cultural, historical, and social makeup of African- American cultural identity, while also shedding light on the long neglected world of African-American authors and illustrators in the pantheon of children’s literature. Roselle Public Library is proud to host this panel exhibition. Enjoy viewing this informative installation on your next visit to the Library! 630.529.1641 rosellepld.org 3

ANNUAL REPORT | FY 2019-2020 MESSAGE from the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The Roselle Public Library District operates on a fiscal year that begins in July and ends in June of the following calendar year. Included in this annual report are breakdowns of our income and expenditures, our portion of the tax base for a sample Roselle household, and a series of highlights from the prior fiscal year we wanted to focus on in this year’s report. For the first time since the library district was founded, we had to suddenly close the building and cease operating the kind of friendly, face-to-face services we are proud to provide on a daily basis to the Roselle community. Transitioning to completely remote service via email and over the phone was difficult but we did so in order to safeguard the health and wellness of our users and staff, many of whom are residents of Roselle and surrounding communities. Even now that we have reopened our building once more for limited, distanced services, and continue to offer curbside pickup, some staff are still working remotely part or all of the time and we continue to learn how to do our work to the best of our abilities while the COVID-19 pandemic continues on. We present this report of the year behind us, regrettably interrupted, but still noteworthy. A few highlights include our collaborations with the Village of Roselle to promote the 2020 Census and with the Roselle Park District to install a story walk beginning at the Clauss Recreation Center. Stay well, Samantha Johnson, Executive Director 16

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS The Library was a leading participant in the Envision Roselle initiative to develop a long-range community vision for Roselle and all the community members served by our numerous government agencies. This included participating in routine meetings and discussions, focus groups, and assisting with communications and promotions. Library staff participated with the Village’s Complete Count Committee to plan promotions and initiatives to encourage all Roselle residents to respond to the 2020 Census, using state grant funds to pay for these efforts. Together with Itasca and Bloomingdale Libraries we held our annual On the Same Page multi-community reading event throughout the month of October 2019. The book selection was Ruthless River, by Holly FitzGerald. Patrons were able to attend programs at all three libraries. This program was made possible with the support of numerous other organizations, including the Friends of the Roselle Public Library and the Bloomingdale-Roselle Rotary Club. Story Walk Together with the Roselle Park District, the Library debuted a story walk installation along the walking paths at Clauss Recreation Center. The story walk consists of a sequential series of panels conveying a story while walking the path. The chosen story was I Wish You More by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld. Financial support was provided by the Itasca Bank, the Rotary Club of Bloomingdale-Roselle, the Roselle Library Foundation, and Friends of the Roselle Library. 18

NAVIGATING A PANDEMIC Remote Service Staff began to work remotely in mid-March and once the Library began curbside pickup, staff continued to work remotely at least part of the time. Services that continued to be provided while the Library was closed to the public included email and phone reference, virtual programming, and virtual notary service. Fines Free & Extending Lending Periods Effective in March, the Library paused the assessment of overdue fines through the end of June, then the Library Board of Trustees voted in June to formally end the practice of assessing daily overdue fines. Fees for lost, stolen, or damaged items still apply. Also effective in June, the Library Board voted to extend lending periods to help spread out the return of materials. Most items are now circulated for three weeks. Quarantine All borrowed materials returned to the Library were and continue to be quarantined in the Library’s Community Room for a minimum of three, to as long as seven, days before staff touch and process them. HVAC in this space runs 24/7 to ensure proper ventilation. ROSELLE PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT JOINS SWAN LIBRARY SERVICES IN DECEMBER 2020! You may have heard the exciting news: The Library is joining SWAN (System Wide Automated Network)! This means we’ll be part of a larger library consortium in northern Illinois comprising 100 libraries, including academic, public, school, and special libraries through the Chicagoland area! The library catalog will include access to the resources throughout the consortium, allowing patrons to search all collections within SWAN. For a full list of the SWAN library membership, check out swanlibraries.net/member-libraries/. The shared catalog provides access to over 8 million books, movies, music, and more, as well as expanded access to electronic databases and a growing collection of electronic resources. While we work through the challenges of providing services during the pandemic and finding new innovative ways to stay connected, we will provide updates as we progress on our migration journey. Our library was awarded a catalog membership grant from RAILS to support one-time costs associated with data migration and setup. Glenside Public Library District, Roselle Public Library District, and Warrenville Public Library District are officially the newest members of the SWAN Library Services consortium, bringing the membership to 100 libraries. RAILS provides delivery, shared online catalogs, e-book services, talking book services, continuing education programs, communication services, and other leadership services and support to all types of libraries in northern and western Illinois. The system serves private, public, school, and university library members in a 27,000 square mile area. More information about RAILS is available at railslibraries.info. 22
JOINING SWAN LIBRARY SERVICES: WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU Our library community is growing! On December 9, 2020, we will be joining the SWAN library consortium (swanlibraries.net). While we are busy working to make this transition as seamless as possible for you, it is important to share a few mile markers you will see on this road trip. SLIGHT DETOUR November 23 - December 8, 2020 Partial Catalog Freeze During this period, our library cannot add new material to the library catalog. This means you will see a delay in the latest Best Sellers being on the shelf. Other than availability of brand new materials for you to check out, this freeze should have minimal impact on you. CONSTRUCTION AHEAD ● December 4 - 8, 2020 "Checkout - Only" Period During this time, you can check out materials, but that activity will not be reflected immediately in My Account in the online catalog. We will update you on the road map as we approach our destination.
