THE BIG PICTURE BRITAIN On with the show medium P unch and Judy puppet shows have been amusing the British since the 17th century. Together with Mr Punch and his wife, Judy, the cast often includes a baby, a crocodile and a po- liceman. Audience involvement is encouraged. Traditionally, Punch is a bad-tempered char- acter who beats his wife and baby with a stick. In recent years, this aspect of the story has been softened, however. The modern Punch does not normally beat the baby, although he may drop it or sit on it. In this photo, taken in Weymouth, on the south coast of England, puppeteer Mark Poul- ton poses with Punch beside his puppet booth. Poulton gives shows on the beach most days during the summer.
