As this new wetland area filters the water and provides a natural habitat for birds, aquatic life and other species, we added 10,000 shoreline plants, 10,000 upland plants, 42 new trees, a new oyster reef and preserved 30 old-growth trees. A very special thanks to Friends of the Rappahannock, a non-profit, grassroots WATERWAYS WALK & TALK conservation organization that has been instrumental in the success of this multi- 5-6pm on first and third Sundays phase project. L I V E L I K E A LO C A L 12 Fall Foliage Forays Area expert, Susan Williamson, who has welcomed guests at our resort for decades, has compiled a list of her favorite recreation areas to see fall foliage and wildlife. If you depart from the Tides Inn and complete all four, the round-trip driving will be approximately two hours (plus your visit time). Let us arrange a gourmet picnic basket to enjoy along the way – maybe overlooking wetlands of the Rappahannock. Start your fall “leaf peeping” excursion right at the resort on our new nature trail, which takes you through a wooded area to see our horticulturist’s “mushroom garden” and culminates in our beautiful wildflower field. There, see native flowers being pollinated by our resident honeybees. See our Concierge for a walking map. One of the most significant wetlands on the Chesapeake Bay for marsh-bird communities, Dameron Marsh Natural Area Preserve boasts pristine sandy shorelines. Walking along the boardwalk, you may admire the beauty of the saltmarsh. Don’t forget your binoculars, as marsh hawks, brown pelicans, vultures, swans and more may be spotted. As the upland portions were used for agriculture for three centuries, the former fields were restored to forested habitats that support diverse wildlife. A 15-minute drive west of Dameron is Hickory Hollow Natural Area Preserve. A three- mile trail winds through the 254-acre preserve with mixed pine-hardwood forests, ravines, and swampland. You may spot various songbirds, wild turkeys, tulip poplar trees and even persimmon trees. Next, journey another 20 minutes to Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge, a 9,030-acre sanctuary created to protect fish and wildlife species, especially endangered ones. With a forest, grassland and wetland habitats, the refuge is a popular nesting spot for bald eagles, so your chances of seeing one are very high. The last stop on our four-site tour is Belle Isle State Park with 892 acres and seven miles of shoreline. Explore its tidal wetlands and upland forests on hiking, biking and bridle trails. Bicycle, canoe and kayak rentals are available on-site. Fall 2021 (September-November)
